WhatsApp Unofficial Warning

Hello,

I have a problem with my fair phone 6 e os I have just installed a few apps and I open WhatsApp to log in and it says it an unofficial app even tho I installed it from the website APK can someone help with this? I did reboot from default the phone and just installed Whatsapp but it didn’t work

Welcome to the forum.

rather than from the GP store. I would think that’s the reason.
Installing from a APK means there’s no store associated, so there will (or may) be no automatic updates.

If you wish to install apps from the GPS without using a personal Google account, there’s App Lounge (recent reports of some difficulties) and Aurora.

P.S. - Since this subject is essentially linked to your use of /e/OS you might want to ask for advice over on https://community.e.foundation/

I did install it to from the GP store same response, even the WhatsApp Businesses

I’m not seeing any problem when using WA installed from GP store on stock Fairphone Android.

See this topic on Murena forum:

Maybe the problem is inside Advanced Privacy. WA is not a privacy focused app, so I guess it doesn’t accept that you hide your IP or, worster, block its trackers.

Are you sure you didn’t missunderstand the warning? If you installed it from the playstore, how can it not the official app? The only reason could be that there is malware on your device, but why would a maliciously modified WhatsApp app, inform the user about not being official. That would defeat the purpose secretly infecting you.

I use WhatsApp on /e/OS (via Aurora) and the only warning I get is, that I use a custom ROM which is not officially supported by WhatsApp. This can be ignored safely. (Doing it for over 10 years)

Is this linked to /e/os not passing strong integrity on fp6?

As Switch said, is it possible to ignore this warning?

You can see on the 2 pictures it’s indeed the real one from the store and the wearing cant be bypassed (at least not in theory)

Official app and not a way to bypass

I can’t see a way to bypass it

Ahhhhh thanks for the screenshot! Here is a translation for others:

You need the official WhatsApp application to log in

The application you are using poses risks to privacy and security, and you can no longer use it to access your WhatsApp chats.

How to get the official WhatsApp application
Download it from the app store or directly from WhatsApp. Go to the official website

Privacy and security on WhatsApp
In the official WhatsApp application, you can control your privacy, send messages securely, and add another number if you have more than one account.

I looked online and found this reddit-thread, it has a lot of usefull information, maybe there’s a solution for you.

Never came across this before but it’s rather arresting. Looks like a combination of OS version and Whatsapp account issue

Maybe it makes use of the same thing as discussed in this Dutch article? The Integrity-API?

i thought so to, but the reddit thread seems to be implying that it’s independant of integrity status

This has likely to do with changes in the Google Play Integrity api that were implemented in december 2024. These changes made it possible that apps can check if the phone is not rooted or is not running a custom ROM. A check to make sure that apps were installed through the Play Store was also introduced.

Like I mentioned, my whatsapp warns me about having a custom ROM (it always did & it’s a different messsage) but lets me use whatsapp anyways. I am on rooted /e/OS. Also in the reddit thread it was confirmed it doesn’t matter if it’s installed from the playstore or not.

Did you already try to disable all advanced privacy methods as mentioned here?
