What is the small hole above the SIM card slot for?

What is the small hole left of the the SIM card slot release hole for?

Unfortunately I stick the SIM card removal tool in it.

Most likely the microphone.
It was mentioned in the forum it should not be fatal

I am more concerned about your SIMtray - is it now not retrievable?

Bottom microphone I assume.
Didn’t find the schematics, iFixIt should have it all explained if you want to confirm though.

If you want to check it still works, use the testing tool in the My Fairphone app

Yes, thanks. I tested both top/bottom. Both works. :slightly_smiling_face:

I had a similar issue when first configuring the phone for use. The provided video explaining how to open and close the sim tray does not actually show which hole to insert the SIM tool into, and obscures the hole with the presenter’s hand during the entire length of the video when the hole is being used. Likewise, the provided manual does not differentiate between the holes. Given they are right next to each other and SIM tray release systems where the holes are located right next to the SIM tray are common, IMO FP need to clarify the manual and enhance the relevant section of the video.

Hi, I have just had a look as I do not have a FP6.

The manual I found does not have pictures! That is indeed not helpful.

There is also a quick guide, with pictures but it does not even mention holes.

The support article gets slightly better but it somehow ignores the fact that there are two holes next to each other

Look at the bottom of your phone and push this tool into the tiny hole

But I have to give justice to the video (see below the screenshot). Plus I would assume in order to eject the tray you need to operate the tray, would that make sense? So the tray hole should be operated on.

To sum up, I applaud the idea of more precise illustrations and clear wording acknowledging two holes next to each other.

I watched the video without knowing which hole was the correct hole and it did not inform me: The finger is a very large pointing device compared to the size of the holes. The screenshot shows the finger point into the vague region of both holes, it could be pointing to either of them as far as I could tell. I figured it out using logic: out of the two holes the one physically on the SIM tray is more likely to be the correct one, but I was largely guessing and for all I knew I was sticking the SIM tool into some sensor. I have previously owned phones where the hole was physically located next to the SIM tray, not on it.

This is obviously not a huge problem as I have figured it out and seemingly most other people have too. Yet, the OP did stick their tool in the wrong hole, so a documentation issue does exist.

Even better would be physical marking on the SIM tray - a little drawing of a SIM card next to the hole - that way the phone is self documenting and one does not need to refer to external documentation to get the SIM tray out.

A pic like this (without the magnetic connector of course) should suffice to prevent errors I presume.

A post was split to a new topic: Magnetic Adapter/cables

Here’s the original picture of the underside of my FP6.

Again, the left hole is a microphone (bottom)!!!
An unfortunate arrangement, not only if the lighting isn’t good. No problem to put the sim tray tool inside.

I would greatly appreciate it if the user manual included real pictures of the components and explained their functions (microphones, wide-angle cameras, etc.).
