It looks like the FP6 card tray has both the SIM and the SD. Therefore, if I take the SD out, the SIM comes out too?
I would like to be able to take the SD out without having to take the SIM out. And no, I do not want to use an e-SIM.
You dont need to take the SIM out when you take out the SD card, just let it in the tray and put the tray back in
OK, so you in fact confirm that the SIM card does come out of the phone, it is in the same tray.
Sticking the tray with the SIM back in means I have to unlock the SIM again. That’s not convenient. The SD and the SIM should be independent.
Using a USB stick is also not good: the file updates then go in two steps: computer→USBstick→SD.
There is no need to back up the SD card, as it is in fact a partial backup of my computer’s documents, so I am not afraid of the SD failing. I just need to keep the documents on the SD to reflect most of what I have on the computer.
Also, as reported earlier, most file transfer apps do not allow one to select file types / folders that should not be copied.
Conclusion: FTP via WiFi (or perhaps cable), using my custom-made app will still be quickest. It only copies files that have been modified since last sync, and can be set to ignore file types I don’t want to carry around on my phone anyway (.stl, .c4d, .app, …) and folders I don’t want to copy to the SD (e.g. music).
But I had to write the app. I would have preferred to use an existing app such as FoldersSynchroniser, but that needs to see the SD card as an external disc.
I’m pretty sure all phones (that have removable SD cards) share a tray with the SIM. Also, the trays are quite fragile and not really designed for a lot of eject/load cycles. So, yes, I think you’re better off looking at a wireless solution. Personally, I use Syncthing.

The Fairphone 6 is the first Fairphone which has a shared tray for SIM and SD card.
The previous Fairphones had separate trays for SIM and SD card.
Fairphone 1, 2 and 3 have 2 trays for SIM and a 3th tray for the SD card.
JohnVeness: thanks. I looked at syncthing but it does not seem to allow me to state a list of file types to exclude, only entire folders. I have 452’000 files in the folder to synch, but don’t want all of them. Synching should only be for the desired ones and if they have changed, and also only go one way. So my own app will do the job. Sigh.
Lidwien: this is interesting. I have a Fairphone 4, and there is no tray at all: I have to power it down, remove the battery, then get to the SD card. This is ridiculous.
Of course I can also carry around a small USB device with the data, but that is a nuisance since it can be forgotten, left behind, and so on.
The best thing would be a simple separate SD card slot, not even a tray needed. I wonder why that was not implemented.

Ah, I didn’t realise that. To be honest, I was going from my experience with other brands, which all have used a shared tray for years. Cool that FP used to have separate trays.
You might want to look closer at Syncthing. You can set up “include” patterns to transfer just certain file types (and folders), and you can setup one-way syncs if that’s what you want. For further help, probably best asking on the Syncthing forum though, not here!
Okay, I should have called it a slot instead of a tray.
The big advantage of having to remove your battery to get to the slot is that the phone is off whilst changing SIM or SD card.
It’s easy to forget to switch the phone before removing a SIM or SD card.

As to switching the phone off for removing a USB stick plugged into the USB-C port: that’s not necessary, though one should of course do a proper “eject” from a file manager. So why would it be needed to switch the phone off for removing an SD card? Surely an “eject” would be sufficient.
