Fairphone 5 water damage (Vienna)

Hey everyone,

My Fairphone 5 fell into a pool about two weeks ago. Surprisingly, it kept working for a couple of days afterward, but then the display stopped responding. The alarm still went off the next day, so I’m guessing the phone itself was still running in the background.

Now the screen stays completely black, and I’m trying to figure out which part might be damaged. Has anyone dealt with something similar or knows how to check which module is causing the issue? Any tips would be super appreciated!

Christoph

Have a look at the waterwiki.
Succes

Anyone has parts to test and figure out what is broken and if the phone can still be repaired?

I felt in a lake wednesday, FP5 in my pocket. Fireman helped me out 20 min later, then 1 hour to dry and heat up. Then I opened it, took out battery and unscrewed upper and lower panel. Dryed it for 48 h, blew it out with aircan. Now its ok since 24 h, I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

What ?!? You got stuck 20 mn in the lake ?!?

Yes, a motorboat tried to tow me from the shore. Went to fast… a canoe is not easy to tow…

After writing to you I re-read the water wiki and found out I forgot to unmount the screen. I did and dried it for another 24 h. I hope my FP5 will continue functioning now.

For Vienna I suggest to contact the community/angels fairphoneangel

ok, and how I can contact community/angels in Vienna?

How to get in touch

You simply need to locate the Angels that are closest to your location and contact them via e-mail. They will then try to give you tips and can organise to meet up with you to solve your problem if necessary. The existing Angels can be found below.

Warning: Please be aware that mails from Fairphone Angels might end up in the spam folder of your inbox, notably in Gmail. We recommend you to check it regularly when you are awaiting a reply from a Fairphone Angel, so you won’t miss an email.

@ChristophFreh

I might have missed that but have you opened the phone and given it a chance to dry?

Yes I opened it, remove battery and usbc-port part, did not helped really !

Hi thanks

As suggested by waterwiki linked above, it would be advisable to fully disassemble a device and clean it with isopropanol alcohol.

Unfortunately I don’t know where liquid indicators are located at FP6 but I would check any connectors for visible damage.

I understand you might feel not that comfortable with cleaning but disassembly feels like a necessary step at the moment.

Also I would advise against testing the phone before you’re sure it is dry and thoroughly cleaned.

Edited to say I don’t know why I read FP6. Indicators for FP5 are known as @yvmuell mentioned.

The indicators on the FP5

ok - I opened the phone and I guess these indicators are now turned red because of the water. My question how is this now helping me?

it would be advisable to fully disassemble a device and clean it with isopropanol alcohol.

For sure it would’ve been very advisable to not continue using your phone full of water, but what is done is done…
