I’ve had my FP6 for a few days and enjoying it, except for the accidental screengrabbing happening frequently.
Just add an option to change the screengrab button combination, or make it so the volume button needs to be tapped twice before doing a screengrab. Literally anything other than what it is now.
Printing in general shouldn’t be a problem, at least if you have access to a printer with high resolution for the tiny part to be accurate. You just need to have the 3d dataset of the button, either leaked from somewhere or a good reverse engineering of an existing one.
The only issue that you’ll have to take care, is how the mechanical load on the button is applied in real life and if this is a limitation for the production process.
I opened a topic about this too and it got deleted in favor of this one. Fair enough…
But do FP developers even read these forums? Can anyone acknowledge this issue (even if it’s technically due to core Android) and say if they’re working on a fix?…..
I am going absolutely mad with the screenshot combination. It uses Volume Down + Power, but when I try to turn off my phone (because gestures like double tap aren’t implemented and due to the volume rocker’s position), I accidentally take a screenshot 9 out of 10 times when holding the phone one-handed and trying to close it with the power button. How can I disable or reassign this shortcut?
I moved your post here as you shall see you are not the only one.
I haven’t followed the discussion in depth but it seems it is not that easy at the moment to disable and/or reassign the shortcut, but other solutions have been explored. Please read above to see whether you find something to your liking.
Hello everyone.
As a new FP6 tester for the past three days, I am providing my initial feedback. I had been using the FP3+ for seven years. The transfer from the FP3 to the FP6 went very smoothly. So far, I have not encountered any issues. The only thing I find problematic about using the FP6, being used to the FP3, is the position of the buttons. The three main buttons were on the left on the FP3, and now there are two on the left and one on the right, with the switch. Very often, without meaning to, I take screenshots by pressing the left and right buttons when I hold the camera with one hand. The new ergonomics are not yet very practical for me.
For me, it’s only been a month, and I already have a folder full of screenshots due to the poor ergonomic choice of using the volume down and power buttons as the screenshot shortcut. I can’t imagine how it’s been for users who’ve had the Fairphone 6 since release. When will this be addressed? There have been many updates, and I understand that these things take time, but I haven’t seen any indication that this issue is known or being worked on.
As a rule it’s probably best to use physical buttons, especially Power, as little as possible. Mine only serves to turn the phone on. Fingerprint sensor alone to wake.
It’s insane to me, that we have a months old thread about an issue which should have came up day one, heck, first time QA picked up the 3D printed block out of the phone.
This is not normal.
I can understand a lot, and have a lot of patience for this phone despite an absolute mountain of issues for myself and other people in this forum. But this is simply stupid on a whole new level.
I haven’t used an android phone without an option to disable this shortcut for over a decade. Yes, it’s built-in to android. Google doesn’t change it, because it’s either locked behind some piece of code which is protected by copyright law, or they just don’t bother, because 99.9% of smartphone manufacturers either outright disable the shortcut, or give users an option to disable it. Some even ask about it during the first configuration.
My question is, since every, and I’m not exaggerating, every, android phone has it, surely it’s widely available piece of code - why didn’t Fairphone bother to implement it?
I understand that the company is small, and can’t afford a large development team. But the software issues, UX issues or outright bugs are more common than even in the cheapest of Chinese instant e-waste phones. Ridiculous!
However, it’s important to mention most customer facing companies IF they have a forum, it’s enough to discuss your issues there to get an answer. This is yet another instance where Fairphone had to be different
