SPUSU tell me Fairphone4 is only 2G& 3G

I’ve been having connection issues with my Fairphone4. Calls dropping out, not being heard by the people I call. I’m using SPUSU, an EE reseller.

I’ve spoken to their support and was told my Fairphone only works on G2 & G3. As EE are currently disconnecting those, my phone will have problems and I need a new phone or a new network.

Is this true?

No thats wrong, the FP4 can use VoLTE. It might be it doesnt work with the provider.

Hello
Unfortunately there have been some issues reported with SPUSU
Please search the forum.

The one I found might be relevant

Yes, I wrote that. I switched the network provider because of that. I use Bob now, that works for me.

I’m on EE and I’ve 5G on my three-year old FP4 without any issue. In fact, I bought my FP4, advertised as a 5G phone, from EE directly, as they were reselling it then. My two-year plan ended last year and I’m now SIM-only with EE and I’ve no issues. My sister is on a FP4 with O2 and also has full 5G coverage. So, I think they’re mistaken

I don’t require a lot of data, I use less than a Gb a month, which makes EE very expensive, same goes for O2. I was hoping an EE reseller would work out, but apparently not. I guess they cut out all the bells & whistles to keep the prices low.

Thanks for that. I’ve mailed Spusu to check Fairphone 4 won’t work on their system. If so, I’ll be back on the deal sites for a replacement.

I’ve set my phone to Wi-Fi calling. I’ve got no way of knowing if it works or not. Either way, it won’t work out of the house.

You need 4G Calling enabled, is it enabled?

To your very specific point (to rephrase: “how do I know if Wi-Fi calling works on my FP4?”) you can enable “Display network name in status bar” in Settings → Display → Network name then toggle on Network name; if Wi-Fi calling is working (supported by your network) you will see the phrase “Wi-Fi calling” in the network name in the top left of your status bar. I hope that helps!

I speak with confidence from experience when I used Penny Mobile (1p mobile) - in the UK - an MVNO on EE. When I switched to spusu (also a MVNO on EE in the UK) I assumed that Wi-Fi calling would still work; but it does not  It seems that spusu have not configured their network/ SIM to support Wi-Fi calling on the FP4. Both spusu and FP support say they have no plans to change that.

I do know that my wife’s Pixel 6a supported Wi-Fi calling on spusu, but for some reason the 6a stopped working on spusu so she moved to Lebara (a MVNO on Vodafone in the UK).

@PenY I can assure you that the FP4 works on spusu in the UK and supports 5G. See my separate post about Wi-Fi calling which does not work on the FP4 on spusu. Hope that helps!

Have you asked spusu for a replacement SIM, in case that is the problem?

I didn’t get far enough with the phone support to mention a replacement sim. I was asked what phone I used and then told it wouldn’t work and bye bye, move to another service.

I’ve written to Spusu and not had a reply. I have a few days until I have to pay for another month. I’m looking at other services. I don’t need the hassle of rubbish connections. I’ve had that with Three.

Thanks for the info. I’ve followed your directions and there is no “Wi-Fi calling” icon.

Obviously I’m wasting my time. I’ve had problems, with Spusu and previously Three, which I’ve put down to living in the sticks, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. Recently everyone is claiming to have G4 & 5 running here. I know it’s not.

Yes. I thought it was. but it ain’t!

@PenY May I offer some advice, based on the following assumptions?

Assumptions:

  1. Wi-Fi calling is important for you because the mobile signal on EE/ spusu is poor in your home

  2. 4G/ 5G calling is important for you because you want the best service whilst out-and-about

  3. You are confident about enabling / disabling Wi-Fi calling, 5G and 4G, and VoLTE on your FP4

Given those assumptions, you know you need an alternative to spusu that supports Wi-Fi calling on the FP4. I have tried my FP4 on spusu, Penny Mobile (1p) - both on EE, and Lebara - on Vodafone. Only on 1p does Wi-Fi calling work on my FP4. (BTW the network name then becomes “EE Wi-Fi calling”!). My research found very few networks that stated support for Wi-Fi calling with an FP4. I had high hopes of Lebara/ Vodafone, but was disappointed. You may find actual reported experience from user forums more useful than network operator claims (or lack thereof) but a quick search on this forum (fairphone community forum) returns over 50 results for the search term “FP4 Wi-Fi calling“. I hope this will guide you to a network and a deal that works for you!

