FP4 battery life got worse after Android 13 update

People van for sure decide on their own, however im general ask questions here, thats what the forum is for.

Yes, removing the external SD (and SIM) is clear. The question was regarding the internal dir /sdcard/, but I guess this is cleared as well as /data

A factory reset removes all your installed apps and data, not sure what is stored on internal memory/sd…

I guess a reinstall of the OS will touch everything…

Can you please provide a link to the Systempanel app you are using (I am currently using the AccuBattery app)?
I also encounter a similar reduction in battery life after upgrading to Android 13 (now on FP4.TP25.C.095.20231219, will be soon upgrading to the latest release). I have also disabled 5G (and tried other tips), but without improvement. I notice it particularly when streaming audio (with the display being off) over WIFI; I have tried to disable Mobile data completely (by disabling the SIM), but that has not changed the situation

It is not available anymore, neither in the Playstore nor on the dev webpage

With every fix comes a new major issue. That’s Fairphone’s update policy

Thats just not at all helpful to resolve any issue, so please follow rules of the forum when posting and if you just want to express your frustration there are several discussion topics to do so.

BTW, this has nothing to do with Fairphone’s update policy, it’s just Lubarsky’s Law of Cybernetic Entomology: There’s always one more bug.

But: I took it upon myself to reinstall FP4 from scratch and in the process did one or two extra rounds and lost my Signal Messenger history due to my own stupidity (according to the motto: Backup is easy, Restore is tricky).
In the end, however, it seems to have helped in my case and the battery drain is by far less than before. I really do hope it stays that way

Yes, it’s very good that you have to spend hours backing up and reinstalling to have a halfway functioning phone. And of course it has something to do with Fairphone, no other phone has ever caused me so many problems. If you enjoy putting a lot of time into your cell phone to make sure everything runs “well”, then go for it. For the average user, this device is an absolute disaster.

I used to have different older phones with custom roms in order to have an OS as actual as possible. And the statement for major updates from on to the next Android version always was, to make a fresh and clean installation.
This is something that obviously does not work so well with the FP OTA updates. On the other hand there are not so many phones in the market that happen to get more than one major update in their lifetime.

and again a small update from my side:
my FP4 is on it’s way back from the repair center.
they replaced the battery and apparently didnt find other issues.
well, could be partly my fault, as I’ve put the old battery back in the phone.

anyway: I like the idea of flashing the phone in full.
I dont have that much knowledge of Anfroid phones but if this is comparable to a computer: a factory reset wont help in case install sources are buggy, so replacing everything sounds like a plan!
will give it a try as soon as it’s back

As I wrote, the battery drain is much better, however it is not gone, either. Having written that I am a bit undecided if it was worth the effort. But if you have a good backup (and restore  ) and the time, it is worth a try, anyway.

my FP is clean anyway as I did reset it prior to sending it to the repair center, so I’ll take the chance

Today I upgraded to FP4.TP29.C.0101.20240121, after which the battery drain seems to be as before for Android12, with an idle screen-on discharge current of ~ 370mA (12.2%/h of capacity)

whereas with FP4.TP25.C.095.20231219 the idle screen-on discharge current was ~730mA (22%/h of capacity)

That’s potentially excellent news, although I would had expect them to say so if they had fixed something about the battery issue.
The TP29.C.0101 update/grade description on my phone only mentions the camera updates, January 5th security patches (and some “new wallpaper”?).

Newest Update didn’t change anything for me

Not for me either using the OTA update procedure. The battery drain was still the same

However, it seems to have improved by a clean install using the bootloader installation process. But for sure you need a lot of time and a perfect backup (and restore) in place.

I have a question about the bootloader process. I have flashed some other old phones with Lineage OS. After flashing, some Google features like Google Pay stopped working. Does this problem also exist if I reinstall the original fairphone OS?

My battery drain is also very bad. 30% over night. :pensive:

Well, I never had this on clean installations. I had such behavior only, if I installed newer ROMs via Recovery and did not clean /system and /data before.
The problem will not occur on the FP4 in my opinion, as the data and system partition will be deleted during the process.

So, I installed the os with fastboot. Google Wallet (Pay) still work. Maybe interessting for some of you: The eSIM profile was not deleaded. Now I will watch the battery consumption.

The whole process costed me one day. :frowning:
