Can't receive or make calls

In Italy for the same issue with VoLTE I changed my operator from CoopVoce to ho mobile. With this one no issue till now

Edit: here the thread in Italian:

Has anyone solved it in any way?

I did. After manually installing the fp os this has not been an issue. Manually installing the os was, however, fairly complicated. Contacting fp support, and sending the phone to their repair center, will probably be easier.

Is there a guide for the fp OS manually installing?

Manually installing the OS requires you to unlock your phone(bootloader) to allow installation of the fpos or any other os. In my case, this process made is so many apps would not work. To get the apps working again I had to lock the phone(bootloader). Locking the phone/bootloader comes with a risk of breaking your phone beyond repair.

If you still want to attempt it there is this guide:

But if you’re gonna try it, I would suggest looking at my other post: Can't lock bootloader

I would also advice you to read other posts about unlocking/locking the phone/bootloader etc. This might help you avoid issues.

You are from Italy, did you read the linked italian topic?

Hello!

I seem to have hit the exact same issue.
Phone worked fine, last night I started getting some issues when I tried to use my phone as a hotspot, and today I stopped being able to receive or make phone calls.
I still could send text messages and browse the internet on data, but very soon after that stopped working as well.

Now my phone does recognize that a DNA (The finnish teleoperator I use) Sim card is inserted, but it cannot connect to the wireless network, nor can it make phonecalls.
I tried using my mothers Sim, (she also has DNA sim) but that didn’t work. I’m now trying to get another phone that I can test my Sim in. Unfortunately my operator doesn’t have any customer support online I can access, so I can’t make sure the issue is not on their end. Shouldn’t be, since my mum things work just fine.

What I’m wondering is, what broke? Like why did this happen? And is there really no other fix than reinstalling OS?

Before reinstalling I would start with a factory reset.

You can also reset only the network settings first

I considered factory reset, but I figured I should backup my phone first.
But the backup seems to require a network connection, since you gotta do it with Google.
And since I no longer have a network connection, so Idk what to do.

If there is some way to backup the phone in an offline mode with a cable connected to a computer or on to a SD card, that would be a good start I guess.

A manual install includes a factory reset unless your bootloader is already unlocked and should stay unlocked…

I’m not yet considering factory reset, I first need to figure out a way to backup the phone without an internet connection.

After that, I can consider the factory reset.

I have no idea as to what causes this issue. My best guess is some software error, maybe created during an update.
Manually installing the os was my last effort at a solution. I did try a lot of other things first. Nothing else worked, but maybe it will for someone else.

I’ll consult the support team, or at least attempt to, they move incredibly slow, and I don’t really want to go weeks without a working phone.

So what worked for you was doing the whole, open bootloader, flash to an older OS, re-locking the bootloader thing?
Did you then update to the most recent update, or stay on the one what worked?
And did you at any point notify the Fairphone team, so they might be aware of this issue?

It is curious that it happened to us at different times, so it can’t have been a specific update that hurt multiple phones, it must have been something in using the phone that caused it…

I flashed the current version, not an older one. But yes, after I did that the issue disappeared. I can now call and receive calls without any issue.
I contacted fp support before I did it. The result was emails back and forth for a couple of months before they suggested that I send the phone to their repair center. As I am dependent on apps on the phone this was difficult for me to do, so I did the manually install myself.
As previously stated, I don’t know the reason behind the issue. Since a manually install fixed it I would think it’s fair to assume that it’s a problem in the software, not in the hardware. The only reason I’m thinking it’s connected to the update process is that updates are known to sometimes create bugs and other issues.

You did flash an older version first as described in the topic you linked above…

That sounds a lot like when I tried to get a minor issue fixed…
Lot of back and forward over the course of 6 months, with very little updates on how they were troubleshooting the issue, and eventually I gave up trying to get it fixed.

Maybe a manual software install is the way to go for me too.
I too would rather not have to send my phone away for weeks, as I too am dependent on having my phone around.

The tutorials on how to do this don’t seem too difficult to follow, and now that I managed to get a backup, there shouldn’t be too big of a risk of bricking the phone.

The first flash I did was with an older version, yes. But after I updated, everything I did was with the current os version at the time.
I don’t think the install of the older version was necessary to resolved the issue. And my understanding is that locking the bootloader with an older version installed can brick the device.
I think flashing with the current version from the start might be better then what I did.

I would try every other option, including factory reset, first.
I was also prepared to buy a new phone, in case the manual install destroyed this one.

The problem is, just following the tutorial you might not be able to lock the bootloader again. If you make it so that the phone doesn’t boot into the os, and the get_unlock_ability is 1, maybe you can avoid this issue.

I’m not very knowledgeable about these things, and I don’t know if it will resolve the issues you are having.

So hang on, you manually flashed into an older version, then updated the phone normally, before locking the bootloader as instructed on the official site?

I am for sure first trying a factory reset, but seeing as you have fixed an issue very similar to what I am having, and seem to have done so without any major issues, I figured following your steps should get me to a working phone.
Just gotta make sure I follow those steps correctly.

I manually flashed an older version and updated yes. But ran into the issue of many apps not working anymore. I figured out this was probably because I had unlocked the bootloader, and then tried locking it following the tutorial. This did not work. That’s when I created the “Can’t lock bootloader” post I linked earlier.
