WhatsApp Camera issue with FP 5

Hi everyone,

I’ve been experiencing an issue when taking photos or videos directly within the WhatsApp app to send to a contact or group chat. After capturing the photo or video, the app sometimes crashes. This results in either a blurred photo or a video of only a few seconds being saved.

I’ve already ensured WhatsApp is updated and tried clearing the app cache, but the problem persists. It seems like this might be related to Fairphone. Has anyone else encountered this issue or heard of a solution in progress?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have never faced this issue nor can I remember reports here in the forum, so I dont really think so.

Do you have a SD card inserted and how is this formatted?

No SD card on my FP 5

Anyway, I have never experienced this issue on any other phone and as I mentioned the WhatsApp app is updated and cache cleaned so I’d appreciate it if, when replying, the focus could be on providing just helpful input rather than defending Fairphone at all costs

Yes, I have been having the same issue with FP5. Did you get it solved. In my case, when I open whatsapp and try to take a picture, it doesnt take it at all, and I have to get out of camera and back in and see if it works…it is very annoying.

Hi, I did not solved the problem yet but I have been in contact with FP support. They suggested to uninstall and re-install whatsApp, but the issue is still happening to me (not always, but often). I’ll let you know if they have any other update on that. In the meantime, I’ll suggest you to have a way to clean your cache easily (like a phone cleaner app), that helped me whenever I have this issue, and to report the problem to FP support so with more customers reporting the problem they can hopefully solve it. But honestly a phone with these specs should not have these kind of problems

Maybe it’s not a problem with the phone at all, but with the app(s)? I would not install a ‘phone cleaner app’, for example, as they promise more than they can actually do. It’s more like snake oil, than a real help and they can cause problems by themself, and probably advertise another app to solve these. Less is more sometimes.

I believe that if this issue were specific to WhatsApp (as it’s the only app where I’ve encountered the problem), it would have likely been resolved by now, and/or I would have found a solution online—which hasn’t been the case. This issue has persisted for three months since I got the FP5. I’ve never experienced a similar problem with other phones, nor have I heard of others facing this issue with different devices. It’s quite frustrating because sometimes, when you try to send a photo or video directly through a WhatsApp chat, the phone lags, causing you to lose the media content. Anyway, I will let you know what the support will tell me and hopefully it is something that can be solved with minor updates.

Same problem here: Everything not the FP Camera app needs a second invitation to take a photo. Not always, but about half the time.

If you want more reasons not to recommend the FP5 to anyone try using another camera app, where you can change the ISO. Complete system crash and consecutive reboot.

Both Bugs persist since december 23, and tempt mento just get another throw-away every time i miss a shot.

I have the same problem with the original FP Kamera app on FPOS. Around 50% of the taken pictures are not saved. I must check every single picture if it appears in the gallery and regularly must take 2 or 3 trials to get a saved picture.

Really annoying. This happens around 2 month. It does not matter if I save a picture on internal memory or SD Card.

I’m a bit exhausted and fed up with Fairphone’s performance, it’s truly nerve-wrecking.
This issue, which has been around since Android 14 (and is still here after updating to 15), is frustrating.

Basically every time I try to send a video via WhatsApp (recording directly in the app, without using the camera first), the recording doesn’t stop when I release the button. The video freezes, and I end up with an unusable 2-second clip, no matter if I recorded for 20 seconds or more.

The exact same thing happens with photos taken directly in WhatsApp – they result in a completely unusable image.

I’ve already posted here about it in the past and contacted support. I didn’t get anything remotely useful back – just the usual “uninstall WhatsApp, back up your data, reinstall” suggestions, which are clearly pointless and only distract from the fact that the software has serious bugs that aren’t being fixed.

I’m also linking a video to demonstrate the issue (filmed using a friend’s iPhone so I didn’t have to record my own screen).

How many of you are facing the same problem? How do you even deal with it? Have you found any real solutions (other than uninstalling/reinstalling the app, which absolutely doesn’t help)?

I doubt that this is because of the FP software only… seems are rare issue at least you are the first to report this, as far as I know, so there must be personal set-up/settings, playing a role. I merge your topics.

Seems to me that other people have the same issue, as they’ve commented on my previous post sharing their experiences. What personal settings could be? I have already followed the protocol proposed by the FP support and nothing changed.

Still the amount of those commenting here in relation with WA is very low, so finding a root cause is rather difficult.

There are a few more in general facing the problem that pictures are not saved, still to me its a minority making it difficult to find the reason.

I e.g. dont have any of those issues.

So for me the way to go would be: save all data, make a factory reset and set-up from scratch, not from any back-up that might include any old settings from any previous phone(s).

Yes that takes a bit time, however I really doubt that this is a OS issues as long as there are so few people experiencing this.

Additionally, I would suggest that when you do a completely fresh setup of your phone, don’t put all your apps back before testing. ‘Just’ a factory reset and then Whatsapp. That would rule out other apps or security programs from interfering with Whatsapp.
