Hi,
Today I wanted to install a memory expansion in my Fairphone 6. Since I couldn’t find the original SIM tool, I used a paperclip. However, this only removed the cover, not the entire SIM card tray.
It seems the SIM card holder is broken. I found the original removal tool and when ic use it, only the top cover comes out and the SIM card and tray stay inside. and SIM card is detected.
So what can I do?
The tray should definitely have come out in one piece (cover + the actual “drawer”). I doubt that it is the paperclip’s fault. Can you spot (with some light) if there is still a entry point visible in the remainder of the tray? Perhaps that can still eject the remainder of the tray.
If you are a bit handy you could try the following:
Go to How to replace a spare part
Now dismantle the loudspeaker, USB-poort and the display. Perhaps you can now reach the SIM cardholder. And see whether the holder is broken or if you’re lucky it just became loose.
I can fully understand if you find this to adventurous with a new phone.
I just dismounted both the speaker (on the one side of the phone) and the display (on the other side of the phone) and can only confirm that the card tray goes inside in the midframe without even being visible from either “naked” side. There seems little point in me making photos as all what is visible is already in the photos that Meaghan linked to:
The card tray is BELOW what is visible in the red circle in the first photo here and BELOW the near-squared grey area in the lower left corner (to the left of the black and white warning sign) in the second photo here:
I also tried to measure how deep the pin goes to eject the card tray and this should be around 8-9 millimetres.
Thank you so much for all the information. I also think you can’t access the slot from the inside. I also believe there’s a lock/latch inside that holds the rest of the tray in place (e.q. nano memory cards). The sim card itself works properly.
I’ve ordered a new, complete sim card tray. Then I’ll contact a local repair shop and discuss it with them. Otherwise, I’ll open a support ticket.
Thank you for the information provided.
Please note that unauthorised opening of the phone might void the warranty.
4.3.13 Services, including repairs, performed outside Fairphone’s official repair flow as outlined in article; (…)
However, opening and/or taking apart the replaceable parts themselves may cause damage and is not covered by Our Warranties
I would hate it if the forum advice would lead you to losing your warranty rights
Thank you for this notice. I am a technician and, also therefore, I won’t open any device while it’s under warranty.
I’m waiting for the new SIM card tray and will take again a closer look. Perhaps the rest of the SIM card/tray is only held in place by the contacts, and they can be removed from the outside with a special tool.
A paperclip is to thick, you can’t put it in deep enough. Put the ‘lid’ back in place and try with a thinner pin to see if the tray itself can be unlocked.
I reread what I have written and realised that was at best confusing. Funny how the brain works as it took me two days to realise.
What I meant was
taking a phone to a third party repairer and asking them to open a part of the phone which is not meant to be opened by a user, would not be advisable at this point
What @urs_lesse performed which was opening the phone following the tutorials should be absolutely fine. (Apart from the rare cases when the user breaks the connector when reassembling the display, etc).
Unfortunately in your case, @ulweal simple opening the phone has been verified as not sufficient.
I’ve found the way, going through the support process, to get an rma ticket. My phone is now on the way from germany to france for repair.
Give here an info when it comes back.
So, I got my fp6 back from Cordon france. 3 days per UPS from germany to france, 3 days from france back, 3 days for repair. Among other things the motherboard was swaped, so I have a new IMEI. This repair causes 2 questions:
the fp-app wants a new registration for the extended warranty
also in the device information in the app the “activation date” and “battery manufacture date” is “unknown”. So the used days in home screen of the app does not count.
I opened a support ticket and wait for reply what is to do.
