FP5 not booting after update to Android 15

I’d also like to share about having the the same issue. I also have a non-functional fingerprint reader (with a support ticket that FP have been been ignoring since April).

I had the experience of it once booting into A15. Initially, I had the common issue, of being stuck at the “I”, and I tried repeatedly rebooting. After a few tries and waiting a longish time at the boot screen, it did boot. Not into some rolled back A14, however, but actually into the updated version. I used the phone throughout the day, but noticed it had turned itself off/crashed some time in the afternoon.

Since then, I’ve not been able to get it to boot. The repeated reboot suggestion does nothing. The safe mode suggestion doesn’t work (followed this guide, which says to hold down volume down during the boot sequence. However, if I keep holding it, the phone shuts down during the boot. What’s up with that?). Would really like the hear FP chime in on this, since pushing a bricking update OTA is a pretty serious issue.

Same issue with the update:

  • Finger print sensor is not working,
  • Android 15 update failed (stuck in the green screen with the “I” in the middle)
  • Resets to Android 14 after 7 restarts

Thanks for sharing your experiences and solutions.

Have a fair phone 5 with a broken fingerprint scanner which stopped working around mid June.

To add I experienced a successful upgrade to Android 15, with the option to unlock with fingerprint appearing but no response when trying to add the fingerprint in the security page.

Tried rebooting this evening and got the bootloop, didn’t count how many but reverted back to Android 14 after accessing the bootloader menu

Yes, my sensor wasn’t working for a while and I was extending my support ticket till a moment in the near future when I would have some time on my hand to backup and sent it to Fairphone for repairs.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it right away.

Tried it, but unfortunately didn’t work

Keep us updated! Wanna know if it helps or not!

Thanks for the summary, next to my name you can also put yes for fingerprint issues before the upgrade (fingerprint stopped working a long time ago when I upgraded to android 14)

Hi,
I tried it but it also didn’t work. I needed to go back to reboot seven times. It rebooted then with Android 14.

My fingerprint sensor also stopped working months ago.

Hi,

I have the same issues with my FP5 (Fingerprint Sensor also NOT working since months):

  • Android 15 Update hangs after reboot displaying the “I” (phone becomes hot - nothing happens even after 45 minutes waiting).
  • After seven hard resets (battery off or at least 10-15sec pressing power button) successful fallback to Android 14.

I tried for testing a second update to Android 15 - but run in the same issue aging (rollback to Android 14 was again successfully after seven restarts).

Because I didn’t uses the fingerprint sensors, no request to the FairPhone Support done on my side.

Chris

Thank you very much for collating this table. I have added the information about fingerprint issues to @alexii93 case based on this post

Hi! Will the 7 reset wipe any data?
I had the fingerprint sensor issue and a ticket open to fp support. They replied with the generic steps which I followed.
After that asked purchase data.
I noticed the update and tried it out incase it fixes the sensor problem but now instead of sensor issues I have a brick..

Thanks! Today I got the notification about the availability of the update, and it went through smoothly. My fingerprint sensor is working, luckily.

Welcome to the community forum

No, using A/B slots the OS should simply revert to the previous version, user data would not be affected. In the case summary above, I see no example of data loss after 7 resets, though there is a case where the resets failed.

Thanks I’ll likely give this a try later. Just worried incase I loose photos etc I have there that are not backed up.

I have the open support discussion with fairphone still going on I added this android 15 possibly messing things up to my email chain with them.

Just to add some more traction to this. I had the same issue with a broken FrPt sensor (and an unanswered ticket for months about that).
Rebooting 7 times rolled back to A14.

This issue will probably impact every one that’s having the fingerprint issue cited in this thread Fingerprint stopped working, setting completely gone

There are many angry users with months old unanswered tickets about this. Fairphone support is completely silent.

@anon76468197 please follow-up internally reg, the tickets open for vanished fingerprint-reader settings, to speed up the process and consider the current issue and if this is faulty hardware.

Same issue. Attempted reboot dozens of time and still on the green line of death. I thought making previous models unusable when you’re launching a new one was what other companies did, not Fairphone

While I understand frustration thats just nonsense. The majority still just works fine as before.

So you confirm you also had the fingerprint reader issue before the update?

Then why do they offer zero support? Once you’ve bought it, they’re no longer interested. A proper company that cared about sustainability would help fix problems and not outsource to useless AI chatbots and a ‘community’

Yes, the fingerprint scanner stopped working a long time ago but I was happy using PIN etc. The latest update messed around with a lot of things up in slightly annoying ways, including bluetooth not working. So I reset and now in the same cycle as everyone else of the vertical line of death

while support is really too slow, your statement still is exaggerated and wrong. They offer support, else why upgrading to A15 and providing monthly updates?

Either way, thats not the topic here. To express understandable frustration about support times, there are dedicated topics for this, here kindly focus on the issue itself. Also for other issues open as needed separate topics or comment on the general update topic.
