Navigation bar - "recently opened applications" (square icon) suddenly stops working (Fairphone 5, Android 14)

Hi,

since updating to Android 14, I’ve noticed a strange thing on my Fairphone 5. After some days of use the button for the “recently opened applications” (the square icon in the navigation bar) suddenly stops working: You can press on the square icon, but nothing happens. It only works again after restarting the smartphone. The phenomenon is reproducible, but I am not yet sure after what exact time the button suddenly stops working; after the restart, it takes a few days for the function to stop. - I use a Fairphone 5 with Android 14 and the latest updates for OS and apps. And I use the Nova Launcher. Anyone with the same problem?

Lovely greetings

Robert

Undermentioned is a demonstration screencast:

When I press the recent activities button, logcat records the undermentioned logs:

09-07 01:38:50.461 I/vol.VolumeDialogImpl( 2575): mDialog.dismiss() reason: volume_controller from: com.android.systemui.volume.VolumeDialogImpl$7.onDismissRequested:3
09-07 01:38:50.461 D/vol.VolumeDialogImpl( 2575): dismissH: skipping dismiss because isAnimatingDismiss is true and showingStateInconsistent is false

However, I don’t see anything of note in there, although it interests me that the logs reference volume.

It’s not listed in ✏ Known reproducible and reported issues of the Fairphone 5 yet, despite it affecting my brother and I constantly for almost a year.

Does this happen in safe mode as well? Do you use any cammon app that’s in the recent activities? I have seen buggy apps break the recent apps overview. But not like this. I use the gestures to open the recents.

Very loosely related issue (also with recents pane, but with gestures) - maybe try the fix from here - Latest update broke multitasking pane - #28 by k3dAR ?

Merged your post, can you confirm if you use another Launcher or not?

@yvmuell, I do. I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=bitpit.launcher. However, my brother used to experience it despite using the OEM (AOSP-derived) Launcher3, and continues to on https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher&pcampaignid=web_share.

@UPPERCASE, I’ve not used Safe Mode for long enough to ascertain it, since I don’t know how to reproduce it. Safe Mode reverts too many configurations to be used willy-nilly, if at all.

However all not stock launcher

@yvmuell, what do you mean by that?

Quickstep is the FPOS stock launcher and all listed above are third party launcher and the issues mainly hit those not using stock launcher.

Edit or did you mean Quickstep by this?

Yes, @yvmuell. com.android.launcher3 has its name set as “Quickstep” in its manifest. See the undermentioned:

  2. Revision - Stack Overflow

    QuickStep launcher (com.android.launcher3)

  3. Is it Stock Android 13 ? - Android Community

Launcher3 is the default launcher as far as I know. Quickstep is probably the codename for some of its functionality such as recent app switching and whatnot.

Ok, in the forum its commonly called Quickstep as this is the App name
