The Fairbuds XL were already good. We made them better

It’s time to turn up the volume. We have a new edition of our award-winning Fairbuds XL now on sale. Launched in 2023, our first over-ear wireless Bluetooth headphones turned heads everywhere, thanks to their unique repairable and modular design, long-lasting battery life, and natural sound. The Fairbuds XL were a critic’s darling as well, picking up the prestigious IF Design award in 2024 for their sleek aesthetic that perfectly combined sustainability with style.

Cut to two years later, and we’ve made them even better. Here’s how.

  • New speaker drivers for even better sound

Headphone drivers are the part that’s responsible for converting electric signals to sound waves. They are crucial to your headphone’s performance; they decide what your audio is going to sound like. We’ve popped brand-new 40mm dynamic drivers inside the upgraded Fairbuds XL, physically designed to provide more power and more thump to your sound. They are strong yet lightweight, adding to the Fairbuds XL’s wearability and comfort factor. The drivers have been specially tuned to provide even more accuracy in mid and high frequencies.

The sound’s more natural, more balanced, and more detailed, providing 24-bit sound wirelessly thanks to aptX HD codec compatibility. To sum it up, they simply sound better. Hear the difference for yourself.

  • New material design for all-day comfort

The new Fairbuds XL come in the same colors as the Fairphone (Gen. 6)—Forest Green and Horizon Black—and sport the new Fairphone logo. The design changes go beyond just cosmetic, though. We gave the Fairbuds XL a material makeover, swapping out the vegan leather ear cushions with robust and durable net fabric in the headband and plush bird’s eye fabric in the ear cushions. Softer, more breathable, and comfier all around, the updated design makes the Fairbuds XL perfect for all-day wear with zero fatigue on the ears. And just like before, they are still dust and moisture resistant with an IP54 rating, making them perfect for your on-the-go lifestyle.

  • Better battery life with one smart feature

The original Fairbuds XL were always lauded for their extra-long runtime. A single charge could last between 26 and 30 hours, depending on how much you use noise-cancelling. Long-haul flights were an absolute breeze, sound-wise. With the upgraded drivers, we have also introduced an Auto Power Off feature, switching your headphones off after 30 minutes of inactivity. It’s a small but truly smart tweak that makes a world of difference to battery life. Needless to say, the battery is still swappable, meaning when the time comes, you can simply pop in a new battery and keep your Fairbuds XL going even longer.

  • The world’s first LONGTIME®-certified consumer audio product

The upgraded Fairbuds XL holds the distinction of being the world’s first consumer audio product that has been certified by the LONGTIME® label. They have earned this because of a combination of factors, ranging from their industry-leading repairability, their durable design and their overall longevity. The Fairbuds XL still sport the original’s modularity, with nine swappable spare parts that you can pop in and out in minutes with just a screwdriver. They also come with an additional year of warranty compared to the original edition, going from two to three years in total.

  • Made fair. Made better.

The new Fairbuds XL are made with more than 50% fair and recycled materials by total weight, including 100% recycled rare earth elements in the speaker magnets, more than 90% recycled aluminum, and more than 80% recycled plastics. The copper, cobalt, silver, and gold used in the Fairbuds XL are accounted for through mineral credits, ensuring that the same amount of these materials is produced under more responsible conditions. They are also assembled using 100% renewable energy. Meanwhile, our sustainable over-ear headphones continue to be 100% e-waste neutral, ensuring that for every pair sold, an equivalent weight of electronic waste is responsibly collected and recycled. Also, the factory where the Fairbuds XL’s final assembly happens participates in Fairphone’s living wage bonus program, designed to close the gap between minimum wage and an actual livable wage.

The Fairbuds XL still retains a lot of the premium features that ranked them alongside the world’s best headphones. Seamlessly switch between devices with dual multipoint connectivity. Toggle active noise canceling to truly immerse yourself in your sound. Go even more granular with your sound with the updated Fairbuds app that lets you play around with a multi-band equalizer.

Oh, and one more thing.

Spare parts for the new Fairbuds XL? They are backwards compatible with the original edition. So, in case you happen to have a pair lying around and want to upgrade your listening experience, keep what you have and only upgrade the speaker drivers. Or you might want to stick to the original’s PU leather ear cushions. It’s up to you. Because that’s true modularity. That’s the Fairphone way.

