FP5 Esim compatibility

I have just found this nice guide on FP4 esim availability, would anyone be willing to help me with creating one for FP5?

My personal interest? I am planning to spend a few months over next 12 months in the UK and thinking about getting eSIM with a UK number, as it might be easier for some to contact me locally, without actually thinking about roaming charges as they vary, and it also might be cheaper in terms of data. Wi-FI calling and VoLTE would be a nice thing to have then.

There have been some threads on some networks in the UK not being so fairphone friendly, like this [for example], but nothing structured. (Can't make calls on UK Three network). I am in no rush, the first trip is not till August, but I would really like something reliable so I can use it with no worries.

On the general guide creation, I think I would manage with a template but my experience is mostly limited to a (one) Polish network.

I know the Fairphone published the list so perhaps there is no need for such a guide? What do you think?

I moved this discussion to the discussion section which we can close once its decided to create a wiki guide or not. Or it could be kept as wikimetadiscussion .

Once you have have a discussion ongoing, its not so useful to make it a wiki afterwards.

If you want to make a wiki ensure to close the topic immediately for discussion.

Hi, thanks, that makes sense.

Hi @Meaghan,

love the idea,
i will try to help when you decide to make the wiki. :+1:

i think its dependent on how often Fairphone update this list, and if users wich to have different information than already provided by this list on the Fairphone website.

Its nice to have something we can change fast and easy as community, where we can increase the available information in a clear way, Finding the information in a discussion obviously involves a lot of reading work that not everyone wants to do. a wiki do not have that issue, that’s probably why you suggested to make a wiki.

a problem that can arise in time if the list is not maintained or is incomplete.

for example this wiki
is a bit outdated, and incomplet. the list on the Fairphone website provide different information, same moment its more recently changed and has all the providers, that makes it more relevant than the wiki.
i was updating it yesterday. i noticed that it was way more work that i expected to change and check all information.

not to bring the idea down, just to be aware of this so it can be made in a way this dilapidation is unlikely to happen.

@Meaghan wat information will you love to see added to the liston the Fairphone website?

edit:

you probably already thought of this yourself,

how big will be the differences between FP4 and FP5 talking about esim, i expect very smal. maybe more efficient to include the FP5 in to the FP4 wiki.

most information will be the same for both phones.

change the title and distribution. add something in the list so its clear if the information is for both models or only one of the two.

ore is this a bad idea?

greetings

Tom

Hi @T4om , many thanks for your kind reply.

i think its dependent on how often Fairphone update this list, and if users wich to have different information than already provided by this list on the Fairphone website.

The list published by FP is not so inclusive for many countries and regions, especially those outside their regional reach (like US). My guess would be it is not updated on a regular basis but that is the assumption really. The list they provide is more on VoLTE than eSIM while I suppose we could create something more general.

I love the idea of just amending the current wiki on FP4, I did change the title and added a bit of information on Poland. Still, without your prompt, I would not have considered it I think, I am always a bit concerned about crashing something when you try to improve it (we have a saying in Polish that ‘better is the enemy of good’ )

what information will you love to see added to the liston the Fairphone website?

  1. More regions and countries. Like if you go to Australia/US and suddenly discover that there is a huge thread on what works or not. I do not expect FP to include it though as it might be misleading - customers would assume it to be working there

  2. Information on both eSIM and VoLTE compatibility

  3. The information on subsidiary networks. If I don’t know the local market and go to the store, I would see many names which do not sound familiar or are not included in the official list. For example, FP mentions Telekom working in Poland, but I guess it translates into T-Mobile which is a Polish operator owned by Telekom

  4. Potentially but this is a controversial topic - any past issues where updates have been delayed for unknown reasons. It is controversial because judging from the forum, big players working directly with FP might be disadvantaged here. I don’t really know what is happening behind the scenes, but on several occasions users of a network with many FP customers had their updates delayed while it never happened to me (maybe one day delay once) and I do not see Poland as a huge market for FP customers

Hi @Meaghan

Very wel written. good point’s

i think a very good start, like the onder construction note, not going fast step by step to allow other users to interact and add or remove the change.

i dit a small edit as well.

have a eSim from this company in my FP5 so i feel safe to add my personal experience there. i found the existing text for FP4 is very accurate to my experience on the FP5 as well.
only added the FP4 and FP5 marking.

wat do you think of the format i used?

Vodafone NL [FP4, FP5]:

When we find the best formaat

can be updated.

the existing wiki is about eSim. this makes it difficult to add information about physical Sim carts in not supported countries.

i can add som networks from Tanzania used in my FP5. issue only can talk about the physical SIM.

to change the eSIM wiki to a SIM/network wiki will be to radicale i afraid.

maybe you or someone els have a good idear how to document this information here on the form?

using my experience for a example, to make a phat for everyone to document ther experience. please ignore the information just discuss about the format.

greetings

Tom

Hi both I dont think we should add everything in 1 wiki, def do not include lenghty information about non supported countries like Tansania, Australia, Canada, US im general . Please always think about people using the smartphone to read in the forum, and scrolling through a 1 covers all topic gives me nightmares

I think if anyone feels we need more comprehensive info about non-supported countries, a wiki only for this should be created irrespective of physical or eSIM and should also include the FP3 in my eyes.

Overall eSIM compatibiliy in suporrted countries and networks is not a real issue I think, its rather availabilty, or are there many examples where eSIM doesnt work when using in a FP4 or FP5 for a supported network? I would rather change the title to availability, remove Ukraine and there should be no need to always add the device, as both support eSIM

I think to refer to the official list reg supported networks (VoLTE should work for all of them I wouöd say?) should be fine and the best to do, to avoid misunderstandings. As noted above such wikis are often outdated because not updated after first info was added.

Reg UK: I would use one of the supported networks/operators and check if they offer eSIM.

Hi, thanks for chipping in.

I love the idea of sharing the experience of using FP outside Europe, which could be very useful for travel.

I have a computer free day so will come back to that tomorrow but for now I am thinking about creating a separate wiki for travel and using @T4om information on Tanzania there.

I will not be further modifying the eSIM availability list at the moment (perhaps just edit my note on Poland) but I would hate the idea of deleting stuff that some other people put there before (on US, Ukraine, etc). It wasn’t any of my doing but I find it useful and would not like to see it gone.

I can copy it to the wiki on travel though, if people find it a good idea.

Ok, so I did dare to try my chances with this topic

@T4om I assumed you don’t mind I use your source on Tanzania as a good example, please feel free to edit it

once I finish some over due tasks at work I will have a second look to how it could be improved
