There’s only one way to find out. But if everyone has done their job properly, including the network operator, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t.
I have the same issue. I went to a Mobile Zone shop and they told me that switching to an eSIM requires an SMS, but since I don’t have connection I can’t receive any
I’ll go to a Yallo shop later to change my SIM and tell them that this is a generalised problem for anyone who has a Fairphone 6, so that they can report it to the headquarters and maybe find a solution for everyone. Especially for the the people like me who don’t live in a city where there is a Yallo shop ![]()
I’ll be going to a yallo shop in Geneva tomorrow, I’ll report how it went. Fingers crossed!
Update: I’ve just been to a Yallo shop in Biel and they replaced the SIM card. Now it works again (but I had to pay for the replacement
). The guy at the shop believes the problem were the scratches on the card and said that some devices are very sensitive to them. I told him that I tried the SIM in another phone and it worked and that multiple people were having the same issue at the same time. He said that he will report the issue to Yallo. Anyway, it seems that if you replace the SIM it works again (for now).
Update: great news! I’ve been to a Yallo shop in Geneva, near La Placette. The lady there was very nice and immediately recognized the phone model, another customer was there earlier this morning and had the same problem with the same phone model (FP6). The shop clerk got me a new SIM card. Everything works now, I’ve kept my phone number too.
I also had problems with my F6 after a vacation in Marokko. There was no connection wen I went outsider my house. I thougt it was because of the synchronisation with Murena Workspace and overwriting de data storage. I also saw a diferend acces point name. The APN was the same as before. After my vacation I intsalled a lot of updates. I also used an e-sim in Marokko. Now I read about the problems after the updates it could be the cause of my disturbing F6.
My provider is KPN in the Netherlands. They change an older Sim card for free.
Such problems can have many different root causes and the topic here is very specific to 1 network in switzerland, and not related to an OS update. So did you get a new SIM that solved it?
The new SIM solve the issue. But the root cause is not clear. Is it the recent FP6 OS update (done this weekend and the issue happened 1-2 days after), or the shut down of 3G on the network that is starting these days…
Also it’s not clear if it’s specific to Yallo or also to Sunrise. Yallo is a low cost seller based on Sunrise network, in Switzerland.
It is clearly connected to the update. Friend with the same phone on same network didn’t have any issues until they upgraded the Android a couple of days later.
Another clue: My sim works fine on my old fairphone 4 but not on 6. I haven’t updated my fairphone 4 for a while now.
Ok. I’ll try to report it to the official FP support.
Switching to eSim seems to be the easiest way to resolve the issue.
Hey, I had the some problem with my yallo SIM-Card und Fairphone 6. In my case I can say, that the problem appears before the update, because I was in train as my SIM-Card failed. Because of this I checked if there could be a Fairphone update. As I shaw, that it was one, I started the update as soon I had WLAN. Unfortunatly the SIM-Card problem was not bether after. I called yallo a few times and they said, that they cannot give me a new SIM-Card because I will change to another network at the end of the month. So I have to use another handy till I can change ![]()
Hello and welcome to the forum
Would you consider getting a eSIM as a temporary solution?
I am not saying it’s fair to expect a user to jump through the loops like that, but perhaps it is easier than using another device.
Same issue happened to me and my fiance around 6th June on both of our Iphone 15 Pro’s, so it seems to impact more devices with Yallo.
Only solution was to use another phone and then switched to Esim. If you call Yallo, they claim they are not aware of any wide issues, but this is clearly a problem created by them.
They wanted to charge me 40 franks for the Esim switch, but luckily when I loggen in to the application, it was free of charge, but was buggy and took ~ 10 attempts with a 1-day delay for it to be activated, but finally all seems to work well again.
Seems to be a good way to sell new SIM cards…if there is any institution following up on such company approaches, maybe its worth to file a report about Yallo (in Germany we have the Verbraucherzentrale)
I asked for a eSIM, but they said it is not possible, because I have resigned with yallo. The won’t change anything when the contract is resigned.
Facing the same issue on FP6 with Android 16 (latest update), with a ~2 year old SIM. However, the issue occured only when I came back from France last wednesday. I had proper roaming network connectivity, but network just died once back in CH. I did reset/restart everything I could (restart phone, airplane mode, reset mobile network config, disable/enable SIM, physically remove/insert, etc..) and cannot reset/update APN settings, as they won’t save.
Also cannot try and select a network manually, as the Settings interface will fail when disabling auto select (screen goes to the “list” view, then comes back to the previous screen - on first attempt after an OS restart, a message saying that the Settings app has crashed shows up).
SIM works fine on an older up-to-date FP3, so this is more likely either an Android 16+FP6 hardware or some hardware+carrier/provider combo issue. Google search + its AI tend to rather say that the issue comes from APN settings loss, and that it’s a common issue when updating to Android 16.
Timing-wise, I installed the latest Android 16 FP security update while on roaming, and network connection issues only occured once I was back in “local/CH”.
Interestingly, I should note that the support request I opened with Fairphone, for my FP6 that is under warranty (less than 1y old), with an abundance of details on the encountered issue (+ various secondary side-effects) and troubleshooting attempts, is about to be 2 weeks old, and hasn’t been granted any kind of feedback yet.
This is raising concerns.
Did you use the repaur portal or any general request? For actual you best use the repair portal
And did you contact the provider and is it a Sunrise network/Yallo as discussed here in the topic? Did you try another SIM from a different provier?
Just because a SIM works on another phone does not mean its not faulty.
Hi yvmuell,
Thanks for chiming in.
I opened a request on https://support.fairphone.com (in the “I have a problem related to a software update” category), as the diagnose and repair was leading me to steps for returning faulty fairphone hardware, which was unlikely and has ideed shown not to be the case.
I went to a Yallo shop and had my SIM changed, which helped work around the issue. Obviously, there appears to have been some Yallo-specific settings in the old SIM that makes software or hardware components of the FP6 stumble or crash following 3G deactivation by Yallo/Sunrise. Case in point, my FP6 had no issues in France, where 3G will remain alive till the end of 2028.
Also, just because a SIM doesn’t work on another phone does not mean it’s not functional. But it’s highly probable it is (see what I did there ? ![]()
Ockam’s razor would further argue that it’s more likely that we’re facing a settings/software/hardware issue combo in the context of 3G decommissioning than having dozens of SIM cards from varying ages dying in a specific timeframe, in a specific country, for a specific smartphone and a specific provider (along with having the SIM resuscitate when put in a different phone).
Of course, I’d gladly reevaluate the above if troubleshooting/investigative details came to shine a different light. We’ll see if that ticket ever gets to blossom beyond it’s “Open” status !
In the meantime, concerns will remain arisen.
