My battery life has droppped DRASTICALLY in the past week, even though my usage/network etc hasn’t changed.
My battery life was already quite bad since updating to Android 13 (40% drain during the night!) but now it actually over 80% per night!
Last night i charged it just before sleep. Its connected to the wifi at home. I unplugged it close to 100% and went to sleep. When my alarm went off 8 hours later, my battery was down to 12%!
I checked battery usage to see if anything was draining it, but the only app that had been running (my sleep/alarm app) only used 3%… Wifi used 1% and mobile network 3%…thats it!
It now completely drains my battery within 3 hours, even if I only reply to a few whatsapp messages and play a bit of music over wifi for half an hour.
I wanted to order a new battery today because i just assumed its gone bad after 2 years, but after reading this thread, I’m not so sure anymore as people have stated theyve gotten a new battery to no avail.
It was already bad, never lasting me even a day anymore since the last android update, but since downloading the new camera software this has happened. I don’t know if its related… But it’s driving me mad. My phone has become almost redundant because of the battery issue. I have to be able to charge it every 3-4 hours even when using battery saving mode/airplane mode…
So, here is my update 4 days after the restore. Battery consumption has improved significantly. The average battery usage is 3,7 % per hour. Over night only a few percents.
The recovery is definitely worth it. But you need much time for backup and the restore.
Your numbers are very similar to the numbers I got after the clean install.
@Nicole_de_Groot My experience with such spontaneous behavior is that it is usually caused by single apps. You could check with some battery monitoring tool like AccuBattery (or slightly more technical Better Battery Stats) if there is any app that started to use more battery than before.
Hello everyone,
since the last update with the new camera firmware, I also have the impression that the battery is much faster. I thought this might be due to the age of the battery.
Since the update, the battery runs out much faster than usual.
And if I follow the thread here, I’m not alone. I hope more people will get in touch to find out if it’s since the update.
For what’s worth, mine didn’t change since the FP4.TP29.C.0101 “Big Camera” update.
On my FP4 too battery life got worse since the A13 update (see further up), but the amount of “worse” didn’t change with the last update.
That’s really strange. I hadn’t noticed any problems with the Android 13 update and the battery life itself. Only since the last update in February. How different everyone’s perception is.
@Lars_Hennig I will look into that, thanks. I haven’t installed anything new app-wise, but have installed some updates of ones I already had. Really hope this is the fix because its very frustrating if I’m on the road!
That doesn’t necessarily matter: Once, a long time ago (on another phone), I had the antivirus go crazy. For some reason it started gobbling inordinate amounts of battery. Till I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, and everything went back to normal. Go figure.
Oh damn hahaha I’ve never had anything of the sort… So thats good to know. I installed the app Lars recommended and will keep an eye on the stats coming from that… Who knows!
Hi, when my battery suddenly drops, I check if Wi-Fi Scanning is enabled. Almost always that is the culprit. Google or some sneaky apps enable it from time to time.
So, go to Settings > Location > Location Services
and disable Wi-Fi Scanning.
Please let me know if it was enabled and if the battery drain is better after disabling it.
Note that Wi-Fi scanning will continuously search for new networks, even if you have disabled Wi-Fi! How evil is that?
Well, how else can Google keep their list of all WiFi network SSIDs/locations up to date?..
Note WiFi scanning had indeed switched back on on my phone (I know I had turned it off), so I switched it back off and will check if this changes anything to my battery usage. Thanks.
(I guess not, because right now I’m at home in the boonies, there is only one single WiFi network visible, mine… Not much to scan, compared to the two score networks you see at any point in the city.)
Hmm, but without scanning, you don’t actually know there is only one SSID So I guess the number of Wifi APs around should not have a big influence on the consumption of scanning…
I’ve recently started noticing this behavior as well. My phone used to last at least 1,5 days, sometimes even whole 2 days on battery, now it barely lasts a day. And yes, the battery health (according to AccuBattery) did drop to about 81%, but I doubt it happened this suddenly. According to the battery plot, it looks like the phone simply stopped entering deep sleep. There used to be fairly wide “flat” spots at times when the display was off. Now it looks like a continuous linear drop.
I had both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning enabled prior to A13 update, so that’s not it. Any other ideas?
dear all,
After a few days of usage I must say: flashing the phone is definitely worth it!
for me, battery usage seems to be normal again.
can’t tell if there is a difference between the latest update and the one before, though as I used the latest image to flash. (and dont expect this one to fix the issue, as it’s not mentioned in the release notes + the updates before didn’t change a thing for me)
Very annoying if that’s the only solution. Even if I somehow found the time to learn how to do it (and by chance managed to not brick my phone!), I definitely don’t have the time to reinstall and reconfigure everything from scratch.
Yes, that is absolutely true. But as I have mentioned before, with my older phones running AOSP or Lineageos it was always recommended to cleanly flash a new major version of Android for the first upgrade. Later, with minor upgrades that was not necessary anymore (i.e. from 10.1 to 10.2), but for example from 10 to 11 it was necessary. There was only one exception with 12L, so from 12 to 12L they also recommended the clean flash.
I clean flash usually meant to clean /system and /data during the process and I guess the adb flash tool from FP does exactly that.
Sure, that’s usually SOP with all OSes, but then again most OSes doesn’t change major versions every year (and probably soon, every month )…
What does that mean for user data? In Linux you can put /home on a different partition so the OS can go wild on /, but I don’t know how much Linux structure there still is in Android.
The only thing in Android that is actually Linux is the kernel IMO. If they would have a decent user and permission architecture analogous to Linux, they would not have the need for this stupid SAF stuff.
