My FP5 is having charging issues, I need to restart the device several times until it starts to charge.
It shows it’s charging but it’s not. It already happened several times and it messed up my whole day. I used to put my phone to charge before leaving the house, and when I grabbed it I always saw it didn’t charge at all in the past hour.
Tried different cables, different chargers, cleaned the ports, etc. It won’t charge until I have restarted several times. This is very annoying.
I posted on Reddit too and I see others are having the same issue too.
Is this a known issue already? Are there any fixes coming for it? Is there a way to report it to the developers and send logs if needed? Thanks!
Yeah this happens to me too, occasionally. Normally when using the official Fairphone charger.
Just gets to some random % and then stops charging (but it says it IS charging). Normally taking it off charge and putting it back on again gets it going again.
The FP5, in my experience has been a flaming bin fire.
Today it started a new “bug”. Put it on charge and it boot looped until I took it off.
In my case, I have to restart it (sometimes even several times) until it charges again. If I plug it out and then back again it does nothing, I tried a dozen times.
The charger is good and so is the cable.
The most annoying thing as you said, is that IT SHOWS THAT IS CHARGING, but is actually not. So now I constantly live with anxiety and check the phone if it actually charges, so I won’t leave the house again with an empty battery.
and never have problem with not charging, not (non-manually) stoping before 100%, reboot when connect cable, nothing…
but not all (be correct not any charge with max supported 30W…
maximum is ~24W using one lenovo notebook (travel) adapter (but not other/older (clasic) model) and with car charger, others charge ~8-12W, so maybe be problem with official charger or non-official which charge at 30W?
Get it RMA’d before the warranty runs out. If it already has might be time to sell it and buy something else. I wouldn’t even want to throw parts at something like that because it “might” be the battery, or the USB-C board, but its probably the main board which can’t be changed.
IF you are in warrenty, RMA it. One of my biggest regrets with mine was not pushing harder for an RMA
Mine started doing this sometimes as well, i think it started happening after I removed the battery to swap the SD card. Only having issues with standard 5 volt chargers so far.
similar issue: the phone (FP5) shows it’s charging with the charger/cable combination i regularily use, but it is not. Sometimes, changing the cable helps, sometimes changing the charger. a (single) reboot does not help (haven’t tried several reboots yet).
The chargers/cables that won’t charge the phone, do charge other phones - so i would exclude the charger/cable as cause.
Happened the first time this week and today the second time.
I put aside the FP charger and cable that I usually use, and used the charger and cable from my old phone for a week. Surprisingly, it worked fine every time. Now I went back to the FP charger and cable, and at least 1 in 5 times, I have the same issue. It shows it’s charging, but it’s not, or charging extremely slow, like 1% in half an hour. This is really weird, so now I’m pretty sure the FP charger and cable are somehow the problem. The funny thing is that when this happens (that it’s not charging correctly or at all), it always starts with the FP charger and cable, and when changing from the FP charger and cable to another charger and cable, it still won’t charge until I restart the phone. But it always happens first with the FP charger and cable, and never with another one. I don’t even know how to demonstrate this issue to support. If there could be some logs that show all of this info. And once again, I cleaned all ports, on the phone, and on the charger too, they are perfectly clean. The FP charger is relatively new (less than half a year old). My other charger and cable are more than 6 years old.
Update from me, I just ordered a new charge port, it’s getting really bad on mine. Happens with dozens of combinations of chargers and cables at multiple different households and even in the car. And now even on my 100W laptop charger that used to work flawlessly with it. I checked with a little USB meter and it charges at ~65 mA on my 5V3A per port charger that dozens of other devices have 0 issues with. Cleaning the port also hasn’t helped.
I really hope the new port will fix it, otherwise this is strike 3 with the FP5 and my FP journey will come to an end, not intending to spend more money on parts and I cannot wait half a year for an RMA because I cannot be without a phone because of work.
What do you think is the issue on your side? With the FP charger/cable? Hardware issue, maybe the USB port or battery? Or do you think it’s a software issue?
Update from my side, the new charging port fixed it!
I also found a neat application that can show in the status bar how much power the device is currently using, made it super easy to spot if it wasn’t charging when the watt value stayed positive:
