Apps reloading when switching apps

Memory management issues here too, makes the phone barely usable in some contexts.

Let’s say I open a Google search and start typing: the keyboard (SwiftKey) disappears and reappears 2 or 3 times in a row until it finally stays for good.

At the same time, my Mi band app restarts too (the icon disappears and reappears in the notification bar)

If I play something on Spotify and just let the phone locked, there’s a 100% chance it will be killed in the next 30min. I’m not even multi-tasking at this point! When I do, Spotify stays up like 10min max and gets killed.

When I go to the memory section of the My Fairphone app, it’s always around 50-60%.

And of course, if I’m doing something on an app and launch another one, the first one gets killed and has to reload when I go back to it. Very difficult to do bank checks for online payments for example.

I don’t have an SD card. Battery optimisation is disabled for the apps I mentioned. The max activities thing in the developper settings didn’t change anything, neither the other setting which requires to restart the phone. I restart the phone regularly.

The problem was already there on Android 14 and is still there after the update.

I learned to use split screen for this!

Wow, that is a lot worse than for me. I would say I currently experience recently used background apps being killed 3-5 times per week with something killed that annoys me. Like, AntennaPod, Firefox with running video, or the keyboard (AnySoftKeyboard). Spotify I haven’t used on the phone recently.

Is that always present for you, or is it better right after a reboot?

Do you sometimes have the battery saver on, and does it make a difference?

SD card in use?

With such an aggressive app-kill-rate I think I would give up. Contact Fairphone support during the week between 10 and 12 in live chat?

Always present, and I never put the battery saver on. I suspected there might be a bug around this, like being on while saying it’s off. I don’t know. And no SD card.

I submitted a ticket, I’ll try the live chat for sure. Thanks

Okay… Sorry to hear. The AI of the live chat will ask for a ticket number. Don’t mention it, otherwise you will never get to a human

Experiencing the same problems since I first booted my new FP5 one month ago, number of previous apps that can be switched to without reloading fluctuates between none and three.

Music play crash also appears occasionally with Deezer or Tunein, when locked or using other apps.

The behavior was also observed under A14, now under A15.

Firefox reloading tabs, as mentioned by others already, makes banking etc really difficult (yes, split is a fallback option)

Even signal entirely reloads often when switching there - never ever observed this on numerous other devices, such as FP3, Samsung S10+ on /e/os, etc…

I have a work profile, which is sometimes disabled, and an SD card (only as storage). Energy/background settings per app set properly.

I also hope that fairphone rolls out a fix soon.

sadly, it´s not, since some apps, especially banking apps, prohibit split screen. paypal, trade republic,.. all block splitscreen use.

FWIW, I found apps were killed slightly less often when i do NOT use Nova launcher. With Niagara it´s slighly better, Quickstep is best, but I hate it. The phone is much faster. Apps are still killed regularly almost at once I switch between them, but not ALL the time, only most of the time. Yayyy.

Could someone who’s allowed to create polls create one for me? I’d like to know if people seeing this problem have the 6GB or 8GB model.

Hey,

To add some information, I got this issue since Android 15 is installed with the security update of the 5th of June 2025. I never had any issue before this installation.

So basically, since the installation, applications restart when they get in background, QuickStep crashes (sliding up to apps then down to get back to wlecome is enough to make it crash).
the worse is with Android Car Play. I cannot listen to messages anymore, and the phone restarts when I try to do something sometimes randomly, sometimes not.

But I don’t have the music stoping after 5 minutes.

Support is saying that android 15 is making a mess and they are working on a fix (no delay). I asked for a turnaround in the meantime, nothing proposed.

@Sialagio

The fix for quickstep crashing issue since Android 15 is already out.

The delay due to FairPhone update country rollout and each operator makes that update may take some days to weeks to reach your Fairphone.

It didn’t reach mine for now.

Maybe the issue described in this thread is related to the quickstep one.

For the time being, for a “turnaround in the meantime”, I use fossify launcher from f-droid, simple, light, very similar to quickstep, maybe I’ll keep it after the update anyway.

Edit : update reached my phone yesterday (05/09)

Update on my issues:

Since a lot of people here are mentioning launchers and I’m using one (Minimalist Phone), I decided to give it a try: go back to Quicksteps and find out if my launcher is the cause of the memory issues.

So I did that, and I encountered the Quickstep crash issue (well described here: Quickstep keeps stopping - #76 by Meaghan ). And that was hell of an experience: Quickstep crashed all the time, but I also had a lot of other system apps crashing like “System UI”. I definitely think the memory issues came from this: multitasking made the whole thing crash, again and again.

This was some days before the update rolled out, so I decided to factory reset my phone, and the bug disappeared. I think the memory issues disappeared too, even if I can’t be sure because I received and applied the Quicksteps update like 2 days after.S

So now, it’s back to normal (I guess): apps like Swiftkeys or Spotify sometimes get killed in the background, but at a very very lower rate (like once a week). Looks like a normal memory management to me.

The weird thing is that factory resetting my phone (before the Quicksteps update) felt like applying for real the A15 update, as if the update from A14 to A15 failed somehow.

Anyway, if you’re in a rush: a factory reset should do the trick (even if I’m not certain of that) ; otherwise I hope you’ll get the Quicksteps update soon as it looks like it fixes the problem.

Good luck!

I’m seeing the same issue on my fp5. It is becoming a right pain for banking apps!

I got the monthly update yesterday, and everything is muuuch smoother and snappier since then. Apps don’t keep unloading. The weird thing is that it wasn’t mentioned at all in the update notes :person_shrugging:

Not here, though. Switching between apps does not work, the apps will always be shutdown and reloaded. Got worse.

Also for me the problem persists after the FP5.VT2E.C.059.20250908 update. No noticable changes.

My experience with that issue is inconsistent.
I have had with quickstep, then switched to Nova, it helped a bit, after the update which mentioned improving quickstep I switched back to this launcher, but the issue persisted (or came back after a short improvement when I deleted cache).
Two weeks ago I switched to Pear launcher and the issue with clearing all the apps option greyed is gone. But sometimes the apps are not responsive and taking screenshots unreliable.

Edited to say I use 3 button navigation.

Quite right. The main improvement brought by FP5.VT2E.C.059 is a fix for the fingerprint sensor that caused so many problems updating to A15.

Remember this thread dates back well before A15

Reading clementl3 above, it would be interesting to know of cases where a factory reset didn’t solve the problem, especially if done just after a successful update.

I’m going to close this topic here, as we in the meantime are duplicating and mixing Android Versions and in the meantime everyone should be on A15 I guess
