All, as I am more centered around a virtual desktop infrastrucure I would like my FP5 to replace my laptop in some instances.
For that purpose, I would like to run a keyboard, a mouse and an external monitor from the USB-C port and desktop mode. The idea works with my Lenovo Thunderbolt Docking station, but that device is stationary. The more “portable” USB-C to HDMI/USB adapters leave me stranded. The USB portion works, but for the life of me I can’t get the video output to chooch. Yes, I loaded the parts cannon and bought three different versions, no luck - to add insult to injury, they do work as intended with the woman’s Galaxy S11, so it must be something about the FP.
Thanks for the tip (doesn’t the FP5 have Miracast built in?), but I would like to use the native Desktop mode. “The more 3rd party, the less fun” is a lesson I have come to learn.
I regularly use the Kensington SD1500 USB-C Mobile Dock. (60€ on Amazon, cheaper on eBay)
It works well for both FP4 and FP5, and for both “mirror mode” and “desktop mode”.
No extra software needed, just plug and that’s all
The only drawback is that there is only one USB-A port, so I have to choose between wired mouse or wired keyboard… /
Only for try, I’ve buy the Digitus USB-C smartphone docking station (7 lorts).
It works with my covered FP4, but I can’t say if it suites you and your needs.
I use an hama 00200117 with my FP4. It has 2 USB-A 2.0, one USB-A 3.2 and an USB-C PD Ports. It costs about 30 Euro.
I run an archlinux in termux with proot-distro and the enlightenment desktop on top with tigervnc. As VNC Client i use AVNC. So i have a better Desktop experience than with the Android UI.
I can confirm that the Targus Universal DeXPhone is working fine with the Fairphone 5. Sometimes I have to restart the phone because the display is not working but I don’t think it’s a problem of the dock because other hardware shows the same behavior.
Hopefully that’s a proper space to ask.
I purchased a basic external monitor and managed to connect it to my FP5.
While there are some glitches ( when charging I get the notification about the liquid in the usb port) I can make it mirror my phone screen with no issues.
However I find it hard to operate the desktop mode, like I cannot launch any apps. I tried to install some digital mouse like apps but it didn’t work.
Is a docking station and a mouse crucial for operating an external monitor?
I cant answer your questions, however I recently bought the Shift Hub and this works perfect, with Monitor, mouse, keyboard. And no “liquid” notification which I had with the “bigger” HP docking station from work.
Hi!
I also got the SHIFThub and want to use it with my FP5 with iodéOS 6.3.
Unfortunately it disconnects briefly every few seconds, regardless of whether I use it with or without an external power supply.
Any idea what I could do to fix that?
I use regularly my phone on mirroring mode on a TV, my main aim is to show my (holiday) pictures on a big screen.
However for desktop mode, I would recommend at least a mouse, otherwise that’s too difficult to operate IMHO. If you don’t have a dock you can still go for a bluetooth mouse
The SHIFThub works perfectly on a laptop and two other smartphones, but on two other smartphones only with connection interruptions with different USB sticks.
Other USB sticks work. HDMI and audio via DAC also work.
However, the USB sticks work fine at the same smartphone with a USB hub from Ugreen and also with a USB adapter.
It would be nice if there was a list of Fairphone 5 compatible USB-C hubs / docking stations on the Fairphone website, along with the required Linux kernel version that contains the driver for the respective peripheral.
FTSOC: The Linux kernel in your Android OS can be found at: [Desktop\Settings\About Phone\Android version\Kernel version].
My FP5 has kernel 5.4.242 which is not exactly the newest (Linux Mint 22.1 has 6.8.0 on board, the newest version is 6.16). So the newest hardware will not work.
Have you tested the NIC (Ethernet, RJ45) connection? The AWU420GL has a Realtek RTL8153 , RTL8153B or RTL8156 controller aboard, according to the Targus driver support page (search for “AWU420”).
Linux kernel 5.13 contains a driver for the RTL8153C, RTL8153D, RTL8156A, and RTL8156B controllers [reference], but the FP5 (with Android 14) only has Linux kernel 5.4.242. I guess, Ethernet/RJ45 doesn’t work with the FP5 without the driver from the Targus driver support page.
According to Google (q=Can you install a linux driver on a phone with android 14) it’s not possible to install the “RTL8153 RTL8156 USB NIC Linux driver for kernel up to 6.10” in Android 14 on the FP5. That would involve compiling a custom kernel.
The Fairphone FP6 (with Android 15) contains a Linux kernel 6.6, so the Ethernet/RJ45 connection would give no issues in conjunction with a FP6 .
Hi @odie ,
My AWU420GL is definitely working with my FP5. I have never changed any kernel version and I’m on stock FPOS (current version but previous versions were also working). I never installed any drivers.
I own the docking station since September last year and the only problem I had was caused by a broken usb port in the phone which was only working when I put the phone in with the display to the back. With a new port everything works as expected.
