Phone dies during charging

Hi, ive been using my new Fairphone 5 for a few months now, initially with the stock os and then moving to /e/os.
There is an odd problem that has happened twice now, first on stock os and today again on /e/os.

Basicaly i always charge the phone overnight. twice now i woke up to my phone dead and it would not turn on, while this is happening, the alarm does not trigger. I have to re-insert the battery and then i can turn my phone back on and when i do its charge is about 98-100% so it does charge but for some reason dies sometime at night/early morning.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? im using my old Note 10’s charger which i never had any issues with before.

The worst thing is that my alarm does not go off when this happenes, which means i could wake up late and miss work, don’t want that to happen

Hi @Adam_Weiler,

Welcome to the Fairphone community form,
sorry to hear you experience problems with your alarm klok on your Fairphone 5.

i can’t remember i had a similar issue on my phone.
i do use my phone as a alarm klok.

you already pointet on your charger, i think this is a good guess, i will recommend to use a new/recent made charger. older models are not always fully compatible with the Fairphone 5 and a defect in the charger/cable is possible cause.

i will recommend to use the original charger for your phone, that will rule out all possible compatiblety issues.

if you normally have more than 40 % left in your battery before you change it again. my consider switching on the battery protection mode in the settings → battery → do not change battery above 80% to increase the lifetime of your battery (I say this because you indicate that you leave your phone in the charger for a long time, this should not make a difference on the issue you experience. please let us know if it did)

That almost completely rules out a software problem in your FP5 as a possible causes.

interesting, when it happens agan, can you make sure there is no way to wake up the phone whiteout removing the battery?
i should turn on when long holding the power button. (it can take more than 20 seconds)
if not try the volume down button (more than 30 seconds), to force a complete shutdown of the FP5.
and than the power button again to turn it on.

please share here in all possible detail wat happened during and after pushing the buttons.

a different Guess:

(wat is unlikely after you reinstalled your OS (did u use a Backup to bring back your settings? than its still possible ther is s defect in te software wat was transferred in the Backup file.)

it can be the Klok app that caused the problem.

have you ever experienced the problem before the alarm should sound

you can try to Reset the Klok app, please aware that you will lose all settings and alarms within the app.

Go to,

Settings-> apps-> all apps-> Klok → klik on remove data and klik on remove Cache.

Restart your phone, and let it update all apps (possible in the app store) and firmware (in the Settings).

Restart again.

now you can set op your alarm klok again.

Greetings

Tom

Hey @T4om ,

Thank you for your reply and suggestions on the troubleshooting.

Since I last posted, I had it happen again. This time I followed your suggestion and you are correct, I held the power button much longer and the phone turned on without needing to remove the battery.

I also did some thinking and it is possible I already had /e/os installed when it first happened, but just in case I changed the old cable on the charger that came with my previous phone (samsung galaxy note10). If it happens again I’ll try replacing the charger as well, so far it has been 37 days since the last time I had the issue, there has also been some /e/os updates since then so if it was a software problem, it might be fixed now.

I can’t seem to find this setting on /e/os version 2.8-a14-20250221470208-community-FP5.
There are some new updates available but I’ll wait till the weekend to update, in case something goes wrong, so I have time to fix it.

When I switched to /e/os I went with a clean install and used no backups, took a bit longer to get all the apps I wanted to transfer but I thought it would be best since I was moving off of Samsungs ecosystem.

As for the alarm clock, I use a third party app. When the issue happened again last time, I woke up naturally before the alarm would go off so I’m assuming the app isn’t an issue.

I will continue to pay attention to anything that might have caused this issue and post if it happens again.

I experienced something similar with the FP4. I started having problems using a cable and charger from my old phone. I found that using slow charging (like plugging into a computer or car) solved my problem, as did a new, next-gen charger.

Hi everyone, I’m experiencing a similar issue.

I usually charge my smartphone overnight and use it as an alarm clock. Most of the time, this works fine.
However, more and more often I wake up—sometimes way too late—and my phone is simply turned off. When I turn it back on, it shows 100% battery.

It doesn’t happen every night, but it feels like it’s becoming more frequent, and I have no idea why or what is causing it.

This is still happening a lot and there is no fix. I have no idea why this is happening, as there is no error message. The phone simply restarts or shuts off completely, always at around 80%. I’m going to use a different charging cable and power adapter without Quick Charge. Could it be that the phone is getting too hot and is shutting itself off for safety reasons? However, I didn’t notice that it would be hot when this happened..

My device also experiences these frequent crashes with restarts during charging. This has been happening since the update to A15. I have tried numerous cables and chargers. The only thing that helps is disabling fast charging. We have a second FP5 on A14. It works perfectly. We will definitely not be updating to A15.

Just wanted to share that getting a new charger seems to have fixed the issue, haven’t had my phone shut down over night since the last time. I just got a generic 30W charger with cable included.
