Mobile data connection breaks after few minutes using dual SIM

Another report: I recently was in Italy for holidays and bought an eSIM (from surfroam) as addition to my standard swiss SIM (M-Budget aka Swissom Network) that didn’t have enough data included (at least not for roaming).

I suffered heavily from both SIMs (the SIM and the eSIM) having exclamation marks in both indicators in the top status line. As I was travelling a bit off the large cities, I blamed this to the bad connectivity available in rural italy. However, most of my travel mates had acceptable connectivity, at least it was much better than mine.

Being back in Switzerland the problem persisted. As I never had such issues before having a 2nd SIM, I started to investigate and this brought me to this thread (which is still unsolved as far as I can see).

The only solution that worked for me was to disable one of the two SIMs and restart the phone and wait a few minutes until the still active SIM established a connection.

As this makes me unreachable for standard telephone calls and SMS messages, this is just a emergency workaround. And makes the FP4 basically unusable with two SIMs (at the same time).

Please note that is not a general problem: I for instance am using two SIMs (French and German) for a couple years (tired of lugging two phones around), and didn’t notice any connectivity or other issues.

Now this is not just another “too bad for you, I’m fine” post, my point is that the issue is unfortunately very complicated, because we don’t have a consistent and universal situation but a slew of slightly different issues all affecting dual SIM use. Is everything due to one and the same FP4 problem? Are there several distinct problems somehow affecting dual SIM use? Whatever it is, we most likely won’t ever know. :man_shrugging:

Hi, my wife and I have been seeing the same of at least a a similar issue for some months now: We both have FP4s (1 x 128 GB, 1 x 256 GB; on Android 13) and the same provider (1&1, Germany, physical SIM, no second SIM). Occasionally, we lose both mobile data the ability to start or receive phone calls). After a few seconds to minutes, it works again.

It is not happening at the same time on the two devices. I have observed it with both phone laying side by side: One shows a normal connection, the others show the infamous exclamation mark. At some point, both work and shortly after the first loses connection.

Before this issue appeared first a few months ago, both phones have been working fine since 2022, respectively early 2023. Until today, I blamed it on our provider, but after reading this thread and a few other posts, I think it is probably a fairphone issue.

Good morning
My SIMs seem to be working now (using them at the same time). It noticed it last week and it’s been working well since. Has anyone else noticed this as well?

Still no luck with my phone… I’m trying to change (another) provider, even with the lowest expectations.
This is my last chance before having to change my phone

Did you try simply turning 5G off?

For me this was the solution.

So I extensively did test this solution while moving and it turns out, turning 5G off is for me the solution and I never lost connection again anywhere :white_check_mark:

Interesting that this changed

In my case, trying 5G 4G 3G etc didn’t work.
Since it suddenly starting working a couple of weeks ago, It’s still working well without issues.

I am facing the same issue for some time now on my FP4.

Turning off 5G did nothing for me. However, I never had this issue before my second provider changed their eSIM to 5G support.

After the update to Android 15 the issue seems to have resolved or at least considerably reduced. The overnight battery drain has more than halved and I did notice the exclamation mark only once since then but it was gone shortly afterwards without any intervention.

I experienced the same! Since the update I didn’t have the issue anymore and can finally have both the SIM’s active and still have connection on both of them. Very happy this has been resolved at last. Immediately ordered a new battery, as I was postponing that until the issue would be resolved (I was in the process of selecting an other, new phone, due to this problem not being addressed properly; but no need for a new phone now anymore, a new battery will be sufficient).
Hopefully this solved the issue for all of us in this thread.

I noticed the same.

But: The issue has changed: Now after every reboot the exclamation mark is in the strength icon, but the “Internet” screen stated “connected”, so just the same behavior as above. I have to deactivate and reactivate the eSIM, to get online again. The only difference is, that it’s by far more rare that before. And the second annoying thing stays after reactivating: The preferred data Sim is the eSIM again, but the preference for calls and SMS stays at the other SIM and has to be changed manually, although the message aftere reactivating says, that all is again on eSIM.

I have (infrequently) a similar problem on A13, so it might not be directly related to the A15 upgrade.

I have 2 SIMs, the main (work) one, and a personal one. My FP4 is configured to ask when calling or sending SMSes which of those two SIMs to use. Yet, every now and then (no pattern detected) it resets those settings, and chooses at random which one to use. Very annoying, especially since I only notice it when it’s too late. If I’m paying two SIMs it is to keep things clearly separated between work and family/friends (for accounting purposes).

And now (still on A13) the menu option to chose from which SIM to send SMS is gone! I can only set once and for all from which of the two accounts I will send SMS, the “Ask every time” option is gone. :man_facepalming:

All this to say, in this specific case A15 is maybe only exacerbating the problems and inconsistencies which already existed in A13.

Hello,

Is there anyone else still having this issue in 2026?

I have the orange version of fp4 so I am still stuck with Android13.

Would rooting the phone to e/OS solve the issue?

Hi chet-buddy!
/e/OS does not solve the problem, at all: nor the community version, nor the official version…
I’m waiting for the next official build to be available: now it’s planned for “Early 2026”, but it’s being delayed since September, as far as I can remember.

Thanks for the reply!

Have you tried /e/OS yourself? From what I see it’s on A14 so I was hoping this could fix the issue.

Yes, I’m using /e/OS since 2022 and experiencing this issue since August 2025.
Now I flashed the community build (A15) hoping it would have this issue solved, which were present on the A14 official build.

Well here goes my hope of solving the issue. :smiling_face_with_tear:

Thank you for your answers, I appreciate!
