FP6 case to use with Quadlock

Hi, I recently bought again a Fairphone (the 6), after a while ago haveing owned a FP1 and a FP2, but moved to other brands due to lasting porblems with these older models (without dissing them). So now I have thia FP 6 with the “official” FP6 case, but I ran into following problem: I can’t seem to find a case on which I can glue the quadlock universal fit (Universal - Universal Adaptors - Quad Lock® Europe - Official Store), so I can use my Fairphone while driving my bike. Main reason: the FP6 xase has a big hole in the back. Don’t take this as some commercial endorsement, problem is i have the quadlock base on my bike since more than a year and i’m dying to get my FP6 usable on it. I’ve seen 3D prints but they all use TPU which seems not to be right material for this universal quadlock adapter. Materials they say are good: Plastics such as PC, ABS, PVC, Nylon, Acrylic.

Someone has ideas or recommendations for me?

Check out the thread about 3d printed cases her:

Currently there’s only feedback on TPU cases. But I know from @Janse.0815 that he’s planning to print a case from PETG, which should also satisfy your request for mechanical strength, he coukd give you feedback about a “hard” case in a few days/weeks.
I’ve been in intense private conversation with him about printing in TPU and PETG.

Thanks a lot. I’ll look into that and wil try to get in touch with the person you mentioned.

I informed him already by “calling” his name. I think he will be so friendly to give some feedback here. Just give him some days, it’s holiday time for most people.

I’m retired. Time is no problem

The case should arrive by the end of the week, and I will share a picture then

I bought a simple FP6 case at knaldeals.com. you could check whether this one can be used with Quadlock.

Thanks a lot. I’m curious, because the only one with a photo is TPU-material so not suited for quadlock glue, and for the others I don’t see the material used.

The Gen 6’s modular back seems like a great opportunity to partner with Quadlock and launch an official mount for Fairphone.

Quadlock is so much better than anything else I’ve tried before, and I use it every day, so I can’t even buy a Fairphone until it supports Quadlock.

Since the modular back has to be changed using screws, I’m not sure. Thought about it though, but unscrewing/screwing backs for different occasion isn’t practical

You can buy non official cases as well which dont have the cut out. Try to avoid silicone cases tho, as glueing anything to silicone is very difficult. TPU and 3M VHB LSE should do reallly well!

Overall, I am disappointed that the official cases all have a cut out and are so frigging expensive. I know fair manufacturing and all, but 10x the price for a case with a large hole inside is a bit too much.

Imo, a plain transparent case to protect you phone and a (preinstalled) screen protector should come with the phone. These are must haves to actually prolong a phones life and thus protect the environment!

Thanks a lot, and I agree about your remark on the cost of cases with this rather unnecessary cutout (when I would need to open the phone I’d remove the case anyway). I’m still not sure about TPU, given quadlock’s explicit mention that the used 3M VHB adhesive won’t bond. I wouldn’t like to suddenly phone drop when riding my bike.

hey All

Forgive me if that is unnecessary intrusion and I did ponder whether to post it at all;-)

The thing is when cycling, I would never use the FP6 (or FP5 I have) without an extra (weather) protection. It is after all an IP55 device. There has been a thread on FP5 cases where we shared several solutions (including my pics of weatherproof protection), I also remember people complaining about their phones got wet when used outdoors.

Feel free to ignore this comment

Check out the LSE variant of VHB: 3M™ VHB™ Tape LSE-060WF | 3M United States

“FOR DIFFICULT SURFACES: Bonds well to low surface energy substrates, such as polypropylene (PP), thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), and thermoplastic olefins (TPO)”

(TPU is part of the TPE family)

@Meaghan i have a separate case strapped to my bike to store the phone in in case of rain. I never owned a waterproof phone, so I am already prepared :+1: but yeah, good heads up for those cycling through thunderstorms

No problem at all @Meaghan. I only cycle when it’s shiny weather (so not a lot here in Belgium, except these days)

I’ll look into that.

Hi @Ceremony Problem is that the quadlock comes with the tape already attached. Or do you think I should try anyway (supposingly when I will have a case without the back cutout).

Quadlock comes with VHB (dark grey color) tape. VHB LSE (white color) is not the same and is more suited to adhere to TPU than regular VHB.

Whether it is strong enough, I dunno, but probably the best option.

I guess I’ll wait until a bigger choice of FP6 cases become available. In the meantime I use elastic to keep my FP6 phone in the older case with Quadlock glued from my previous Samsung phone. Thanks to everybody for your responses.

Tried the VHB LSE with the Mous intralock mounting hardware on a smooth black TPU: held up really well, tho I dont do crazy downhill tracks or jumps, just some trekking.

Before I glued it to my TPU case of choice, I tried a few other case materials: a rather grippy/rough to the touch TPU case beformed badly and the VHB LSE wasn’t really adhering to it propperly. Two perfectly smooth transparent silicone cases did as much adhering as a post it note. Awful. Never ever use a silicone case for this!

I finally settled on a rather smooth black tpu case. Adhered very well so far and I suspect that the case itself would lose my phone before the mount/vhb would give away…

I did a bumpy ride lately (not by choice, the bike roadmap said it was gravel, but instead it was kilometers long road with sharp stones almost fistlike big) and my back red reflector fell off. I had a crazy discussion about bolts and screwswith the so-called AI bot of the Fairphone helpdesk which of course didn’t get me anywhere.

Since the Quadlock is VHB and not VHB LSE I’m not sure I will take the risk.

Last remark: is putting a VHB LSE tape between my VHB quadlock and a TPU case a good idea (just asking, nothing decided yet)
