I have a Fairbuds XL headset for just over a year now. In the past couple of months the ear cups have started smelling a bit rank, perhaps owing to the fact that I use it almost every day and usually for about four to six hours per session.
I’d like to get rid of this smell. I have considered using a foot odour remover, but I don’t really like the smell of it and I fear it will make me smell bad if I wear my headset after using it.
Another possibility that I’ve thought of is to wipe or bathe the ear pieces in IPA (just the detachable parts with the foam and mesh) but I’m not sure if the materials used are compatible. IPA really smells bad as well, although it can be neutralised by rinsing with water afterwards.
I’d like to know if anyone has any suggestions which might work without being foul smelling and which don’t damage the headset.
So the solution is to take the cushion off and to then then dip a paper towel in some IPA, just enough to have it not drip. You then wipe the mesh on both sides, so that the mesh is thoroughly impregnated with the IPA, and the inside of the cup with as well. You then wait about half a minute. This way the earwax has some time to dissolve. Once that time has passed, you wipe it all with the same paper towel a second wipe, which will remove the earwax. I use one towel per earcup. After cleaning it has to be left to dry for about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on environment temperature and saturation levels. The IPA does not damage the materials of the earcups.
Ah there we differ. The stuff they call IPA in Europe, not good I agree. You have to go to England to get proper IPA … I’ll leave it there, as we’re getting off topic
