What is the FP5_SECUNDARY_PCB_BOTTOM_V1? Is something you can buy on the site and change yourself? This could be important to know because if it’s not too expensive someone could decide to replace it oneself without going through the often very long time required by Fairphone support.
As far as the SW is concerned, I’m pretty sure the first thing they do, whatever the problem, is a factory reset and updating the SW to the last release. This is required to start from a known situation.
I think we can assume that there is more than one reason for this message to appear. One might be a hardware issue, another a software issue. Especially if the problem can be reproduced by plugging into the specific dock and fixed by removing the battery repeatedly, that one certainly does not sound like hardware issues to me.
Don’t think so, either, but at least from the repair and recycle document you get an impression about which PCB this is (check PDF pages 31, 32 and 36).
Last week a little water dropped on my screen, it came into the USB-C port and the notification popped up that there was liquid or dirt in the port. So I took apart the device and put it in some rice. Unfortunately the next day when I plugged it to the charger it said “Liquid or dirt in USB-port. USB-port automatically turned off”. But when I unplugged the charged the notification “USB port can be used. The phone no longer detects any liquid or dirt” shows immediately. And this kept on happening everytime. I completed the troubleshooting steps and the result was -299.076mA. The support team gave me the option to send the device for repair or order a new USB-C port.
So I ordered a new USB-C port, 2 days later I changed it and then it started charging again. But at 34% the same notification “Liquid or debris in USB port. USB port is automatically turned off” showed, and again after taking it off the charger it said “USB port can be used. The phone no longer detects any liquid or dirtUSB port can be used. The phone no longer detects any liquid or dirt” immediately.
After turning of and on the phone several times, now my battery is almost dead (7%) so I can’t do much more.
Does anyone had the same experience and if so, what was the solution? Or does anyone know the solution?
Thanks a lot!
Hello Myrthe,
sorry to hear that. I’ve gone through all this as well. There was some other user in this thread who had an intermediate solution. It involved turning off the phone, plug and unplug to slowly charge step by step in cycles of I think 20 to 30 seconds. If you are lucky you can charge your phone to at least 25% that way. But this trick is likely to fail after some time. It’s only to save your battery’s life. So the only solution is to send it in for repair.
The actual repair of my phone was really fast, but to get the repair ticket from support was awful.
My phone is now working since approximately 2 months like normal. Hope this issue won’t come back since it seems somehow to be not too uncommon.
Wish you the best
Sebastian
For the records: rice is a bad idea and can make things worse.
Overall when you tried different cable and charger already I guess you would have to send it in, in case the watee indicator turned red, you will have to pay for the repair.
Hello Max,
it was the same repair some others here had too. Cordon replaced the FP5_SECONDARY_PCB_BOTTOM.
The part itself seems to be pretty cheap. But i haven’t found it in a store yet. Fortunately I’m still in warranty.
I just wonder why the repair manual postrd above lists V2 of that part but they still use V1 for replacement.
Thanks, I did read about this work around in this tread, thanks for adding my post to this! I’ll give it a try to at least be able to backup my data before sending it in for repair. Reading some experiences from other people this is not something you can repair with replacing the USB port.
Do you have any tips to get in contact with the support desk to get a repair ticket? I’m experiencing the same at the moment, on my first email the respons was fast but now I don’t hear anything from them since 1,5 weeks and several emails…
Same issue here. Started with the liquid-notification. A few hours later with another notification that everything is fine and I can use the USB port again. But as soon as I plug a USB-cable in the the notification appears again and no charging. (tried with various cables/chargers/computers which all did work before)
Ok if it takes a month . For my support request I only got one answer which asked for the invoice and some fotos of the phone. After that silence, not a single automatic reply.
At least the delivery of spare parts is fast, I did replace the USB-port which did not help.
I’ve just experienced the problem of the message “USB port disabled, liquid or debris …”.
My FP5 is only a week old, so I was very concerned.
Having read through some of this very long thread, I tried changing the power adapter and cable, and it charged fine.
So then I changed back to the old power adapter I had been using when the port got disabled, but using the cable that didn’t cause a problem, and lo and behold, the problem came back.
So in my case it was definitely caused by a dodgy power adapter.
I shall now go and read more carefully about Fairphone’s requirements for power adapters.

Hello everybody
Sorry to not come back in this topic for 5 months.
I ‘ve contacted the customer service, and after a few basic checks, they sent me a new USB port module so I could attempt a repair n’y myself.
It was covered under warranty. But that wasn’t enough.
So I ended up sending it in for repair.
It came back to me in perfect condition after a few weeks. And again, everything was covered under warranty.
