Device not booting after flashing factory image and locking bootloader

Not involved?
Can’t be. Even if a service provider takes over the support for them, then hopefully they are involved.
That would be in the spirit of Fairphone. It’s also about their reputation

First you will note I refer to Fairphone not being involved in the repair and cost, only in arranging for Cordon to check, cost and do a repair. Fairphone go along with Cordon unless maybe a customer queries the result

Secondly, rather than taking something over from Fairphone, I’m pretty sure Fairphone probably never did repairs themselves, so they haven’t much of an involvement with the actual repairs.

I imagine Fairphone only do user help via email etc. and decide if it has to be physically inspected and repaired, and then if they will pay Cordon due to a valid warranty exemption.

As for reputation Hmm!

That’s most likely the way it is. The first response is from Fairphone itself, the second one from the repair center, Cordon, commissioned by Fairphone to handle RMA.

I hope it’s not just wishful thinking, but maybe the technician that did the diagnosis was just … having a bad day?

I’ve written both companies and requested further information, but unless I get a response from either I don’t think we can make any progress here.

Hello everyone
I followed this an the other thread about this topic. I received my phone last week and did the same: locked my self out. Genius! This Monday I decided to show up by my reseller and give it them to get a quote to repair. Today I had a replacement in my mailbox, no cost for me. I know, this does not solve the problem but I think it shows that the repaircenter have much space to choose. But to be honest, the guy in the shoped marked my device as DOA. May also this was an point to replace and not to repair for the repaircenter. Hopefully we get the tools soon to solve the problem by our self.
Have a nice evening

Yes a practical reseller  Did you say you tried flashing etc?

He asked me if i tryed to flash e/os and I said yes. But I locked myself out after flashing StockROM. He told me, that it should be not a big deal, specially because Fairphone invite users to flash e/os. I was surprised aswell, thought they gonna charge me about 50 to 100 bugs.

Hi everyone,
Just to give a quick overview of my situation since i contact the fairphone support team : no news… The support team does not respond since i ask for sending my phone to the repair center !

I am very sorry for all people stuck in the same bootloader situation and hope for a solution will be soon delivered by Fairphone !

Once you get a support assistant assigned they usually answer quite fast, the initial response can take quite some time though

Unfortunately this is not the case… Someone answer 3 weeks ago to propose to send back the device, i accept the proposition but since i sent this message i have no news… It is quite annoying ! But not other option that to wait

I would pick up the phone and call them. Just have your ticket number ready

Heyheyhey, huge update incoming.

I just received the new quotation totaling 29,90€, I’m partying right now

I was about to pay when something broke because I had Javascript disabled, so I’ll have to try again later, but it looks like I’ll get my phone back soon

Thanks for your help, support and kind words, it has been an interesting ride

Fairphone support has been great, one of the best experiences I have had so far with customer support, repair center was meh though

That’s nice to hear and hope that this can be solved for all others as well.

That the problem occurs with so many is of course still unpleasant.

Congratulations and long live the repaired FP4! As for me, I’ve been waiting for two weeks for the support to contact me again, but this news gives me hope.

You can try giving them a call, that usually speeds things up a bit

Fairphone support has just contacted me and proposes to send the FP4 back for an out-of-warranty repair, at a price of about 15€, except for more important damages.

They said :

Due to the popularity of our new Fairphone 4 and our Android 10 release for the Fairphone 2, we are experiencing a significant increase in the number of support requests.

:crossed_fingers:

That’s half of what they have charged me, interesting. I’d like to know what the difference is here :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
Good to hear nevertheless

If you send it in to the repair center I’d be interested to hear what they actually charge you, good luck

The phone arrived on Wednesday, I had a quick peek and verified it turned on, but I didn’t have time to take a deeper look.

Upon further inspection it turns out that the device still only boots from slot b, not from slot a. I did nothing but unlock the bootloader. The FP4 is my first A/B partition device, so I don’t have any experience here and the information available online is conflicting with some people claiming that this is supposed to be this way while others claim the opposite…
I also had a look into the android documentation but that isn’t to specific either…

Can someone with more experience and/or an unlocked FP4 check if they can boot from one/two slots?

Thanks

I’ve never been able to boot from more than one slot and I have tried it countless times.

For the longest time I thought that had something to do with Rollback Protection, but according to the Recommended Bootflow

…the rollback index shouldn’t even matter for unlocked devices.
And I just checked, anti rollback protection isn’t enabled on the two unlocked FP4s I have access to.

So, I can’t tell you why it doesn’t work, only that it’s apparently got nothing to do with rollback protection and it doesn’t work for me either :man_shrugging:

Hi everyone,
Just to give you some news about my phone. I received a week ago the mail to send back my phone to Cordon SAV. They received it on friday, and today i received the estimate for the repair of the smartphone: 579€ … The price of the phone. And they said that the warranty is not valid.

So i contact again the Fairphone support to understand what is the problem! To be continued in the next episode
