No audio output from the phone

I’m suddenly getting sound output from neither the earpiece nor the speaker. This applies to everything: calls, media, alarms, notifications. Nothing makes sound through the phone’s own audio devices. I think these are two different speakers (right?), which suggests that the problem is in the software rather than the hardware? It would be strange if both broke at once and nothing else?

However, if I connect the phone with an audio device, say my earphones or an external loud speaker, I get the sound output normally throught them. Which may suggest that the problem is weirdly with the material speaker parts?

So, what the heck? Has anyone else encountered this problem and is there a solution to it? I’d hate to send my phone back to the factory if I just could repair this otherwise.

Hello
Could you run some internal troubleshooting? Perhaps aided by self-repair portal?

Hi. I actually went through the diagnose issue on fairphone website. It suggested checking that I’m not using wi-fi or 4g for calls, and I tried that. It didn’t help. Which was to be expected, since the problem isn’t only with calls, but with all audio. The next step was to send the phone back to factory for repair. I’m just wondering if there’s something more I could do myself instead of factory resetting my phone and forfeiting it for a few weeks.

How about this test?

Do you mean literally a few seconds, or is it an euphemism for a longer time such as half an hour, hour? I’ve waited a good while, approaching that half an hour mark, and nothing happens.

If that’s unexpected, I wonder if there’s a software issue causing it? My fairphone 4 is updated to the latest Android 15. Could that make this command not function?

In fact, that update is very recent, which makes me wonder if it caused the speaker and earpiece to die in the first place? I don’t tend to use the phone’s own audio devices much, as I’m always on earphones, and I’m not sure if this isn’t the first time I tried them after the Android 15 update.

Did you reboot without earphones attached?
Did you try safe mode? dic:safemode

Did you check all sound and accesibility settings also reg hearing aids?

The internal tests are currently not working on the FP4

Apologies, I had no intention of wasting your time.
Apparently there is a bug with the internal testing for FP4 (it definitely should take a few seconds max).

You could try checking support and testing section via MyFairphone App, perhaps audio is there included (it is for FP5)

No worries, and thanks, I hadn’t even taken look at this app. Well, my phone failed both tests.

Thanks!

I had read about this hearing aid idea and had checked that. That said, I hadn’t tried to restart my phone without the earphones attached. And that did it.

If this was the first time that I needed to hear the rebooting advice to try it, I wouldn’t feel so damn stupid now. Alas, it isn’t. I’m an idiot.

Issue solved. Thank you! And thank you both for the help. I guess this thread can be closed now.

Dont be so harsh with yourself.

It seems the phone might still “think” earphones are attached after removing them, which still should not be the case I guess
