Fingerprint stopped working, setting completely gone

I tried to reboot in Safe mode, it doesn’t solve the issue.

I tried to reach out to support just in case.

I must be honest with you, but every update on the regular FairphoneOS ROM brings a load of new issues, 2 things get patched, 3 other things are broken…

At first it was the screen refresh rate going nuts, from 90hz to 60, randomly, before barely displaying 10 frames per second, needing me to re-set “60Hz” then “90Hz” again… then the update that fixed that introduced Bluetooth instability… Now i believe that this update somehow broke the fingerprint sensor…
I hate to insist on that, but I don’t see any other reason, the sensor is clean, the button is as good as new, and the sensor literally stopped working while nothing happened at all.
The only thing that changed is that i installed FP5.UT2K.B.098.

To me it sounds that your device is faulty and yes it might be this update broke something on your phone. To speed up support see if you can contact them via the online chat

I have the same problem. After installing the update FP5.UT2K.B.098, which was the one before the last one, my fingerprint sensor was completely gone. It says “Fingerprint hardware not available”. Before installing the .098 update, my sensor was working fine.

The latest update FP5.UT2L.B.107 which was supposed to fix this, did not solve anything. The hardware is still unavailable. What did the update do then and how can I fix it?
Help would be much appreciated!

Hi Tom,
Thank you for getting back to me!

I read the Troubleshooting advice but it did not help at all because under Settings > Security & privacy no Fingerprint option is to be found. Also, nothing comes up when I search for it (type Fingerprint into the search function) and in Device unlock no Fingerprint option is offered either, only PIN and Face Unlock.

When my screen is locked the message Fingerprint hardware not available pops up.

And finally, when I check FingerPrint Rawdata and FingerPrint Enroll these info are coming up for both:

FP5 MMI TEST
SW: UT2L
BSN: CWPD06BQ9NG00MK
3DS: SAA6AS0AA10C
ONLINE
PASS

I have no idea what that means.
Thank you for offering your help, it’s much appreciated!

I moved your comments here as you face a different issue as suhgested by @T4om

Having the same issue, suddenly the fingerprint hardware is “not available”. The setting is gone. “FingerPrint Rawdata” test succeeds but “FingerPrint Enroll” lets the app crash.

Factory reset, safe mode, etc. nothing getting the sensor to work again. I opened a support case for now, but got a response that the reply time is 16-18 working days. That is almost a full month and I have to switch to a replacement phone for that time. What a bummer.

On Thursday and Friday you can chat (see the bottom of the page) with Fairphone from 09:00 till 12:00 hours.

I tried reaching out via chat but after 2.5 hours there still was no free agent.

Since today fingerprint scanner stopped working (with Authenticator App) (so effectively I could not log on to company network). Weirdly also in the settings menu all fingerprint related options seemed to have disappeared… (?) Anyone else had these problems?

Hi @Abro,

Sorry to hear you have a problem with your FP5,

you can read more about this issue in this topic above.

You can ask your company if their is a way use the company apps whiteout a fingerprint scanner (pincode for example)

Currently the only permanent solution i can give is to contact your Fairphone reseller for technical seport and repair.
this should be covered onder warranty.

if you bought your phone directly from Fairphone contactsupport using the Fairphone app on your device, expect a waiting time of more than 2 months before you get a response from Fairphone. the live chat is a faster but it can be difficult to get contact with a agent.

Amsterdam time zone.

greetings

Tom

Thank you Tom,

I discovered this is a widespread issue with the FP5 and contacted my reseller Vodafone yesterday for warranty which they will give. Also, fortunately, I got a replacement phone from my office that I am allowed to use privately for the time being and with which I can log on to our office network. I will consider my options now, but I may buy a new phone altogether from another brand (sorry earth…). I might not even bother to get this repaired under warranty with Vodafone as the FP5 is such an unreliable phone. I always took for granted that a phone always does what it should do, till I switched to FP… Sorry to be so negative about all this and thanks for your assistance.

regards,

Same here, Fairphone 5.

I just opened a support ticket.

I tried everything I’ve found here, but nothing helps.
Don’t want to reset my phone, because I don’t expect it to be working.

Does anyone already had contacted the support with a helpful response?
I think this is maybe the result of the latest update.
I hope this can be fixed with an update, because it is very anoying.

Can you confirm your exact issue as you copied your post in 2 differenr topics?

Yeah, didn’t really know whats the current one.
I have the problem that I can’t use the fingerprint sensor anymore.

The option just isn’t available anymore.
Only have face unlock left.
I’ve tried everything to bring it back.

Exact same problem here. Tried everything. Submitted a request to support thought the fairphone app, I see my request with open status, but after 22 days I recieved no answer…

Same issues here. Yesterday it was working fine then suddenly it stopped. I restarted the phone to see if that would fix it and now I get the “fingerprint hardware not available” message on the lock screen and anything to do with fingerprints is gone from the security settings.

The diagnostic tools pass though which is odd. Also the issue persists in safe mode. I haven’t tried a factory reset yet.

I’m running build FP5.UT2P.B.122.20250422 which I installed as soon as it became available.

Is it this issue: FP5 fingerprint sensor unresponsive after update .098 (not 0.88) ?

No, I install updates as soon as they become available. I hadn’t changed anything on my phone for ages before it stopped working. It was completely out of the blue.

In my case it isn’t. I also tried the “Find my phone” workaround (also looking into the more security and privacy / admin apps), but nothing changed. The support is completely silent after nearly a month that I opened the ticket. What’s the point in having 5 years of warranty, when you get no answers from the support? :frowning:
