Removing Gemini?

Hello,

I’ve got a fairphone 6 with Gemini.

I’ve disabled Gemini in the apps but it still pops up everytime I long press the on button. It is also poping up randomly and disturbs media playing in the background.

In short, can I get the shutdown or power options screen by long pressing the on button?

If so, how.

Thanks for your help

Please check the gestures settings.

Thanks for your help.

I’ve successfully changed the setting for the power button. Much less frustrating.

This is a related question.

I’ve disabled Gemini app, but it still seems to work fine, when I tested it before switching the power gesture.Searches the web, creates images, etc.

Does it have another mechanic that allows it to still operate?

This thing is a bloody hydra.

Could you try uninstalling it?

Unfortunately you can’t, it’s part of Google’s Android OS

That’s what I’ve read

I know Google changes their settings and some Google apps are difficult to get rid of, but I vaguely remember installing Gemini.
There are more threads and more knowledgeable people on the forum on the topic of getting rid of (some) Google apps.
I am afraid I will not be able to help any further but please search the forum for relevant topics.

Ok,

Thanks for your help

Hi,
Rather than trying to uninstall it, as it is a system app, disable it within the settings, apps, Gemini. I did that for a bunch of Google apps like YouTube, YouTube music and so on. Still everything works.
You can alls search for “assist” in the settings and remove the default assistant and all things you find annoying.

This is due to how Gemini is integrated into Android. The Gemini app is there only to access it as a chat bot (the same as on https://gemini.google.com). Gemini (the virtual assistant triggered with holding the power button by default, but also by different gestures and “Ok Google”) is part of the Google app and will be available as long as the Google app is installed.

I think you can disable some (maybe all triggers) in the Google app settings if you don’t want to use it at all.

Thank you very much. I hadn’t made the Google assistant/Gemini connection.
I think I’ve found all it’s settings and turned them off.
Much appreciated

I had the same problem (Fairphone6), disabling it in apps.
But the thing still popped up when I opened the messaging app.
I tried doing this as well as disabling in apps:
Open the messaging app (‘Google Messages’)
Click on the person iconny thing (top right, pale green on my phone)
Go into ‘Messages settings’
Go into ‘Gemini in Messages’ …
… and there’s a setting there, ‘Show Gemini button’
That seems to have killed it.

(If I’d realised how infuriating and time-consuming it was get google’s fingers off my phone I’d have shelled out for the Murena version!)

There is also the digital assistant setting, which you can use to swap from Gemini to anything else (including None)

Thank you.
I’ve tracked it down, following your trail and killed that one.
There is still in somewhere, since I still get random “assistance” coming intermittently.
I will keep trying, but making good progress against the tide.

Yes. I have been told and try to kill that one. Still more to go, since it pops up occasionally even though I’ve said no assistant. I will kill the damn thing eventually.

Slogging through it

Sigh…
The bloody thing is truly a hydra.
So, there is try another way to activate it.
When I was listening to Bluetooth earbuds I touched one to change media, but it activated Gemini (even though I have turned it “off”)

My wife and I where talking about the dog and the AI chimes in with comments about dogs Grrrrrrrrr

If you activate Gemini with Bluetooth devices or associated apps then go to the profile icon and tap “connected apps” there is a list of apps (loads of them) that can bring Gemini back from the dead.
Click all these to off.
Slowly getting there.

as it never happens to me, I was wondering what settings I have..
could you check all settings connected with digital assistant/assistance?

Hi Meaghan,

I think I have found them all. Famous last words.

Settings: In default apps, switch assistant to none.

Open Gemini, go to the profile icon, tap connected apps and turn all off.

I settings: goto apps, Tap all apps and go to Gemini and turn off. I think Google assistant is there too.

Goto gesture and turn the on button to power rather than Gemini.

I think I’m missing steps, but they should be strung out through this thread.

Just for reference, this is the result of assistant search within my settings.

Edited to say that the screenshot didn’t manage to capture it in full;-)
