Fairphone (generation 6) launched 25 June

why is the FP6 actually launched and available within days, but all? the accessories, protection, case etc are not? sigh :(((((((((((

the shop never? allows for pre-ordering all the stuff together as a single delivery. why just why

the screen protector for FP6 is nowhere to be found directly on a separate page to see the details, within the ordering process of FP6 device itself it pops up as an accessory later on and it seems there as if there were two? distinct? versions of the screen protector such as distinct color versions for cases (which are not yet available for purchase though), so I wonder what you click there amongst the FP6 screen protector variants exactly? or is this a mistake? bluefilter and normal screen protector or both inside the package?

its such as shame that on launch day of a new generation of a flagship product the store is in such a messy and deranged state :frowning:

Not sure this is a serious post. The new name is probably better for a number if reasons and I understand that Fairphone will use it in their marketing. But it’s probably too complex for average users, who will continue to call it “Fairphone 6” or even “FP6”.

Thanks, very much appreciated!

The switch: It’s quite a big physical thing for a feature surely not that many will use regulary. I hope it’ll be possible to use it for other features later on, e.g. flashlight, night/flight mode, …
Being an on/off slider does limit the possible use cases, though…

Ethics, sustainability and others: There seems to be a slight improvement. And given how everything goes downhill thanks to the different (wannabe) dictators, even keeping up the old standard seems an accomplishment to me.

Box contents: Having the screwdriver in the additions really seems weird to me. And why not offer it for 1-3€/$ as an optional add-on?

Less replaceable battery: Sure, it’s more stable than the old clips, even more so with the additions. But wasn’t there some solution without screws? Like some mechanical lock?
But I like it’s got new screws. One for my FP4 display is stuck without any grip.

.99 prices: Well, people are used to it for better or worse, and sadly it often seems to work.

They said they will do better about communication with the community. The launch of a new product would be prime time for FP employees to drop in on the forum and answer some of these questions.

I was thinking the same. Particularly helpful for me would be a slider that activated do-not disturb mode and turns the volume down to zero (and keeps it there until the slider is moved into the other position). Sure, there are apps for that, but a slider is something one can easily visually check if you walk into a meeting with 5000 participants, etc. .

In the promo video that appeared at 11am this morning they said something about hanging out in the comments section of Youtube, I believe. So maybe that is where the real discussion is taking place?

I also feel it’s a bit of a mistake to treat this forum as just any user forum of any brand. The quest for a more sustainable phone needs to be led by a movement in which phone owners are active participants, not just another commercial phone company.

But then again, I don’t know the history of this forum. Maybe they think Youtube is a better place to discuss for some reason.

Just checked. Indeed they are responding to youtube comments. Though the type of discussion in youtube comments isnt really insightful or useful. Just people expressing their general interest in the device. Which is nice.

But I just dont understand why on earth they chose youtube comments under their premier to be a place for discussion? Why not social media? Reddit? Or their very own forum?
And they still announce the release of updates here on the forum, as their socials are purely marketing tools with zero human interaction.
I just dont understand their decisions when it comes to communication.

We on this forum constantly emphasize for newcomers, that this is a community forum, and we dont have official support staff monitoring this place. This is just a wild forum, that Fairphone themselves seems to endorse, as the pre installed app on their phone has a quick link to this place.
So I guess they never treated this place as anything big, deep, meaningful, or serious. But neither any other place.

I would disagree, this was very different at the beginning and got worse over time and especially in the past 1-2 years. When I started as a moderator there still was a designated person to manage the forum and there was a lot more interaction.

Has anyone read anything about the augmented reality capabilities of the FP6? I don’t think any other FP has it. I have used it on other phones and I find it interesting when, for example, taking distance measurements.

As far as I know those need lidar, but the past two fairphones only had an infrared beam for camera auto focus. I think you have to stick to iphones and ipads if you want that feature.

The truth is that when I have used this feature on friends’ phones it has mainly been on iPhones, yes. However, I think that I’ve done it on a friend’s phone with a Google Pixel (I don’t remember which model), and from what little I’ve looked at (without having any idea about this subject), there’s something called ARCore on Android (and they have a few models, listed here) that must be something like that, right?

But then again, I have no idea about this, but it seems like an interesting and useful feature for a new smartphone .

If someone spots a place other than the fairphone shop where The Fairphone (Gen 6) can be bought, please extend the ✏ List of Fairphone 6 Resellers

It just has one entry right now to get the whole thing started. If anyone needs some inspiration what kind of information to enter, have a look at the older ✏ List of Fairphone 5 Resellers

It is indeed USB 2.0, I was at the launch event and can confirm this. The reason they gave for it was mainly affordability (price), but I don’t know exactly why. I wouldn’t use desktop mode anyway, so for me it doesn’t really matter. And about other options for the switch button: they are included, such as battery saver, flashlight, airplane mode and some others.
Also happy to mention that the case protects the screen better than for FP4 and FP5 since the edge is higher.

At a quick glance over this, it seems like pure software magic. So realisticly, there is no reason any android phone couldnt support this feature. The Nothing 3a is even listed as a supported device. Which has the same SoC as the FP6.
But take this with a grain of salt, as I dont know anything about this. You probably have to bug google to support fairphones.

And personally, I’m skeptical this tool has the same capabilities as the lidars on iphones. This seems like spatial mapping.

I’m interested in what as well :man_shrugging:.
Something I am missing in the 5.
The support team told it’s because of the hardware ( Fairphone 5).
Hopefully the 6 gen will support it!

ARCore support has been a discussion for all FPs so far and for the FP3…

For those wondering what the switch will do with /e/OS “on your The Fairphone (Gen. 6)” (:person_facepalming:), please see the FAQ here (nearly at the end) …

(As mentioned in the /e/OS community forum, which I can highly recommend as an additional resource for users of /e/OS on their Fairphones.)

You don’t need lidar for that just a verification for the camera so it can mesure distance correctly

which fairphones don’t have

Hardware kill switch…

I mean, its a nice feature still. Hope it cant be circumvented easilly.
But how on earth did they not think to make it a classic mute switch. Come on.

Before my fairphone, I had a BlackShark 2. And it also has a hardware switch, for a game space where you play all your gaemz and it turns on DnD and optimises performance.
For 4 years I was hoping they would push an update where it can be made into a mute toggle. Nope :upside_down_face:
