I’ve adopted my father’s fairphone 6 with eOS and I am having trouble with using whatsapp and signal when using mobile data (Vodafone Italia) essentially messages and calls never seem to connect. My hotspot also doesn’t work… That’s my latest discovery.
I have troubleshot all the AI tools and browsed the fairphone and EOS forums and as far as I am aware the issue appears to be that my microG does not connect to cloud messaging. I have double checked background permissions, checked the privacy controls, reset the mobile network, turned airplane mode on and off, but it just refused to turn on. I’m not sure what else I can do.
I cannot help with your query, Sorry, but you have succeeded in both intriguing and alarming me (obviously unintentional). My FP3 is currently non-functional with a dark screen, whether or not it can be fixed is unknown, and of course FP3 support has ended. Hence, I have (reluctantly) decided to get a new phone, presumably an FP6+, and am dithering between Android or /e/OS. One concern I have with /e/OS is two critical-to-me apps are not avail;able except via Google’s playstore, signal, and also my bank’s app (needed for on-line payment confirmation and just generally useful).
Hence, I am intrigued you were able to install signal on /e/OS, how did you do that? I have used APK side-installs (or whatever it’s calls), but am unaware of an APK for either of those two apps (and suspect my bank will be confused if I ask about their app). Hence, I somewhat feel I’m being forced either to use Android, or to use playstore on /e/OS (if that is even possible, this is Google and they can get rather weird)).
I’m obviously not familiar with /e/OS other than its kernel (at least) is derived from Android’s kernel. So please accept my apologies for any confusions or for overlooking the “obvious”.
Yes… well I have other issues with /e/OS, mostly an inability to use the appstore which I have not resolved. I had installed both signal and whatsapp (as well as my banking apps) using the appstore before it stopped working on me. Others recommend Aurora store but I am not tech savy enough to sideload that atm.
But the issue with Signal and Whatsapp has been resolved, I had to select an ‘access point name’ manually and I have not had a problem since. It also was not an issue with another sim card I got whilst travelling, so it may be provider specific.
No need to “sideload” Aurora. And I think you don’t need a lot of experience to install it:
1.) Download F-Droid from https://f-droid.org (it’s good to have it anyway for using great open source apps in the future)
2.) temporarily give you browser permission to install 3rd party apps (a notification for enabling it should pop up automatically when you open the downloaded app in the browser notification)
3.) after F-Droid installation disable browser 3rd party installation permission again for security reasons
4.) start F-Droid
5.) search for Aurora in F-Droid and install it (again you’ll be asked to allow 3rd party installation for F-Droid; allow this)
6.) Start Aurora
