I checked it again and i take the lcd theory back. The screen on the left is my old screen the screen on the right is the on use currently and the one in the middle isnt used that much but may have been exposed to sunlight at some point. I use the one on the left for about half as long as i did my old screen.
I did take a video with the same device config (full brightness same picture of but i cant find it but the results where that the new fp5s behaved as advertised and the old screen like i discribed in my previous post. Now the screens have degraded and fitting to their respective use time i still think its a hardware thing.
The “darkness” of the screen gets brighter when rotating the phone, in multiple apps at that but that only happens on the LOS microg one, E/OS and Fairphone OS stay the same so that might be a software thing i dont know.
I will test if the color shifted and contrast degraded the same way.
In recovery mode e.g. the screen goes fully black without backlight bleeding. I think it’s a driver issue. With DC Dimming the quality improves as well. But then the brightness sensor is fighting my eyesight.
Hdr content also drastically improves the quality, but doesn’t quite fully eliminate the glow.
And I can attest, the screen is pitch black when you aren’t booted into android yet
I know im late to the party here. When playing a windows movie video or audio file as well. It always seems to run in movie player and sometimes I think it’s off but it isn’t. Its just a complete dark image except when I tap the screen to display information and run time. File types explained here is WMA & WMV. Here is three screenshots of what i mean on this issue. Its a weird thing but yeah I even experience this very issue here in this thread.
i dit som testing again. now in a much darker location. its verry little but yes i see now it looks like some kind of gosting (Led lights that turns on du to induction from the serounding) very licht but consistent glow.
Hey I have been following this thread for almost a year now. I just did the January update and did my test routine even though the release notes did not say anything about fixing this issue and I am very surprised that my screen is now completely black. I have tested two different black screen apps and thehours of black YouTube video in a completely dark environment.
Can Somebody else confirm?
Miracles happen. It will be interesting to see if this increases screen time/battery life. AoD is still gone, but now there’s hope it will return and actually be useful.
Holy moly, they actually fixed it. Thats insane. I was honestly giving up all hope. But they finally pulled through, thank goodness.
Thank you everyone on this thread for making enough noise to get through to the people at FP, and thank you FP for fixing this issue, we can now check this bug off the list.
We had to work with our display supplier on this one. The fix also includes broader driver optimisations, that may improve battery life. While initial signs are promising, we’ll need to complete our standard testing protocols before we can quantify the exact impact on battery consumption.
That’s good news and well done for hanging on in there and getting a result.
But:
Still following: can we now have AOD back please (“Always show time and info”) ? It was removed from settings in July 2024 I suppose because someone at Fairphone judged that it was better to turn it off for everyone rather than live with complaints about battery life.
So: I’m filing a request to re-instate AOD please !
Even though there’s obviously some Fairphone employees reading this thread, make sure to place your AoD request with an official support ticket to make it count!
To be honest, I literally had tears in my eyes when I finally held the phone in my hands after the update at the end of January 2025, which I actually bought in September 2023.
