Quickstep is chewing through my battery on my new FP5

The quickstep application on my FP5 is using between 25-35% of my battery every day ever since the last FP5 update. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this? I tried deleting it but then access to Apps disappeared so I reinstalled it but that did not help with the battery issue. Thanks for any ideas. Ready to soon give up the phone altogether as it does not last even 1 day…

Hi, Quickstep is the default launcher, and it seems to use quite a lot power. You can try another launcher, eg. Nova Launcher. Simply install it from the play store, and define it to be your default launcher.

Hello, Thank. you very much. Once I have installed Nova launcher and made that the default launcher can I delete quickstep?

HI @MGW

Welkom to the Fairphone Community Forum

That’s not possible, the phone will not allow you to remove the Quickstap launcher.

And i will not recement it if you somehow bypast that. it happend to me, the launcher I’m using dit go bad after a google update (that bug was repaired later by the maker of the launcher). if it was not possible to start Quickstap again on that moment I couldn’t have used my phone that week anymore.

I hope I’m not scarring people now for using different launchers, indeed i will recement doing so, i don’t like Quickstap at all.

I hope you enjoy your new launcher!

Tom

Ps. for how interested my favorite Launcher is now OLauncher made by Digital Minimalism.

Btw: event if using different launcher (i use Nova) Quickstep is still used for Recent apps switching

Does the bug where app switcher broke when using a third party launcher got fixed? I stopped using Nova because of that bug.

Hello,

What do you mean by “Quickstep is still used for Recent apps switching”? I did not quite understand that.

I think it is actually possible to delete Quickstep - the question is whether the phone will still work using another launcher in Quickstep’s place? If Quickstep stays on the phone, is it still running in the background?

Thank you.

Margaret

I am starting to experience this, badly. Switching apps with gestures is basically useless now. The “close all” button does not work anymore. It’s showing no apps or apps that aren’t even open and open apps are missing. Used to work fine for me all this time with Nova and before that Microsoft Launcher. Started like a couple weeks ago.

To get back to the OT of the OP, Quickstep does seem to have a problem on the FP4 too, since the latest OS (not security!) update.

AFAIK it doesn’t happen to everybody, but on my FP4 Quickstep is by far the biggest battery eater–but not all the time! Even after a couple months I haven’t managed to spot what triggers it. Definitely not something I do (settings, usage or some such), it must be something the OS does. It happens usually at night, but not always (WiFi/Bluetooth off, fairly good cell reception on my bedside table, or at least always the same).

Something is wrong with Quickstep indeed, but unfortunately the problem is very random.

Just for the record. :man_shrugging:

This is provided by Quickstep independently if you use 3rd launcher, so if you “violently” delete Quickstep, then Recent Apps sure stop working

I use Nova Launcher on FP5 from start (492 days  and not having problem except this one which can be fixed disabling DesktopMode
