For the desktop mode discussion please head over
dangerous to activate the kill switch by mistake hahah
what do you mean by mute button? like when you’re on call?
added to the website
There is also a pdf manual which - though not without minor mistakes - I think is a nice addition.
With the FP Gen. 6, is it possible to launch an app such as the camera with (one of) the hardware buttons?
I suppose the Moments switch can only be used to switch to a (custom) profile and back to standard profile.
the switch button can activate some other features such as airplane mode, light torch, and more. but not launch an app yet. that’s a to-do
edit : i guess the double-tap power button would still work, it seems that it’s an android universal gesture.
The PDF manual has some answer about the buttons
- Quickly Open Camera: Double-press the Power button to launch the camera from any screen, even when the phone is locked. (This is a standard Android feature and can be checked in Settings → System → Gestures).
- Customize the Power Button: By default, pressing and holding the Power button launches the digital assistant (Gemini or Google Assistant). If you prefer it to show the power off and restart options, you can change this behavior.
- Go to Settings → System → Gestures.
- Tap Press and hold power button.
- Select Power menu. Now, when you press and hold the power button, the power options will appear instead of the assistant.
The moments switch can be configured to either
- Moments (the default)
- there are some presets but it’s possible to configure custom Moments profiles
- Do not disturb
- Airplane mode
- Torch
- Dark mode toggle
- Energy saver
The options for the moments switch I took from this (German) video https://youtu.be/7iDb34aAe0k?feature=shared&t=140
Thank you! I wouldn’t have guessed that there actually is a real manual
I sure do hope the main button was improved for this feature compared to the FP5 so it won’t worn out and double click
Oh no, why would they do this? No external display is a true setback!
Is this limitation because of software or hardware?
Would a later USB-module be able to change this to USB 3 with alt mode and co.?
Does the FP6 (FP G6) have a Qi wireless charging function?
Please see and discuss in the dedicated topic.
No.
I guess it is seen as environmentally questionable because of lower efficiency, but others might correct me or point to some official statement.
Thanks for the link, I somehow thought that thread was rolled up in here.
I will wait for the facelift 6+ or the 7 and hope Javier rethinks his stance on the downgrade to USB 2 in the meantime.
My FP3 will keep on running for a long time I hope as the 6 is no real (hardware) update to the 3 for my use cases anymore.
I updated Fairphone dimensions and weights. The extent of the camera bump on The Fairphone (6 Gen.) is my estimate based on calculating the pixel ratio in this photo of the side of the device.
EDIT taking into account @Kalibri’s reply.
I’m happy that i waited and didn’t ordered in April. Ordered yesterday and should recieve it on tomorrow
The dimensions of the bump are on this site:
I ordered the FP5 in mid-May and there were supply delays until June 30th apparently, so I ended up canceling and ordering the FP6 ^^
Just picked mine up at a UPS AP.
Really like the green colour. Applied the screen protector and (of course) caught a speck of dust… . Will start setup and data transfer tomorrow or Saturday.
If somebody have the new phone and some spare time, could you check if AoD extreme battery drain is gone on the FP6?
Thanks for your review! For some reason it got moved into this overcrowded thread.
What I find most interesting is that switching out the battery requires a screwdriver. That, together with the higher amount of RAM in the ShiftPhone 8 and the fact that I can reuse my Shift6mq batteries means that I’ll stick with my preorder of that one, even though the Fairphone 6 is quite similar in most other specs. Having an optical stabiliser would be nice, but not worth fiddling around with a tiny screwdriver in the middle of nowhere during a bike tour. Replacing a Shift6mq battery is so easy that I’ve even done it while driving my bike.
I really hope that the switch can be rebound, otherwise it will be useless for a large portion of users and a wasted opportunity where a fourth button could be. If it’s meant to protect people with ADHD or children, then just moving a slider to turn the feature off again is definitely too easy.
Back when I first heard of Fairphone, I assumed that modular upgrades would be the overall plan for all phones and that there would only be one main phone with increasingly powerful components over time. So I got quite disappointed when Fairphone 2 and Fairphone 3 were released relatively soon after. That goes against sustainable electronics, if I end up having to replace the entire phone every couple years anyway, just to keep having a modern device. I know someone who recently completed a full Ship of Theseus with their ≈7 year old desktop computer, no part in it is the same anymore as when they originally bought it. That’s how smartphones should ideally work, too.
