GPS Problems after Android 15 Update

,

Hi @all,

i have the Android 15 update installed on my Fairphone 5. After some days running without a reboot i get GPS connection problems when i try to start a new navigation session via google maps. I haven’t tried other GPS apps yet but i assume it doesn’t has something todo with maps.

When i reboot the FP everything works for the next few days until the next reboot is necessary.

Has anyone the same issue or an idea how to fix this?

Thanks in advance & kind regards,

piccolo

I’ve had similar problems, and haven’t found a proper fix yet. I have found that a very old workaround does work for me, though. Using the “GPS Status” or “GPS Test” apps from the play store, clearing the AGPS cache will fairly immediately resolve my problems, at least for a while. I’ve not found an easier way to trigger that cache deletion, unfortunately.

Hi rascalking,

thanks for your reply. I tried both apps an deleted the cache but sadly no success on my phone.

The only way to get it going again is to reboot the whole phone and wait a little. That’s really anoing.

The FP5 also gets really hot when using android auto and google maps. And sometimes bluetooth disconnects from the car so that I cannot answer phone calls via android auto.

I’m thankful for any ideas on this because i’m sitting in the car nearly every day and need a working phone…

Thanks and regards,

piccolo

Hi
What if you rebooted more often, just for testing now?

Hi Meaghan,

thanks for your reply! As a workaround i’ve got to do this because otherwise i can’t use android auto and it’s functions properly.

But i hope that this issue will be fixed soon especially that the phone is getting very hot.

Thanks and regards,

piccolo

To increase the probability that there be a fix eventually I’d recommend you contactsupport if you haven’t done that already. If they are not aware, a fix will probably not come…

I’m having the same problem

Same behaviour for me. Let’s raus support tickets to get this fixed.

I am wondering why not every FP5 user is affected? Maybe it is a combination of factors. Anyone has developer mode activated or used in the past in order to fake gps positions?

Well, I wrote a support ticket, which was a three week long ordeal of generic troubleshooting requests I should perform and in the end, I was told that I am the only one with this issue an thus they ran out of ideas. Let me tell you that I have the extended warranty until 2028. I am totally disappointed and will tell everyone not to by a fairphone if they want a reliable phone.

In the past, I owned FP3 which was kind of software-bricked by not supporting the fingerprint sensor anymore. Now I have FP5 with GPS only working for an hour after reboot. Great!

Same here, somehow:

FP5 with Murena Os here and now for the first time trying GPS and it is not there.

I don´t get it - I know that fairphones are quite popular, so we are not alone:

probably many fairphone5 owners out there who have problems with GPS, too.

Why is there obviously no ongoing work and though progress like there is normally with open source software, I am getting really disappointed, this all smells fishy.

Did you check the time in the GPSTest App?

The FP4 had more wide spread issues in the past, however the FP5 so far not.

GPS Test App shows the exact right time here.

GPTS Test App didn´t complain about anything and it seems that the Test App is confirming a working GPS module here in my FP5.

We will see if the next 1.8 gigabyte big upgrade will automagically fix the problem

Did you try to force an update of the a-gps data?

No I did not try that, and I am reading and hearing about that now for the first time.

In Windows world, software can crash, in the opensource and Linux world, even a software with a 0.5 version number is more stable then most of the “stable” windows software.

I used many smartphones and I do have some experience with ADB, lineage OS, heimdall and so on…

First time, I am not satisfied with a Smartphone - sadly, it is the Fairphone, I am so dissapointed about.

I will wait, and maybe the next huge non-atomic Update/Upgrade will automagically fix the issue.

If not, I will have to sell my Fairphone soon and buy a shiift phone.

Deleted the cache of maps and other apps and still the same situation.

Did you check with Murena? Or did you check if any privacy settings interfere ?

No I did not check with Murena, why should I?

I bought a Fairphone that is not working as advertised and I am coming here and I am seeing others with the same problem.

So why should I ask Murena, now?

Normal workflow and normal bug handling would be a github account where all the development and also all the bugtracking takes place.

but i am not seeing that at all, I am not seeing any open source development.

Maybe I am blinded by the light and I will find open source development of the Fairphone’s software soon.

I know open source software development andthis doesn’t look like opensource at all.

And I wouldn´t be suprised if most of those not helpfull comments like ask Murena or delete cache is coming from bots, chat bots, ai agents…you know what I mean.

Hello.
I understand you are a new member and do not know us very well yet  welcome and I hope you will enjoy your time here.

Please let me assure you we are not bots, chat bots, ai agents or alike:)

I am using stock FP OS on FP5 - have no issues whatsover with GPS, so I am not usually commenting stuff on other ROMs. But perhaps there is a misunderstanding here - e/OS software is provided by Murena so why Fairphone would be responsible for sorting it out? Plus - to the best of my knowledge - the GPS issues on FP5 are not common, hence the questions about your settings.

Edited to add that there is this thread on GPS issues on some apps, please let me know if that was relevant to your case

Because your running their ROM?

My experience independant from the used ROM and from the used hardware is, that GPS problems very often occur after larger updates.
So, do you get a fix at all? Or is the TTFF far too long?
In both such cases it could help to use the “APGS” - “Clear and Update” function in the menu of the GPS Test app (I am not sure which one you are using, BTW. I am talking about this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstestplus with or without “Plus”).

Thanks for the info.

As you can see, the problem comes up with the “Fairphone OS” and also with Murena Os, which would be a first sign, that it is not a software problem but a hardware issue.

I bought a Fairphone, this is fairphone forume, so again, why would I ask murena.

Do you know what Murena would tell ? Probably the same like you did, just vice versa:

go to Fairphone, you have a fairphone, so go there.

i tried the gpstest app you mentioned but I deleted the cache in the system settings not in the setting of the gps test app.

I will let you know, when the issue is solved. thank you.

thank you, all.

Problem solved and you guys were right - the solution was easy:

just turning off hiding location is the fix, here.

Thanks a lot.
