What is the "Other" storage and why is it eating up all my free storage?

What is the “Other” storage and why is it eating up all my storage? :expressionless:

Do you have any streaming apps? Netflix maybe? It might copy some videos onto your phone.
It won’t be listed as “Videos”.

Nope. I really don’t have a lot of apps at all, especially not any ‘fun’ apps like streaming clients or games. Pretty much all of them are from F-Droid, like Conversations, IronFox and Tusky.

On my FP5 i can click/tap the Other and see what’s included

That only opens the file manager, which shows me the “largest files”. Some of the largest ones are some video at 200 MB.

Hi Hund, could large hidden files be causing it? On my Fairphone 5 there is an option on the Files app’s Settings (in the Browse section) to Show hidden files (first screenshot attached).

Like @Meaghan mentioned, on the Storage settings section, clicking on Others should show you all files tacking up space there. In my case, I selected the All tab and Sort by (on the 3 dot menu on the top right) Largest first (second screenshot attached).

Do you have these options? If so, do you see new larger files?

If not, besides the video of around 200 MB, how large are the largest files you see in the Others folder?

I found the issue. It was Syncthing who was hoarding backups like crazy. :man_facepalming:

Thank you all for the help and replies!

Glad to hear you found the culprit! Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing which file navigation app you are using in your screenshot?

By the way, did you also see these backups in the Google Files app? Just so it’s easier to help somone in the future with a similar issue. Thanks!

I’m using the Fossify File Manager.

I did not see them in ghe Google File Manager (either). That’s why I missed them at first. I ended up browsing around and looking for hidden files that I could have missed.

I’m well aware of hidden files as a long time user of Linux based operating systems. They’re just not as common on Android, so I didnd’t think about that at first.
