When taking a photo with the normal camera app, it comes out empty/broken, but after taking another picture with a different camera app, the pictures are restored. (it’s probably best explained with a video, so I made a screen recording, but I can’t upload it here)
The pictures will also randomly fix themselves after some time if I don’t do the strange Open Camera hack I discovered on accident, but that can take like a day.
For me, this is perfectly reproducible and happens like that every time.
It started with the update to Android 15.
I tried with different gallery apps and different camera settings but that didn’t change anything.
hello and welcome to the community.
how do you open your camera app? the shortcut from the lock screen, using double press on the power button or from the app with the screen unlocked?
I use the default Camera app, and Open Camera. For gallery I have an open source app called Aves but I tested it with the default google gallery too, same thing.
I remembered that clouds and links are a thing so here’s the video: Proton Drive (it’s kinda bad quality but you can see the bug)
Hmm it looks like it could be related but idk. I don’t have any issues with my phone killing apps randomly or when they are in the background, not that I noticed anyway, and it doesn’t matter how long I have my Camera app open after taking the picture. Also, it’s not like I can’t take pictures or like they are permanently currupted - after they fix themselves they are totally normal, and they always fix themselves.
In the second post you linked, it does sound like some of the commenters have the same issue as me, but others don’t.
I don’t know if something could be messed up with my folder path that the camera saves the pictures in, and idk how to find out?
In the app I can only choose between saving pictures on internal storage or SD card, I can’t give it a specific folder to use. And the bug happens either way.
But I did some investigating and new pictures actually show up like this:
But are also saved in the ‘Camera’ folder completely normal and unbroken-looking.
Which is really just weird.
Also did some more testing with apps and:
bug also happens with Open Camera uninstalled
Fossify Camera Beta app takes normal pictures but doesn’t restore broken ones like Open Camera does
Open Camera only restores the pictures if I enable the ‘Storage Access Framework’ option to make it save in the exact same folder that the Camera app saves in
I wonder if having Open Camera pictures in the DCIM/Camera folder might also be what breaks it in the first place?
Or if Aves has anything to do with it? (can’t uninstall for testing because that would delete hidden pictures)
But yeah overall it doesn’t bother me too much and I’ll just wait and see if any future patch fixes it. I just thought it was an interesting bug to report, and it is inconvenient.
I confirm. I have the problem with photos not being saved from time to time (I have seen no recoveries, though). When photos are not saved, it’s if I take a picture and switch to another app quickly. If I wait on the camera screen for a few seconds, the issue does not arise. So, it is likely to be related to agressive app killing.
