Auto screen brightness doesn't work in low light again (Android 14 Update)

Hi!

In Android 13 there was an issue with the brightness flickering when it was dark, that got fixed after a while.

Now with the update to Android 14, there’s a new issue with the auto brightness:
No matter how dark it is, the minimum screen brightness is at around 20%, for me it’s 17%.
I may turn off the auto brightness and set the brightness to the lowest setting, that works… But that’s kinda the idea of using the auto brightness

Screenshot attached, screenshot was made in complete darkness.

Why dont you adjust to 0 with adaptive brightness enabled? The system should learn and mine did

I tried, still jumps back to 17%.

Also: I see, that the auto brightness shortly goes to 0% and one second later, it’s back at 17% again.

I’m confused :man_shrugging:

How often did you try? Do you use extra dim or dark mode?

I have exactly the same problem. In absolute darkness the minimum brightness is about 17%.

After one second adjusting to 0% it jumpes automatically back to 17%.

After 2nd change to 0% it stays there.

If I turn off and on the display/phone the brightness jumpes automatically back to 17%.

This is every night since the update to Android 14 (around 14 days ago) exactly the same. My FP5 learns absolute nothing…

Please report to support then.

Oh, I thought the support has its eyes in this forum?
However, I created a support ticket including the URL to this conversation here.

No they havent as noted “everywhere” when creating account etc.

I get the idea that the auto brightness got worse again since the Android 14 update. I don’t have DC Dimming enabled. In dark environments it keeps the brightness at about ~15% or 20% and it doesn’t learn based on user input. It was usable in the last few months of the Android 13 version. Now it seems back to the old habit of burning your eyes at random and not going to 0% brightness when it’s dark.

Nah, it’s not the old behavior!
Old behavior was jumping around every second or sth like that, that’s not an issue any more!

Btw, I’m currently at minimum 9% brightness with auto brightness now.

Idk, I’m confused.

from Android 14 update until now having same problem,

  • in total dark, auto not set less than 17%
  • if i slide to %0, after power off/on: 0% is some sec and return to 17%

now i found & try reset BL data:

  • Settings/Apps/All apps
  • in upper-right 3dot select “Show system”
  • find “Device Health Services” app
  • Storage & cache/Clear storage/Reset adaptive brightness

and in low&dark go auto to 0%, after power off/on keep on 0%,
on high light go to 100%… bso far only tested in indoor-artificial lighting

Edit: auto to 0% work with and without DC dimming

Very nice!
Didn’t know about this specific reset possibility!

Followed your description, adaptive brightness now goes to 0% in total darkness!

Unfortunately this only worked for about 2 days for me. Anyone else with a better success story? Even when using Extra Dim it remains very bright in a dark room.

Here’s the same. Works for two or three days and now it’s back to 8% last night.

Is anyone able to communicate this issue to FP support? I’m stuck in a loop. I explained the whole issue. Then they ask the build number a month later, then after I provided it they say it was fixed in the latest update. It wasn’t of course. And repeat. Now support says it was already fixed in the past, yeah, in Android 13, as I already mentioned to them, but this is a regression in Android 14, as I did mention to them. Now they ask the build number again…

@Zeratoxx can you mark this topic as not-solved? The fix is just temporary.

@UPPERCASE I had the same experience with support , I was asked to send my build number four times… At that point I was tired of dealing with the support.

The topic should still be marked as “not-solved” as far as I see

Is this only a problem with auto/adaptive brightness? Is it possible to fix the brightness manually with the auto brightness off? I am thinking about buying a FP5. That’s why I ask.

This issue shouldn’t bother you if you prefer to manually adjust your brightness.

The minimum brightness is too bright, at night I need to use a third party app to apply a brightness filter.
