DNS over TLS/IPv6 issues- Apps don't load data over Wifi

Thanks!

It works fine with mobile data!

The support form is stupid. It has so many silly mandatory fields (date of purchase, IMEI, etc.) and it doesn’t allow Android 16 as a selection. I also need to give information, the system should already know like the model or the color because the color seems very important to wifi issues.

hello
the support form should direct you to the troubleshooting portal where it is usually pretty straightforward to proceed, and then - if you are logged in and you have purchased your device from the webshop - it helps you with recognising your device.

please always use the self-repair portal to submit any tickets (if possible).

However, in this particular case, troubleshooting wifi issues with FP6 led me to the step where the system asked me to perform the factory reset. I would imagine it might be a bit off-putting. I would then submit a ticket under “my issue is not listed”.

@faiphone. To be resolved, after the update to android 16 wifi is verry slow compairing to the situation before the update. Please sove the problem. (I am just a simple usere, not a soft- or hardware technician)

@fairphone does not exist and the forum is no proper way to report issues, the forum is a user forum.

Is this your issue?

I updated a few days ago and have problems ever since. I think its the problem which is also shared on the “Public issue tracker” → “Some apps load extremely slowly or enter infinite loading loops.” I tried the workaround. I cleared the “Android System WebView” app, but the issue sadly didn’t change. I wanted to let you know it seems its not always the solution :frowning:

Thanks for moving my post to this thread! I turned wlan off and mobile data on and I cant believe everything seems to work like a charm. That’s really good to know! Still I hope a solution can be found soon.

For me its sufficient to disable Wlan shortly, I can enable it and the it works for some time.

I’m having the same behaviour (and hoping for a patch that solves it soon).

Friendly reminder, in order to help pinpoint the cause it would be great to have logs. Or a list of apps that causes issues.

For me the Air+ app has issues and my Microsoft Exchange for work does not sync on my WiFi with DoT enabled (I use the integrated Exchange option for that to sync it with the Gmail/Android Calender/Contacts app, other non Microsoft accounts work fine). It works fine on WiFi without DoT enabled (but more testing by the community is needed to make this conclusion certain). Other apps seem to work fine.

For me it’s all apps that don’t have their own DNS resolver configured. If it breaks, all apps timeout. Firefox works because I’ve set it to use DoH internally.

Outlook, LinkedIn, Banking apps, Nextcloud, Fairmail, PocketCasts, YouTube, YT Music, all of them break after some time in wifi.

Edit: Its only on Wifi with DoT enabled in Android.

Can you list 10 apps that don’t work? It will give some more context and allows the community to compare the issues. Maybe more issues plague us. At least it does seem to be related to DoT? You tested that?

Edit: I see you added a list.

YouTube works for me all the time. So that’s interesting.

Im unsure about YouTube, I can see a long delay on loading images and previews. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesnt. Maybe the Google apps fallback to their own DNS if it doesn’t resolve?

You’re not using something like PiHole or anything like that? What is your DNS setup?

Yes I use pihole, but it’s the same configuration for wifi and mobile. The configured DoT is my pihole, same as the DoH for Firefox.

All other devices work. I have 3 other androids (one FP5) with the same configuration. It is not blocking YouTube.

Sounds like it indeed would be strange, but my setup also started to have issues when moving to Android 16. No other devices have this in my network. You can maybe give it a try and switch to your Internet provider’s DNS? Just to get a little wiser about this issue. I also cannot pinpoint the exact cause. All I know it’s reproducible with some apps when on DoT. But I’m not 100% convinced it’s DoT yet. It does seem likely, but the behaviour is inconsistent enough to doubt it.

It is not my resolver. It looks however like a phone-local DNS issue anyway.

When I disable DoT, so use my router as DNS, it works for a few seconds to minutes. Then, e.g. fedilab couldn’t load any images but they immediately loaded after re-enabling DoT again.

So it’s not that DoT doesn’t work, it’s something with the DNS cache or evaluation in A16.

That’s exactly it. My detailed post got buried here in this thread when a mod merged posts, but this what I posted initially in this topic before older posts got merged and moved my top post down in this thread.

But it would be really nice to gather more logs so we can help FP pinpoint the issue. So that means gathering apps that have issues, gather logs and do some troubleshooting on our networks to pinpoint a way to reproduce the issue.

Same issue here. Just to add so devs realize this is a widespread issue and needs to be one of their top priorities:

Apps that load data just fine on my FP6 over 5G do not load over wifi. Switching off wifi and on to cellular resolves the issue, the app loads data again. Then you can switch back to wifi again, things work again for a while. It sounds like what was written here in this thread already is the issue, something regarding DNS caching.

I also tried playing with the private vs automatic setting in private DNS but for me it doesn’t change anything. In both modes it will eventually stop working after a few hours, then I need to switch to cellular, and then it works again for a few hours.

Automatic would use DoT if available by your provider. Setting one yourself would also use it. Off is the only setting to disable it on your phone. But your router can still force you to use it.

Can you list these apps?

Only way to do that is to contactsupport