Regarding 4G/ 5G: this depends on the sim and the network. I need hardly tell you that 4G and especially 5G provision is still patchy, but most SIMs these days support 5G. My experience is that I get 5G support on my FP4 with both 1p and spusu; I don’t know about any other networks.

All the best for finding a good deal that works for you.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my problem is the phone. I expected a modern phone to adhere to the current protocols, systems etc, but I’m finding my Fairphone 4 doesn’t. Which why there are so many issues with mobile networks.

I bought this phone because is comes with the unwanted apps that Samsung and the like force on their buyers. The downside appears to be the problems I’ve got.

I don’t really need Wi-Fi calling. If 4G worked here, I’d be happy, but I cannot get 4G.

I’ve never had much interest in my phone, it only needs to work. I’ve now taken to wandering around and looking at my signal icon. I do have 4G in the area, in fact I it’s available in my back garden, but not in the house. No doubt due to the geography of 500ft hills behind and across the valley.

I’ve had a look at the Ofcom and Mastdata sites and my part of the world is a patchwork of areas where 3G, 4G and 5G all work on each of the 3 mobile companies. It’s a complete mess. I was hoping to see where the local masts are, but Mastdata want payment for that information. There are plans to erect a mast 200 yard away, but that has gone beyond the council planning stage.

So I’m going to leave Spusu and sign up for a month on either BT or Vodafone/Three and see how it goes. If I can get 4G/5G great, if not, I’ll try the other option. If that fails, the Fairphone will be kicked into touch, I’m unlikely to return to this brand - unless I discover there is a problem with the phone, that I’ve created. That might mean selling my soul to Failbook’s tracking and spying.

Hi PenY

While I understand your frustration, please also understand that Fairphone is stuck between a rock and a hard place with regards to VoLTE, VoNR/Vo5G and VoWIFI:

Each of those technologies need to be configured and activated on both the consumer device as well as the carrier -equipment. Thus your phone needs to have a valid and active configuration for every carrier and every carrier needs to have a valid and active configuration for every phone (maybe for every modem instead, couldn’t find any specifics - still a huge amount).

So the only thing you as a consumer can do, is to pressure your current provider to support your device and you’ll need to ask every other provider if they support your device.

I finally received a reply from Spusu Support.

They told me the Fairphone4 is not supported for WiFi Calling as others have said.

Currently I am only able to use 2G & 3G in this area on EE. Despite being told that both of these systems are being turned off within months, Spusu tell me EE expect to keep using them until 2029. I have no idea if that’s typo. Obviously I was hoping to get access the G4 & G5 a lot sooner than that. If I were living 300 yards up the hill, I’d be getting them. I’m in a dip that the EE mast on the opposite of the valley cannot reach.

I have moved to Vodafone (Lebara). I can now get G4 & G5 and WiFi Calling. The call quality was instantly better, all for £2 a month, saving me £3.

Thanks to all of you who replied to my original post.

Thanks for posting your update.

Wow! I’m surprised and pleased for you that WiFi calling works on your FP4 with Lebara - I will try my wife’s Lebara SIM (which gives her WiFi calling on her Pixel 6a) in my FP4 again and see if WiFi calling now works for me. I’m in E. Herts where Lebara (Vodafone) has 4G and some 5G service, but not 5G where we live.

I’m glad that you have 4G and 5G data on your FP4 in your area with Lebara. Result!

I’d be interested to know if you have installed the A15 update on your FP4, and which Lebara deal you are on and whether you signed up via Money Saving Expert (which I highly recommend, by the way). Thanks!