The Fairbuds XL. Premium Sound. Built to last. Hear the difference here.

It’s nice! But ANC still generates wind noise :frowning: Would’ve been cooler if that was improved for both the old and new model.

If now upgrades could come to Fairphone 6 too… that would be a deal breaker :grin:

Interesting find in the support article on replacing Fairbuds XL parts:

Headband Base replacement

-IMPORTANT-
Before you begin, make sure you have a Phillips #0 screwdriver (for Fairbuds XL 2025) or a Phillips #00 screwdriver (for Fairbuds XL 2023).

I worked on a 2023 XL this afternoon, originally using the #0 and quickly figuring out (by trying) #00 worked better. I later worked on the 2025 XL and kept using the latter and it somehow worked out, too. Will still try the #0 on 2025 next time.

No mention of improving the headband base and the picture seems to indicate that the same design is used. Which is odd, because that is one of the bigger, if not the biggest, flaws in the design. The radius on the inside of the top part of the connector is too small causing stress fractures. I had hoped to see an improved headband. But alas, that is not going to happen, it seems. I guess I’ll just sell the 2023 version and move on…

This was already improved in the 2023 version, the 2025 version has the same improvement.

The headband still breaks about three times a year for me, so whatever that “improvement” was, it was ineffective.

I believe they released the improvement about a year ago. So that’s disappointing. But I suppose you got these repaired for free, right? Due to warranty. My XL is still going strong. I just have the same quality issues like anyone else, like wind noise, left earbud that sometimes has connection issues, auto pairing after Bluetooth disconnect and things like that. Hopefully mine will never snap.

I still live in hope that Fairphone will release a boom microphone add on for office / gaming use. For me it’s a no brainer, I would assume I’m not only one who would like a repairable headset for the office.

Nice update of the fairbuds xl.

Does the 30 minute turn of also comes to the 2023 version?

I presume it is a software feature.

I think it is theoretically possible but not yet implemented.

I’ve been using my 2023 Fairbuds a lot daily. One headband base broke last spring just after their second “birthday” and the other now, after two and a half years of heavy use. That’s pretty good in my opinion. This obviously doesn’t preclude that you have a faulty pair.

Also, with any other manufacturer, I would have had to buy a new pair of headphones. As a Fairphone customer, I can order a new headband base for 20 euros (ok, 30 with postage).

I can’t believe that they’ve made headphones which are modular, made pretty much entirely out of recycled materials, e-waste neutral and Longtime certified for 250 euros. And now the new ones are backwards compatible. Any one of these features would have been pretty revolutionary on their own. Put them all together and these headphones are unique.

I’m not a hi-fi enthusiast but I am a former music student and I think the sound quality and noise cancelling are perfectly fine. Especially considering the price, the modularity etc…

Of course you need to keep pointing out the flaws in the company, otherwise they won’t develop. I just feel that there’s often a lot of negativity on this forum and I want to say that for me what Fairphone is doing is so flipping cool it makes my mind boggle.

I have an issue with the Fairbuds both XL and small, namely when I watch a movie while listening with the buds the sync is lost and the sound is delayed with respect to the video. Is there some setting that I’ve overlooked? I have a FP5 and Fairbuds XL and small bought early this year.

Resharing for more people to see the compatibility embedded

Yes all very pretty but you can’t watch a video with them, the sound is so out of sync, delayed. There seems to be no solution although people have been complaining about this for over 18 months apparently

And today it happened again:

The problem with the headband base definitely hasn’t been solved. Since the same flawed design is used in the 2025 version, I wonder how people in the US market will respond once they find out how well made these headbands are made. I suspect fairphone won’t fare well.

Oh wow, I somehow have the feeling that this could happen quite often in my case, since my headphones have to withstand a lot. After all, it’s made from 100% recycled plastic, so at least in terms of emissions caused by Fairphone products it shouldn’t make a huge difference.

Still, I don’t understand why they didn’t fix or improve this.

Can you tell me some more details about the delay, please? How much ms is the delay? And is there a delay when using wired?

I have just tested it on the youtube video from the Acdc concert and I didn’t notice any delay of the music. I tested it through bluetooth.
