This is my first post on this forum and frankly I AM FED UP with my FP4. You know the issue when most users were forced to switch off the 4G/VoLTE and WiFi calling so that you could know who’s calling you instead of getting an “unknown number” from everybody? Well I’ve had to too, and I’ve made my peace with settling for a lower audio quality.
BUT since last friday, my phone does not take any calls or allows me to call anybody, except if I enable either the 4G or WiFI calling. But guess what? If I do so, I don’t know who’s calling. This is not an issue if I’m able to take the call. But if I can’t - I can’t call back as I don’t know who called me.
So I’m stuck with two options:
either not receiving any calls and then getting a meesage that smbd tried to reach me
or receiveing all the calls but never knowing who called and not having the option to call back
Both of these options are far from good. I’ve already submitted the support ticket but knowing their response time, I will be stuck with this issue for a while. And as you can probably tell, it’s a real pain in the you-know-what. So, I was hoping that maybe some of you were able to find or could think of a solution for that?
I’ve already tried resetting the network options, restarting the phone, reinstalling the SIM card. My phone is running on the latest update, but the issues started out of the blue last week, not right after the update. Fun fact - my husband, who also has a FP4 has the exact same issue, which started almost the same time as mine.
Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated!
welcome to the forum!
To me it seems as if your provider switched off the 2G and / or 3G network, so that there is no other possibility than using VoLTE or WIFI calling. But maybe the trick that was posted in
could also help in your case, at least temporarily ?
Thanks for your reply. I looked into this and it appears you’re right - I did find an annoucement from my provider that he will be turning off 3G second half of 2025 - it appears that it just reached my region.
So I am stuck with 4G or WiFi calling - which would be perfect if it gave me the caller ID instead of unknown number.
As for the solution from the post - if I turn off 4G calling, I can’t call or accept calls at all, so that’s no good. I tried toggling with that and with WiFi, but no fix there. Sadly
As an update to this, today my phone got updated to Android 15. Sadly, the issue persists
The phone works well with a SIM from a different provider, so it’s definately an issue between my provider (polish Play) and Fairphone compatibility. I’ve replaced my SIM card, and had a new one reconfigured by my provider but it didn’t help.
Fairphone suggests sending the phone to them, but I don’t have a spare, so it hardly is an option. My husband did a factory reset on his (he’s having the same issue) but nothing changed. I’ve also submitted a service request to my provider and waiting for the update.
Any ideas what else could be done in the meantime would be greatly appreciated.
Hey, glad I’m not the only one here with the same issue!
I’m also with Play and I replaced my SIM card as well, which I initially thought fixed the issue, because for a couple of days afterwards I could see the caller ID. But not anymore.
At this point I’m tempted to just change the provider, because otherwise I’m pretty happy with my FP4.
Hi, unfortunately it is a well known issue with Play (but also some other network providers in different countries) so I am a bit surprised the support wanted to check the phone.
Anyway if you check the forum for Play or any other provider using Play, it seems to be just that, unknown callers. From what I heard: plus, T-Mobile and orange work fine.
I don’t know if we could exert enough pressure on either FP or Plus to amend the situation.
Thanks for the reply. As a reply to this and the comment by @otrenaer, I just got a reply from Play to my official technical request. They basically said that it’s the producer’s duty to reach out to the local provider to tell them how the phone should be configured to work. I asked if they can’t reach out themselves if it’s a known issue, but they responded that they’re not willing to.
So, basically, no hope for it to start working unless Fairphone company reaches out to Play.
Do you happen to know which provider works best in Poland? My Orange SIM card works, I’m tempted to try Plus. But the Play’s technical support told me that based on his research, this varies from SIM to SIM - meaning that one SIM from a given provider will work, and the other won’t. I’m not sure if I trust that opinion. What do you guys think?
If anyone has a provider that works well with their Fairphone in Poland, I’d be much obliged to hear from you!
Edited to say. That is by no means any discouragement to put pressure on FP and Play, but judging from the fact that Play is not listed as an officially supported network plus there were other cases in different countries, I would not expect much.
This in general is in my eyes nonsense… It might be that any MVNO has problems the MNO does not have, and this can be device dependent, however I dont think this is SIM dependent, unless a SIM is faulty.
Yeah, that’s what I think as well - that it’s a mean to disencourage me from switching - sort of saying “you might switch, but it still might not work”. My guess, it’s worth trying eitherway, cause Play won’t work and they’re not willing to do anything about it.
