I also have problems with multiple apps, e.g. 9gag not loading new content, Mediamarkt not getting past the splash screen, and Microsoft Authenticator gets sign in challenges, but fails to submit the responses.
(Force) closing the apps and clearing the cache does not help, but 9gag worked for a short time after a device restart.
Does clearing the data instead of just cache help? WARNING: This will reset the app as if it was re-installed, so be careful, especially with Microsoft Authenticator, since it might reset your 2FA codes. Make sure you have a backup 2FA method before doing this. Or just check with 9gag/Mediamarkt, these probably won’t be as bad :))
Yeah, no way I reset Authenticator, that is a pain to reconfigure
I reset the other apps and they still have the same issues, but I found reports of other users with the same problems, so those are most likely general problems of the apps.
I have recongized a strange behaviour every morning: When I turn off flight mode and the phone gets connected to wifi and mobile network everything looks good. When I open Thunderbird, Mastodon or the app of my car (Skoda) I can’t refresh the content. After I have turned off wifi and did the refresh over the mobile network I can turn off wifi again and then the refresh is working.
This wasn’t an issue on Android 15 but now with Android 16 I recognized it today and yesterday.
Update: Ok, I don’t think it’s related to the update but with some down times with the DNS server.
Update 2: it is related to DNS problems but my and provider works at the mine the moment without problems but some URLs can’t be resolved. After switching to mobile network it works but I have always the same DNS provider (in the router and in private DNS on Android)
For example I had issues with an app where audio was played at the beginning of a chapter. The audio didn’t play, but after a while and some chapters, there where several audios played at once.
I could solve the problems I had with some advices I got from ChatGPT. Like deleting the cache of some apps (like Android system webview), turning bluetooth of, turning the volume up and down, and finally restarting the phone.
I did consult the troubleshooting issues with apps support article now, after the problems reoccured. Did not help me. I reinstalled the app, but the problem still remains. Sometimes it works, then it comes back. I am very annoyed… Especially because I just bought the pro Version of the app, before updating to android 16. If I knew this before, I would have stayed with android 15 :-/
Having the same problem, I just tried disabling Wi-Fi and switching to mobile data (5G in this case) and I get the same result as you!
The Wi-Fi issue theory seems promising.
I selected not having any issues but very often connections time out and images don’t load. Could it be anything DNS related? When the Speedtest loads, its pretty fast but getting there, it’s the hard task.
Once, clearing all caches helped, another time a reboot but that’s very inconvenience and not always the solution.
Yes, my router uses DNS-over-TLS. However, I did set DoT also in the Fairphone’s settings.
I use my own provider but it’s relayed to the Swiss digitale-gesellschaft.ch.
All other devices on my network still work.
Since the latest update I have sometimes issues with my DNS. I use a private DNS mode with dns.quad9.net for years and had no issues. However, I now sometimes experience issues with apps not able to refresh their data or not open at all.
Expected behavior
To have DoT working all the time.
Steps to reproduce
Go to Settings → Network and Internet → Private DNS → Private DNS provider hostname → Fill in: dns.quad9.net
It may take a day for the issues to occur and you need to stay on the same network for a while. This is because DNS caches queries and when you switch networks it seems to refresh those. It may be possible that it’s somehow due to how Android 16 handles DoT. Because I had a Pixel 10 Pro for a few days with Android 16 and I had the same issues on that device.

I have some logs.

Is there a workaround?
Disable private DNS, but that’s not really great. Or use “automatic”, but then you’re dependend on DHCP to get a secure DoT server (but that too causes issues sometimes).
