Mobile data connection breaks after few minutes using dual SIM

I am experiencing the same problem! Also Fairphone 4, Android version 13 (have had the latest update on June 5th).

Reboot: sometimes works for a while, sometimes just for a few minutes, sometimes not at all. The problem always returns.
Flight mode on/off: doesn’t help
SIM deactivate/activate: if I completely turn off my eSim, my physical Sim seems to work. If I only turn off the data usage on the eSim it still occurs
APN reset: doesn’t work
Putting eSim on 3G/4G only: doesn’t work
Problem: I have had my phone for a little more than three years with only a physical sim and never had any connectivity issues. I installed an eSim (as dual sim) in April. Worked just fine the first few months, but since this past week I am suddenly experiencing this issue. It seems to be getting worse, today I had to reboot every few minutes to make it work.
Providers: Simpel (Odido NL network) for the physical sim, Simyo (KPN NL network) for the eSim.

When connected to Wifi, I don’t have any problems; internet works fine and I have also enabled Wifi calling, which works as well.

Thank you all for the work you put in so far. I am very grateful for this thread for the tip of disabling the eSim, as now I can at least have internet if needed when I’m somewhere without Wifi. However, it’s not a permanent solution as I need to be reachable on both numbers. I have also opened a Support ticket, so I hope we can find out what the problem is one way or another.

I have had a Fairphone 4 for between three and four years.

My operator is Orange (Belgium).

We have followed the troubleshooting guide, but the problem persists.

Data is not working. (It was working until about two months ago.)

With my second SIM card (eSIM) from Vodafone (Spain), it works sometimes, but not always.

When I try the Orange card in another phone that is not a Fairphone, the data works.

I have no problems connecting to Wi-Fi.

Fairphone’s technical support says they are overwhelmed and they don’t answer

Thank you.

Could Orange change tecnology (I mean, switch from 3G to 4G for example) in the last month?

You are using two SIMs, so would your problem be the same as this one?

If so we’d better merge this discussion with the other topic.

Thanks a lot @OldRoutard , efectively is the same…

Thanks a lot, I had the same problem and if i switch off my esim i have data without problems.
But does Fairphone find the issue and solve it? Because it is not the perfect solution.

For this to happen you should open a ticket with Fairphone Support.

Hello everybody, I also have this issue with my Fairphone 4, bought in October 2024. I’m replying here to say that my experience is identical to Myrtus’s, and I’m also very grateful for all your suggestions.

What happens if you only grant 1 SIM data connection?

This is already the case, the real sim has access, the e-sim not.

@Lidwien Having the data connection on my eSIM turned on or off doesn’t make a difference for me, it doesn’t work either way (when not connected to wifi).

However, I’ve noticed that as soon as I turn off the data connection for my main (physical) SIM, it also loses its network connection, both with or without wifi connection. I also experience this problem when I have the eSIM completely turned off.
Is this the case for others here, or is this separate from the dual SIM issue?

I tested my physical SIM in another phone and tested another physical SIM (KPN NL) in my phone. The problem occurred in my phone with the other SIM, my own card worked fine in the other phone. So it’s definitely related to the Fairphone…

So far no reply to my support ticket of July 26th, except for the automatic reply that they are very busy.

There is a small change that your physical sim is to old. People have reported problems with a (to old) sim that works in another phone.

Update: I got in touch with Support, they told me it’s a known problem and they are trying to fix it. So, fingers crossed they find the issue soon.

As for the problem with my physical SIM, this seems to be something separate. Thank you for the info Lidwien, I think my SIM is about ten years old, so maybe a new one will do the trick. The other troubleshooting hasn’t worked so far, so I will try this out.

Hi all,

I’m new to this forum, and reason for joining is I’m facing the same issue: with both physical SIM (KPN) and e-SIM (Odido) on, the connection is lost (when outside of WiFi networks reach).

It’s been occuring for two months already. I’ve had both SIM and e-SIM replaced by my two providers, and tried all possible settings mentioned here (turn off 5G, manual APN settings, etc.).

I also believe - I’m not super technical - the issue is in the Fairphone 4 hardware/software somewhere.

Does anyone know it this issue also occurs with the Fairphone 5 or 6 set-up with dual SIM? Perhaps Android 15 doesn’t have this issue.

I’ve posted two support tickets (in May and last week) but no solution yet.

Yesterday I missed a call from the hospital where my wife had surgery. I’m really looking for a quick solution, but I’d hate to leave Fairphone and go to a less sustainable brand!

What I can tell you is:

that dual-sim problem, (which, afaik, in Germany only appears when telekom or its resellers´ SIM are used) was affecting my fp4, and does NOT affect my fp5.

For Italian users, it affects for sure CoopVoce (physical) and Iliad (eSim) operators.
I’m about to change one provider, than the other, and hope for the best, since there are no news from support afaik.

But I really don’t know if it’s operator related

Cannot update my last post editing it, but:

Changed my eSim operator to another one, which uses the same mobile network as the physical one. No luck.

For those who are bothered not to be notified when the disconnection occures (several times per hour in my case, I found out), here is a workaround: disabling the automatic network selection and setting it manually, results in a notification anytime the connection gets lost. This notification disappears when it reconnects to the network.

I hope this will get fix soon: my phone is completely unreliable! :expressionless_face:

Trying to wrap it up, it looks like several threads are reporting issues which seem to be related (or the same). If I’m not wrong, it appears to affect several FP models, from different countries, with different operators: even if they have dual Sim enabled (Thread1, Thread 4 and this very thread), or have only eSim in use (Thread2), or they have both this issue in physical and virtual sims not using them alongside.

Thread1
Thread2
Thread3
Thread4 (from e/os/ community forum)

I just tried, as succesfully happened to solve the problem for one user in Thread1, to delete eSim, reboot, install a new eSim, reboot again… it’s been working for an hour or so, which is a very good improvement for my phone. It didn’t work.

I hope this could help someone

Some updates.

Tried everything and there were no solutions until recently.

Reached out to support and FP is looking more in depth into it and seems to be working on this within A15 as “they hope this will fix it”. nothing concrete though on A15.

Provider updated something on the 5G Network the other day because without any FP Updates suddenly the 5G network became almost unusable at all on my FP4, even without moving.

So I tried one thing again and I’ve found a fix at least on the A1 Telekom Network: turning off 5g .

Moreover, my battery lasts at least 20% longer and the whole phone seems to be less “stressed” as I notice.

Been around a lot and never again lost the connection so far. Speed wise the connection doesn’t appear to be any slower for daily usage.

So for me this is a nice fix.

Reported everything to support too and they use this information for the A15 development

Maybe it helps others too as a fix.
