Fairphone 3+ not charging correctly

,

Hello,

I’ve looked around the forum and I’ve not been able to find a solution so I’m reaching out. I have a Fairphone 3+ and it does not appear to charge.

When it is on, it doesn’t appear to charge at all. The battery icon remains as usual and the percentage does not go up.

When it is off, it seems to charge but then loops into off and on quickly. It tells me ‘Fairphone is charging’. Then the screen goes black. A few seconds later, the phone vibrates and tells me ‘Fairphone is charging’, then goes black. repeat.

  • I have tried three different cables and plugs. All brought back the same result.

  • I have tried to reboot in safe mode but that was unsuccessful.

  • I have taken the phone apart and cleaned the modules.

  • I happened to have a spare USB-C module but that didn’t resolve the issue.

  • The battery is not inflated but I do not have a spare one at hand to change it.

Based on the above, would you recommend ordering a new battery and seeing what happens?

If yes, do you know if I can source one from the UK?

The current battery was new in early March 2024 and has shown no issue since.

Let me know if you need any other info to be able to help.

I doubt I’ll be able to turn the phone on as I am at 4% battery right now.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

It’s not particularly specific in terms of narrowing down the actual cause of the charging malfunction, but still: Have you tried charging the phone from a computer? (ideally desktop computer, but a laptop would suffice as well as long as it’s connected to charge itself, too).

Apologies for the lack of specificity. I’m not very technical so wouldn’t know what is needed.

I tried charging from the wall, from a desktop (Ubuntu) and from a Laptop (Windows). All those options have worked in the past.

Just to clarify: I did not mean to criticize lack of specificity on your part. I rather meant that my suggestion would not necessarily immediately identify the issue. :slightly_smiling_face: (was just looking for any way to allow you to charge the phone beyond the 4 %).

Hello
you should be able to purchase one from the shop. But before jumping into that - do you have a MyFairphone App installed on your device, could you run some troubleshooting?

I just have had a quick look on the relevant troubleshooting process via self-repair portal and they also suggest running internal tests - so that could be one of the first steps

Finally, you mentioned the UK, you may try contacting the local Angels, perhaps they could try charging your battery and/or device; or ask at local communities topics

Thanks.

Following your link, I went to the battery check and it comes back positive with good battery health. When I plug in the phone it says ‘charging’ but it’s not. It just went down from 3% to 2%.

Voltage is 3.47. It went to 3.60 when I plugged into a wall charger.

I had a look at the local Angels. Sadly the closest one is quite far so I don’t think they’ll be able to help more than the forum.

Thank you for getting back on that.

In order to avoid any misunderstanding, are we talking about this kind of test?

Are there any differences in results when the phone is charging/connected and not charging/not connected?

Yes, that’s the one.

For what it’s worth (more time for troubleshooting or temporary workaround), the FP3/FP3+ battery can be charged with a fitting universal smartphone battery charger … External universal chargers for Fairphone batteries

Thanks. That is super handy to know. I’ll have a look into this as a temporary solution.
