Hey Everyone, I’m a resident of India. I’m posting on behalf of my friend who recently bought a Fairphone 5 from Europe, and had it brought into India.
We’re facing issues setting up apps like GooglePay, PhonePe etc. which use the UPI (unified payments interface) to send / receive money from other bank accounts within India. Here’s what we have tried:
- Installed GooglePay through the app store
- Tried to initiate set up for connecting with UPI (following this tutorial, which is straightforward and works with all android phones)
- The SMS that is supposed to authenticate the number does not get delivered (have tried this multiple times)
Seems like other SMSes (from contacts, other businesses) are getting delivered, but these SMSes that involve UPI are not visible / not getting delivered. There are some device compatibility checks done by Google and other companies before allowing UPI on a particular phone, but I’m not sure if Fairphone is blocking them in some way or another.
Any help here would be appreciated! UPI apps are an absolute necessity in India and we’d love to figure out how to use the Fairphone with it.
