Missing features at /e/ vs. Stock FPOS on FP6

I read there is no feature parity between /e/ in comparison with the stock FPOS (gooogled), some features or settings are not available on /e/. Here I want to collect all missing features, which are not related to the flavour of /e/ itself (de-googled, privacy, … ) and ask about the chance that this features will find the way in a later /e/-version.

I am inspired by this post on the e-community and want to collect also input from the FP forums side.

This is a fist question collection, please feel free to comment and expand the list.
On /e/ pre-installed by murena/FP@FP6 (which version?) in comparison to stock FPOS:

  • Charge limiting missing? (here: yes / Gitlab issue)
  • FP Camera app (here: not (yet?))
  • open camera installed/usable with all camera-featuers??
  • does all native camera-features are working, if a compatible GCam-version is installed (See my other post)? (not all: e.g. zoom, full resolution, gitlab issue)
  • “Slide Button” does not enable “Moments” nor is it configurable at the moment. Teams are working on it (link) - but is it safe to say that we will have feature parity in some weeks/months?
  • Whats about Always-On-Display or LEDBlinker or similar apps (as replace of notification LED)
  • What’s about “double tap to wake up” (missing, gitlab issue) and “double Tap to status bar to sleep” (works)?

What did I miss? Where is no feature parity to stock FPOS, what we should know before deciding between /e/ and stock FPOS?

on /e/OS v3.0.4:

  • No charge-limiter
  • Can’t (or don’t know how to) zoom in/out in the stock camera-app.
  • Slide-switch blocks/unblocks cam+mic
  • No aod-settings/functionality
  • Has no Android Auto stubs (I think those are needed for Android Auto to work, not sure though, will test soon)
  • Double-tap to sleep works fine

EDIT:
In regards to Android Auto, I was right unfortunately…

EDIT2:
With APatch & aa4mg Android Auto works.

  • No charge-limiter → Does anybody have information if/when this will/can follow in the near future?
  • Can’t (or don’t know how to) zoom in/out in the stock camera-app. → Could you test OpenCamera or a GCam-Version?
  • Slide-switch blocks/unblocks cam+mic
  • No aod-settings/functionality → Does this mean it is not usable at all? Does anybody have information if/when this will/can follow in the near future? For me this would be a show stopper, as there is no Notification LED (see here).
  • Has no Android Auto stubs (I think those are needed for Android Auto to work, not sure though, will test soon)
  • Double-tap to sleep works fine → On Status bar? Can you also test double-tap for display on?

Thanks four your feedback. You have a FP6 with /e/ at hand and would be willing to test some more and report back here?

The LineageOS-update approach I am familiar (weekly/monthly updates with all merged issues). How this works in /e/ OS?

Camera: I tried gcam and I cannot zoom at all.
Double-tap to wake: I don’t see any settings to enable it.
Themes & contrast: /e/OS doesn’t support changing the color theme (officially it seems) and when changing “colour contrast”-settings, nothing happens. I guess both things are related.

I will do more testing, since I plan to leave e/OS/ installed until LineageOS or other ROMs become available.

/e/OS kinda stinks, ngl. It has these unecessary inconveniences that are starting to grind my gears. For example:

  • Like I mentioned, the color blue is forced upon the whole system.
  • play store links cannot be opened with any other app than “app lounge”, not even in the browser. They purposely forced it upon THEIR app.
  • 90% of their stock apps (including “app lounge”) can not be disabled and they are not good enough to justify that. For example the gallery app is extremely basic and worse than any gallery app I ever tried.

Thats not e/OS specific and depends on the pictures you selected for home and/lock screen?

I thought the same but changing the wallpaper doesn’t do anything. AFAICT they don’t implement it because it would take a lot of effort to prevent color-inconsistencies across apps. See:

AOD seems to be enabled by default. I’ve installe LEDBlinker, and it works just fine. I even can wake up the screen by double tap if a notification is displayed by LEDBlinker.

