Apps reloading when switching apps

Unfortunately, we’re also not getting any replies to support tickets.

Yes, setting only one wallpaper prevents it from resetting, but has no effect on the memory management.

No, I am suggesting to use different wallpapers for Lock and Home screens. Sorry if I wasn’t clear.

I tried it these last days, unfortunately still the same problems for me.
NB. I run on Android 15 now, no changes as well on memory management.

I am experiencing the same issues. Apps keep closing in the background even if I almost immediately go back and just have 2 or 3 apps open. Spotify that keeps closing while I am playing music is the most annoying thing, it also often stutters while I am using the phone.

Besides, I bought a Fairphone 6 and the migration app keeps closing/crashing on the FP5 which prevents my apps and data being copied. Not sure if that is related to this specific issue, but it could be…

Interesting, I have this issue on my FP 5 since Android 15 and mainly when I switched between user accounts (I use a social media account for work, no social apps on my own account  ). After switching back, the phone lacks memory on previously used apps. Rebooting is the only work around I’ve found so far.

This looks like the same problem: FP5: Android 15 killing background apps more aggressively

There’s also apparently going to be a live support chat, maybe that’ll actually get replies: Fairphone Customer Support Update - August 2025

@aichitho, you may want to follow the undermentioned:

For some applications, it may be application-specific. For others, a fault of the OS.

Thanks for the hint.

I would assume this FF ‘bug’ is also just a symptom of bad memory management of the OS. Based on this I would assume that FF receives the “onTrimMemory() “ (to notify an app that memory is running low and that it should reduce its allocations). FF does that by deloging tabs to make sure it will not be killed completely. What do you think @rokejulianlockhart ?

I am afraid that we need FP to fix the memory management, switch OS or maybe do some fancy Magisk hacking.

@aichitho, I’ve little better of an idea than you do, but I’ll err on that side:

That shan’t occur. It’s the most prominent issue amongst vendors’ distributions:

https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/122098785#comment356:~:text=Per%20forum.fairphone.com/t/115195/71%2C%20this%20occurs%20to%20significantly%20more%20than%20merely%20CHN%20OEMs

Most of the ones I’ve tried appear to do this quite well, especially CalyxOS. However, I’ve yet to locate an alternative AOSP distribution that has equivalent support for Google Mobile Services, so I doubt that it’s a feasible alternative for most.

postmarketOS technically supports WayDroid, which provides an image that supports GMS, but it’s not a pleasant experience, and shan’t be for some time.

I fear you might not get very far with this. Patching a compiled OS’s memory management is a herculean task. Even if you do, would you be confident that it’s stable, especially across OS upgrades? [1]

What about the fp6 does it have the same problem ?

I’ve been using the Fairphone 6 for about a week now and I haven’t experienced this issue yet. Only thing that I regularly experience is the notorious FPS lag spikes.

Same issues here too.

fp5, latest updates. the app killing happens here, too. since the latest update, i´d say.

i thought maybe my microSD card was faulty, because apps were getting killed when in the background and especially app switching became very slow.. but i checked and all those apps are on internal memory and can´t be moved, so it seems to be related to memory management.

So you have a SD card formatted as internal extension or as external addition?

Same issue here. I usually listen to videos in Firefox in the background and If I change apps, tab memory is removed and stops playback. It works if I close all the other tabs and keep opened apps at a minimum. Started with Android 15.

when it first happened, i had the card (a then 5 month old lexar silver professional) formatted as internal. it worked well for 5 months, until it didn´t. then i formatted the card as external, still the apps would crash and the phone was very slow sometimes when switching apps. the fact the apps in question (mostly banking apps) were still there after formatting the card tells me they were on the internal memory all the time.

then i took out the card and formatted it again on my pc, and used the phone without any card and set the background apps limit to “3” in devOpt. at first, the apps would still crash and the phone was still slow. but after a day and another complete shutdown of the phone, it now behaves like normal. i even inserted the card again (now formated as external).

btw, i thoroughly tested the card on my pc via h2testw and ChkFlash for hours on end. no errors, the card is fine.

since this stuff started after the A15 update, i can only guess what the reason for this is..

Formatting as internal extension you never know what actually is saved where, incl system, and can cause all kind of issues up to complete data loss. So in general not really something to recommend. So good its solved for you

I’ve been having all sorts of issues, from having to put two different background images for lock and home, to apps being randomly killed, to Android auto suddenly crashing while driving, to the phone heating up extremely fast, and most annoyingly of all, apps being reset every time I switch. Certainly after android 15 “upgrade”.

Is there any official communication from the company on when we can expect a fix to the root of all these? I’ve had a fairphone 3 few years ago and got fed up with support and their expectation of me to spend a crazy amount of energy debugging the phone. Then my conscience persuaded me to give this company another go, but I feel like having a fairphone is not fair to my time and sanity..!

so, tl,dr:

make sure you have no sd card OR the card as EXternal memory.

also, try upping the number of “allowed background tasks” from standard (ie=0) in developer options and see if it fixed the issues.

it´s weird google hasn´t fixed blatant issues with “internal memory” in .. what, 10 iterations? could well be that some internal stuff (“system”) that was not intended to land there has been on the card. STILL that should not lead to issues, only to (rel. minor) slowdowns at max. but then there comes the A15 update, with who knows what they changed.

wonder why the phone still had issues after formatting / removing the card, though.
