DNS over TLS/IPv6 issues- Apps don't load data over Wifi

DNS cache can take hours to expire. If you’re connected for some time and don’t switch between networks, then maybe it is really resolved. But I’m quite skeptical, for me the issue is reproducible with DoT, IPv6 has no influence on it for me. But maybe we’re seeing different issues, that’s also possible.

Unfortunately, the fix (clearing the Android System WebView cache) only lasts for a few hours. After the phone stays idle or goes into deep sleep overnight, both the 30-second loading lag and the total 2FA notification lockout return.

It seems like a recurring state corruption in the Android 16 firmware on the FP6. Clearing the cache is just a temporary “band-aid”, not a permanent solution. The system seems to “forget” the registered notification channels again after some time.

I’ve reported this as a persistent bug to Fairphone support.

I havent seen this issue with any A16 beta version and dont remember reports in thr brta channel, so I doubt its a firmware issue…which Webview version habe you installed can you try to update or rollback?

Thanks for the hint, but unfortunately, that didn’t do the trick. I checked my WebView version (145.0.7632.159) and even did a full rollback to the factory version by uninstalling all updates.

The result: That annoying 30-second spinner is still there every time I open the app.

I’ve also gone ahead and completely reinstalled the Scalable Capital app itself, but it didn’t change a thing. The 2FA push notifications are still not coming through, and the startup lag remains exactly the same.

At this point, it feels like this goes way deeper than a simple app or WebView glitch. Since none of the usual “quick fixes” are sticking, it strongly points towards a system-level timeout in this stable Android 16 build for the FP6—likely something buried in the Keystore or Biometric APIs. It’s a real showstopper since it’s effectively locking me out of my banking web-app.

So you did try with mobile data instead Wifi, or?

Huge thanks for that hint! You hit the nail on the head.

I just tested it and the difference is night and day: With Wi-Fi turned off and using mobile data only, the Scalable banking app opens instantly (no 30s lag) and the 2FA push notification arrives within a second.

It really looks like this stable A16 build for the FP6 has a serious bug in its Wi-Fi stack—either with DNS handling or keeping background socket connections alive for push services (FCM).

I’m having trouble getting IPv6 to work on my FP6 when connected to Wi-Fi.

When I switch to mobile data, IPv6 works without any issues. Also, my old FP3 gets IPv6 just fine on the same Wi-Fi network, so the network itself doesn’t seem to be the problem.

On the FP6, however, I don’t get any IPv6 connectivity over Wi-Fi.

Am I missing something? Is there a setting where IPv6 needs to be enabled?

I first noticed this issue last week while running Android 15, and it’s still happening after updating to Android 16 last night.

Same here when using Thunderbird Mail, DHL app and some others. Most annoying though when using Thunderbird, as the 30s delay happens on every mail sync operation.

Which accounts do you sync with Thunderbird?

One office365 account and a private one at Hetzner (your-server . de).

I can’t sync my Exchange account for work, which is also Microsoft. Unless I use mobile data. I use the Gmail app for that, but that doesn’t really matter.

It doesn’t seem to be related to the email provider or email at all, but has to be an issue with the underlying network connection. In Stellarium (astronomy app), for example, object related data loads extremely slow and shows the 30 second delay, too. The same applies to many more apps, each with different remote servers they are connecting to.

When using a mobile network connection there are no issues at all. So, as @Stefan_Geissler already pointed out, this has to do something with wifi, DNS, etc.

Yes, I already pointed out DNS (DoT) in a detailed post in this thread. I totally agree with you. I’m not saying it’s just MS Exchange, it’s indeed something with that particular connection. Which is reproducible, with the same apps or sources being pulled. I see resolv issues with TLS errors. Maybe more people should check their system logs so we can maybe find a common pattern.

So do we gat any resolution soon? This makes my daily experience terrible.

Please report it by contactsupport and sharing logs here will also help pinpoint the exact cause.

Hello,

My new Fairphone 6 is very slow after the Update to a16 (which I did 4 days ago). Multimedia apps like bereal or Spotify are not loading properly its very annoying. What can I do? I shut it off already and also tried to shut the WiFi off. Before the update it was working perfectly fine.

Does anyone know what to do?

Hello and welcome to the community
Is it comparably slow with WIFI off (on mobile data only)?

Apologies for the data trasnfer lost in the testing process

An in-place upgrade to a new major OS version didn’t work out well … can happen.

A backup of everything important from the phone to a safe place should have been done before this upgrade as before any update (if not regularly anyway as recommended), so should be available.

For a quick check whether user stuff might be the culprit … factory reset (this will wipe user data).

If a factory reset isn’t enough to fix the issue(s) … OS install from scratch (this should wipe user data as well), because an Android factory reset doesn’t touch the installed OS and thus will not fix possible issues of the OS installation, and because the install from scratch including data wipe is the only clean way to upgrade a major OS version with any OS on any computer device, as well as the only clearly defined state a device vendor can really test an upgrade with before releasing it (everything else is just crossing fingers and hoping for the best, no vendor can test all states an OS installation might be in out in the wild) … https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/18896094650513-How-to-manually-install-Android-on-your-Fairphone

Then restore backed up data.

Contacting support to let them know would be on the to-do list, too, but we’ll assume @Fairphone_CM as the topic starter is keeping track here.

Some apps take very long to boot after the update.

For a quick check dic:safemode would be the very first step… I’m still wondering @Hannah_D if you are also hit with some apps, by the fact, that wifi is causing this, you can test by disabling wifi shortly to load the app using mobile data.