It is not possible to download the MyFairphone app on the e/os phone right? Does this mean the moments button is useless or is there another way to acces the settings?

The MyFairphone app is currently not available on other operating systems.

Q: Can I use the app on an alternative operating system such as /e/OS?

No. The MyFairphone App depends on some Google Play Service APIs. So the phone needs to have Google Play Services installed. The MyFairphone App currently does not work with operating systems other than the Fairphone OS. However, we are looking into the possibilities to make it available in the future.

The switch is not useless, but is currently limited in its uses.

Q: Is Fairphone Moments available on The Fairphone (Gen. 6) with Murena eOS?

Fairphone Moments is not available on devices running Murena eOS, only on Android for Fairphone. On devices running Murena eOS the physical switch will enable & disable your camera and microphone access to easily safeguard your privacy when needed. We are working with the team at Murena to see if we can expand the options assigned to the switch as you see on your The Fairphone (Gen. 6) running Android.

There’s likely more discussion over on the Murena forum, such as here

Good to hear!
Would you be so kind and post some more details about this and some screenshots & photos of the notification-app via VOD works in this LED-Notification topic? That would be of great help!

Which exactly app version/port? There exists a zoo of it… Did you tried different ones? This could maybe do the trick…

I used the latest BSG apk from here:

There’s no magic, and I didn’t change any system settings. Just installed LED Blinker and followed the instructions on the initial start of the app (grant some permissions). That’s all. It worked out of the box.

I’ve tried Led blinker as an Always On Display, but it was quite buggy…
Now I’ve found a very great alternative: Always On AMOLED

The free version has everything you need and replaces your lock screen. Works perfectly and looks the part too.
So for me this feature is already covered and even better than on my previous Samsung and Google phones.

Update: I’ve found an open source AOD on Fdroid that’s very complete:

The biggest things with /e/ for me right now is:

The camera issue is interesting, none of the apps have access to the full 50MP of the sensor, only the quartered resolution. Zoom is also not honoured, if you set the zoom level manually, the camera app thinks its zoomed but it isn’t. Wide camera is processed badly as well. Not sure if the ToF sensor is used to assist in focus.

Another thing is, for me the touch of the screen feels… inconsistent. it’s consistent if I press harder, but bad if touching lightly and suddenly doing a flick (like is a common use case). In that case the movement is really lethargic, like it never registered the fast movement. It doesn’t matter whether the display refresh rate is 60 or 120Hz for that. Not sure where to report it as I don’t know if it’s an /e/ issue or a FP6 issue.

I can confirm most of the points on FP6 with /e/OS 3.0.4:

  • there is simply no settings for “tap to wake” - is this just a matter of time, until it will integrated to /e/OS - or will it simply just not show up there for any reason? (I will ask supprt) (Gitlab issue)
  • Tap to sleep” → always worked during my tests
  • GCam works quite OK for all three cameras and makes MUCH better images (also night & macro) than stock camera app (open camera) - but no zoom is possible, and the gallery from preview is not working (I tried “MWP 8.8” - any better recomendation?) - will upload some images later…
Oh… Video recording does not work with this Port :-/ Just crashes… So can’t test the mic… (made some more tests - I think I solved it)
  • also for me “inverse layout” of navigation buttons does not show any effect - will contact support. So for me the FP6 is not usable in one-hand mode (for right handers) :frowning: (Gitlab issue)
  • there is simply no setting for “always on display (AOD)”. Anyway I can use e.g. LED Blinker to replace the missing notification LED, but it consumes about 2-3% per hour of battery, because it can’t use the nativ AOD feature FPOS does support. Will ask support.

edit: added the gitlab issues of /e/ OS

Hi everbody,
I’m using a Fairphone 6 with /e/OS and can’t cast videos to my Nvidia Shield Pro.
Has anyone with the same setup managed to cast to a TV successfully?

Thanks!

Just purchased FP6 with e/os but I cannot see an option for face unlock??
