Hi there, I am a Fairphone 4 owner since it came out, coming up to 4 years. I had planned to keep until 2026 but I like the idea of moving to /e/OS (seeing the recent news about what Google is doing with Gemini) and although I could put this onto my FP4 myself I have read that the “official” version pre-installed on phones seems to be slightly different to installing manually. I would hope to recycle my FP4 (I think Fairphone gave a quote of 105 Euros), or I might pass it on to a family member.
Anyway, regarding the FP6, one thing I am not clear about is what camera app comes with the “official” /e/OS version, does anyone know? I am talking about the version I would buy from the Fairphone official shop (The Fairphone (Gen. 6) now with privacy-first /e/OS). When I compare this shop page to the standard FP6 I do see a difference in the screenshots of the photo app, but the commentary is the same for both - “Every Shot, On Point… Capture rich detail with the pro-level wide lens, or switch to the ultra-wide for the bigger picture…” etc.
I would like to understand if there would be a different camera app / experience using the “official” /e/OS version compared to the standard Android version? I have seen some discussions about camera differences when people have installed the “community” version of /e/OS themselves on a FP6 (example: Fairphone 6 - camera zoom does not function) but nothing yet on the “official” version, unless I missed it.
The app used on the official marketing pictures seems to be OpenCamera. That is what comes by default with /e/os. I don’t personally have a fp6 with e/os so someone will need to comfirm if the official app works on it too
Thank you to @Furdiburd and @yvmuell for the responses, I had missed that other thread - I guess I would need to buy the FP6 with the understanding that it might get the official Fairphone camera app but no 100% guarantees - thank you!
Thanks! Do you think that is the only difference? I got the impression that there is more to the official Fairphone camera app than just the ability to zoom.
A bit like how they improved the FP4 camera massively with just an app update last year, I thought that the official Fairphone camera app on the FP6 would produce better pictures or somehow be a better experience than a generic Opencamera app?
That is great news, thanks! It is great to see that they have a fix for /e/OS and I am not really too fussed about the preview/gallery button anyway (I actually have disabled this on my stock Fairphone 4!).
In the apps description it says it is incompatible to gapps and microg. So I doubt it would work on /e/OS. However, you probably meant to share this, which indeed works:
Also Shamim GCam seems to work, didn’t do a lot of testing. But it allows opening pictures in any gallery-app without an extra-app:
Thanks for this. This works.
Annoyingly it will only open the last photo/video in the preview button, instead of a gallery view.
Right now it’s bright, and I’m not seeing a notable difference in image quality with the main camera, but the wide camera definitely has better processing.
Or rather, I suspect that the cameras in the stock /e/ app has essentially no processing applied right now.
I think the main camera does 2x2 binning, which is why it looks so much better in the normal app as each pixel has a decent combination of colour and luminosity information already.
In the bug tracker it’s been reported that many camera fixes have landed for /e/OS 3.1 release. Apparently they still plan to use the FP camera app, which might just be a decent enough solution.
