FP5 not booting after update to Android 15

Hi all,

today I noticed that Android 15 was rolled out to the FP5. I downloaded and updated the Phone.
After the update it started, first with a Green “fairphone” text. After that the whole background became green and there was a light green text “fairphone”. I assume that is the boot animation, but after the text collapsed into only a green l in the middle of the screen nothing is working.
I cannot do anything with it.

The only thing the phone can do is:

  • Enter fastboot (after foceshutdown)
  • Enter recovery mode
  • Vibrate in short intervals after you pressed some combination of Power and volume buttons when it got stuck on the green screen mentioned above.
  • Go back to factory reset and work without any update since then and stay on android 13.

The first attemt was updating the Phone from Android 14 to 15. Also from 13 to 15 didn’t work.
If someone is facing similar issues or knows a solution please let me know.

I’ve had the exact same issue. In my case I only applied the update as my finger print sensor had stopped working. Fairphone were ignoring my support ticket and that was the troubleshooting advice.

Factory reset does not reset to the system it came with, it just removes.your installed apps, settings data. Overall in my eyes the only ypu can do when trying to reboot into system (try at least 7 times) from recovery or bootloader doesnt help

I had the same experience as you: my fingerprint reader stopped working on July 2nd. I haven’t received any response to my support request. I performed a full reset of my phone last weekend, hoping to recover the fingerprint reader, but no luck.

I tried to install the VT28.C.042 update when I saw it was available, but the phone got stuck on the lemon-colored “|”, part of the Fairphone boot animation, and Android 15 never started.

Somehow—I’m not quite sure what I did—the update was rolled back, and everything is working again on the previous version (FP5.UT2Q.B.125.20250605), except for the fingerprint reader, of course.

I’m wondering if the issue could be related to the “private space” feature, which I activated on my current version through a workaround (using the Shelter app: Shelter | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository).

I tried to delete the work profile before attempting the update again, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it.

Could this be a lead?

Thats how it should be and why there is a A/B system, this is what should happen automatically when something goes wrong or after several boot attempts as I wrote above.

Interesting!
It seems it has something to do with fingerprint sensor. Mine was also not working anymore.
And same story for me: FP support didn’t respond to requests and just silently closes my tickets.

Very similar experience but I’ve not used a private space feature at don’t think that’s it. We shouldn’t have to look for clues though, Fairphone should just honour the warranty.

Discussing support speed is rather off-topic here, please stay on topic.

Hello, this evening I performed the latest update. When the phone restarted, it went to a blue/green screen with an I in the middle. The screen stays on like that and I can’t turn it off. The phone is stuck like this — I can’t turn it off or unlock it — and it’s getting very hot, even though I’m in a cool place with no direct sunlight. It’s been about an hour since I started the reboot. Do you have a solution?

I moved your post here see above

The update pretty much bricked my phone. This is what I see:

I am able to boot into recovery mode and also into safe mode, so hopefully I will be able to get everything (that’s not included in my regular backups).

Hello everyone,
I have same problem : an issue with the finger print sensor (~1 month ago), then this morning I’ve updated to android 15 and now the phone is blocked on boot screen with green “I”.
I am currently trying to reboot. Let me know if you have idea. The phone was not modified, rooted or anything, it’s a vanilla fairphone 5.
Thanks

indeed after the 6th or 7th reboot (with the power button or battery removal) the update was roll backed and the phone started on android 14 ! thank

Ok, but rolling back to Android 14 is not the solution or?
I now wiped the phone, so everything is gone, but updating leads to the same issue

I would suggest to report to support and wait until FP could look into it. However it might still be the fingerprint sensor nor working need to be fixed in the repair center.

Indeed, I’m also one of those with a non-working fingerprint reader. Once the phone was stuck, I turned it off by removing the battery, then turned it back on while holding the volume down button. In the startup menu, I selected recovery mode and was able to recover my phone with all its data on Android 14.

If they would only look at the tickets and not closing without anything.
