I can't call anybody or get called; maybe because of VoLTE?

Hi Fairphone community!

I have a big problem with my Fairphone 4 in combination with my provider “Spusu” (austria).

For over two weeks I have a problem concerning the signal when I try to call somebody or when somebody tries to call me. I have a working signal, I can use the Internet via my network provider “Spusu” even when I turn off my WLAN. I can send and get SMS, I can call somebody via the App “Signal”, but I can’t call somebody or get a phone call the regular way. When I try to call somebody my signal/mobile reception disappears completely, but only for the time while I try calling somebody. After that it appears again and I can use the internet etc. The same thing happens when somebody tries to call me. My signal/mobile reception is gone for a few seconds and the other person goes directly to my mobile mail box.

I contacted Spusu, they say that they do not support the VoLTE system with Fairphones and that’s where the problem lies. I enabled VoLTE on my Fairphone 4, but that did’nt help.
Spusu said that they probably shut down the 3G-connection and every standard below in my area und VoLTE does’nt work with Fairphones in combination with Spusu. The irritating thing is that my wife has a Fairphone 5 and also uses Spusu but she ist able to make phone calls via the 2G network but I’m not despite the fact that we are both in the same location and should be able to use the same transmission tower. I was able to get calls and call somebody myself two weeks ago, so what changed? I haven’t downloaded an update, I haven’t changed anything in the settings in this time. Now I just downloaded the new update, didn’t help.
My provider Spusu says that the problem lies within the phone not within the mobile network.

I put my SIM-card into the phone of my wife, she has a Fairphone 5. With her phone, I have no problem calling somebody. However I can’t call somebody with my Fairphone 4 and her SIM-card.
I put the SIM-card of my father in low into my Fairphone 4, he uses another provider called „Bob“. I can call somebody with his SIM-card with my Fairphone 4.
There has to be a problem with my Fairphone 4 in combination with the provider Spusu somehow. Spusu say they can’t help me with my problem. I haven’t heard from fairphone support in more than two weeks now.

How can this be fixed? I need to be able to call someone with my phone!

I have the same problem. I also tried to turn down VoLTe but it didn’t make a difference.

I also have another problem with spusu: I haven’t been able to make a phonecall or receive a call outside of Austria.

Is there still a 2G or 3G network in Austria? If not you cant make calls without VoLTE.

Which country and network? I’m not sure how tjis works, if you are somehow still tied to Spusu “rules” ot not…

There should be a 2G or 3G network in some places, they shut it down in a lot of places, as far as someone from Spusu told me. But I haven’t seen a map or anything. I’m not certain, how valid this information is.
I was able to make calls in Germany two weeks ago, seems like there are some 2G or 3G places left.

Yes in Germany we still have the 2G network

I’m still very confused that a FP5 with Spusu works, but a FP4 with Spusu doesn’t even though they are in the exact same location. Do you have an explanation for that?

Outside of Austria: Hungary, Croatia and Germany.

I switched to 2G and tried to call my phone. It still hasn’t rung but I received an SMS that I had a call.

Different firmware, hardware etc…

I would def contact FP support as is worked before, maybe they can and are willing to do something…also I would def bother a bit more Spusu.

I contacted Fairphone support on th 20th of March, I wrote them last week via mail and still haven’t heard back from them. Is this normal? It’s quite a long time…

In general, the support seems to be suffering from delayed responses at the moment, so you could try reaching them via online chat (Thursdays & Fridays, limited hours)

Def dont write multiple mails, this will rather slow down than speed up, so as @Meaghan said already, chat is the best option for anything urgent.

i have exactly the same Problem.
FP4 with Provider “Spusu” and no phonecalls since about 3 weeks.
Spusu told me that it’s because 3G is been shut down recently in Austria.
…another detail: when i do a manual search, i find no 2G “Spusu” network, but when my daugther does a manual search, her phone (Samsung) finds a 2G “Spusu” network - and she is able to do phonecalls within Spusu.
Somehow my Fairphone4 doesn’t recognize the “2G Drei” network as a “2G Spusu” network?

Spusu wrote today that there are looking into that. They also told me that they are communicating with fairphone to enable VoLTE with Fairphone.

original mail:

I checked the problems with FP4 or Spusu.
No, it’s not the FP4, it’s a problem with Spusu because I have the same problems with a Vivo V21.

I wrote Spusu, but they have not replied yet.

I have the same problem in Italy. My carrier is PosteMobile mvno under Vodafone network.
Sometime, switching off volte and enabling it again, calling starts again working. This problem seems started some days ago…
I don’t understand if it’s a hardware or carrier problem.
May be the last security update?
Any suggestions?

My fp4 build is FP4.TP2R.C.0132.20250306

I haven’t heard back from Spusu. Now I have switched to the provider Bob and the problem is gone. One interesting thing: My Spusu contract is still active until the end of the month, so I’m using two sim cards. When both are active, I can call and be called with Spusu, when I deactivate the Bob sim card it stops working.
