FP5 does not start after update

I updated my fp5 to android 14 and after finishing to download the update I restarted it and since then it only shows the “Fairphone change is in your hands” screen without turning on. I rebooted it a couple of times with no success.

Update: I removed the battery and rebooted it, the phone finally turned on but the update didn’t manage to download, I’m afraid to try again

Hello
Not sure what to suggest other than following the official advice

I haven’t yet installed the latest update cause I am travelling and since it is a major update I want to do the proper backup.

Has your phone been fully charged and prompted you to reboot?

So you could again boot normally? At the end there is no way other than backing up all important data and start again. How long was it on the blue screen before you started to try to reboot? Maybe it just needed more time? Upgrades can take longer so just leave it and I would say up to 15-30 minutes

I had the same problem. After a Reset with one Minute battery removal, I did a second update and then everything worked fine. The reboot took only a little longer then normal.

Hello, I have the same problem: endless blue screen even after removing and replacing the battery after a few minutes.
What should I do?

You have to replace the battery for 5 Minutes or so while and press the power button (to discharge the capacitators). At first I waited only for a few seconds and that did not work either.

I waited all night and it still didn’t restart!

it’s me again; that works!
when restarting I pressed the “stop” button for a long time; which started the fp5 in “safe” mode with the message “update failed” and then I tried again and it restarted within a minute.

Too bad the widgets have disappeared!

This happens sometimes for a few user.

Same here. Nothing helps. Hopefully there is an easy fix, because I am travelling and updates normally work and did not expect this.

What is the stop button?

Now after pressing several buttons and pulling the battery, I am glad, it at least booted. The updated failed. Is there any way to know the reason and fix it?

Just start another update at home. My second one went smoothly and I did not change a thing (beside a backup).

I downloaded and installed the newest software update onmy Fairphone 5 today. After it finished this process, it asked me to either “restart now” or “restart at 2am”, or something along those lines. This was entirely normal and as usual. I chose “restart now”. The phone turned off. After a while, the black startup screen appeared, as it normally would, and then proceeded to the blue “Fairphone - change is in your hands” screen. And it stayed there. For much, much longer than usual. I did not check how long, because i put down the phone and plugged in the charger (even though the battery charge was around 80% at the time). It must have stayed on the blue screen for at least 10 minutes. Confused, i went and picked up the phone, and, after googling, tried to boot it into safe mode. This worked. I chose the “start” option and confirmed. Then, again, it showed the blue screen. For way too long. After a while, since nothing was happening, i turned it off with a long press of the power button. Now, every time i try to turn on the device, the same process repeats. Black screen → black screen with fairphone writing and android logo (you know the one) → blue screen. It then stays on the blue screen. As i am writing this, it’s still on the blue screen, with no signs of activity. I would be incredibly thankful for any advice and tips of any kind, as i am heavily dependant on the phone working properly.

Some information i think might be relevant:

Model: Fairphone 5

Software: Standard software. I did not install any third party OS or similar, only apps through google play store

Bought: less than one year ago, through online reseller

Battery status when problem occurred: not charging, charge around 80%

SD Card: yes, only photos stored on it

The software was always updated ASAP when an update dropped

I am entirely lost on what to do, as i can’t even access the safe boot option anymore. I’d really like to avoid any data loss as well, if possible. Sadly i cannot reach the Fairphone live chat, as they are only active for a suprisingly short duration, on only a few days a week.

Thank you for the kind welcome. You’re absolutely right, the mentioned post is exactly my issue as well. I did try to search for similar issues, but i seem to have missed it.

Just wanted to pitch in that I also still have this issue. I tried twice to leave it on for 30 mins, and tried twice to remove the battery for 5 min while holding the power button for some time. I have also tried the bootloader and recovery but could not find a safe mode.

It still boots into the blue FP screen and stays there. Any more tips would be hugely recommended.

If you haven’t done so yet, you might want to try these instructions to get into Safe Mode:
